The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's
Chapter 115: Two Fronts
The Ash War had two fronts.
The relay runner’s warning reverberated in Cinder Hollow’s low-ceilinged council room while water dripped through the old mine pipes. A hundred faces watched around the table: the rescued prisoners, settlement wardens, and Austin Veyron’s expedition team. No one spoke while they all waited for a single person to turn the message into a decision.
Grand Meridian would be attacked before noon tomorrow.
The rescue party was still north of the quarry with dozens of freed prisoners, wounded people, and no safe route that could carry everyone quickly.
Austin Veyron stared at the map spread over the table. Every line on it felt too thin.
"We cannot take the whole group back through the ash," he said. "The forge column will see us. We cannot leave them here without support either."
Nysara faced him across the table, black antlers nearly brushing the pipe above. "Cinder Hollow has a west water route. It leads to old caravan shelters. I can move the freed people there with the wardens and the healer."
Doria nodded. "The injured can make it if we go slowly."
"You do not know what waits on that route," Austin Veyron said.
"No," Nysara replied. "But neither do you."
The blunt truth stopped him.
Veyra leaned against the wall with her arms crossed. "You are trying to solve both fronts with one body again."
"I am trying not to abandon people."
"Then stop treating trust like abandonment."
Sable turned from the map to Austin Veyron. "Grand Meridian is not helpless. Marcus and Elena have been holding the city without us for days. The people we rescued are not helpless either."
Austin Veyron hated how much he needed to hear it.
He opened the relay token. The white connection to Grand Meridian was weak but alive.
Elena answered in a flicker of script.
FORGE COLUMN CONFIRMED. SOUTH RIDGE. CITY ROUTES MOBILIZING.
Austin Veyron wrote back: WE HAVE REFUGEES. CAN STRIKE TEAM RETURN THROUGH OLD NORTH ROAD?
Marcus’s reply came after a tense pause.
YES. FAST TEAM ONLY. SOUTH GATE NEEDS YOU, BUT WE WILL NOT ORDER THE REFUGEES INTO DANGER.
The words made something in Austin Veyron’s chest ease.
He looked at the people around the table.
"Here is the plan," he said. "Nysara leads the refugees and Cinder Hollow wardens west through the water route. Doria goes with them. Lysenne guides. Anyone who stays understands the risks. The strike team returns to Grand Meridian by the north road: Veyra, Rin, Kesra, Sable, Taryn, Maelis, Sarielle, Calder, Eshra, and me."
"And if the column hits before we arrive?" Taryn asked.
"Then the Freehold uses the city routes it built."
No one called it a good plan.
They called it theirs.
The relay died.
Every white mark on the token went dark at once.
Rin was moving before Austin Veyron had fully understood. "Infiltrator."
A red wire had emerged from the council-room wall and wrapped around the relay device. It was thin as hair, almost invisible in the pipe shadows. When Rin cut it, the wire snapped back through a crack in the stone.
The entire hollow shook.
Outside, alarms began to ring.
Austin Veyron ran into the main shelter corridor. Cinder Hollow’s people were gathering near the water stores, confused and frightened. A forge infiltrator had come through the old pipe shaft: a tall demon in a miner’s coat, its face hidden behind a cracked iron lamp. Red wires crawled from its sleeves into the settlement’s support beams.
"Cinder Hollow is claimed," it said. "Remain where you are. The Matron will account for you."
One of the wardens rushed it with a crossbow. The infiltrator flicked a wire around his ankle and slammed him against the wall.
Austin Veyron drew the white root chain.
"Let him go."
The lamp-faced demon turned. "Devourer. We counted on you returning to the city."
"Bad count."
The infiltrator opened both arms. Red wires surged through the corridor, not toward Austin Veyron but toward the settlement’s support beams. It was going to collapse the roof over everyone.
Maelis set a protective ember wall along the ceiling. Sarielle layered silver fire over it, forcing the falling dust back. Kesra climbed onto a water barrel and cut the nearest wire. Taryn saw the pattern and shouted directions.
"Those are not support lines. They are resonance lines. Cut the ones with the spiral knots!"
Eshra grabbed a forge tool from her pack and followed her. Together they severed the first two wires.
The infiltrator yanked the captured warden closer, using him as a shield. The man’s head struck the stone. Blood ran down his temple.
Austin Veyron felt DEVOUR demand the simplest answer.
Eat the infiltrator. Take its wire craft. End the threat.
But the red lines were tied to the ceiling. If he consumed the demon’s core too fast, the commands could fire in every direction at once.
"Calder," he said. "Can you disrupt the center line?"
Calder looked at the marks on the ceiling and went pale. "For a few seconds."
"Few is enough."
Calder pressed his gray scarred wrist to the wall. The contestant remnant flared, then turned toward the red resonance line. Every wire in the corridor went still.
Veyra moved.
She crossed the distance in two steps and struck the infiltrator’s wrist with the flat of her blade. The red wire released the warden. Austin Veyron caught the man before he hit the floor.
Rin’s arrow took the lamp from the demon’s face.
Underneath was an adult woman with ash scars across her cheeks and a forge brand covering one eye. She reached for another wire, but Sable pinned her hand to the wall with the broken crown shard.
"Who are you?" Sable demanded.
The woman breathed hard. "A counter."
"A name," Taryn said.
The woman’s unbranded eye fixed on her. "Orsa."
"We do not need a name to know you tried to bury a settlement," Kesra said.
Orsa laughed weakly. "And you think Vordessa will stop because you cut one line?"
Austin Veyron knelt beside the severed red wire. The command inside it was still alive, scratching toward the ceiling beams. He opened DEVOUR and consumed only the collapse order. The taste of it crawled through his mouth, sharp with panic and stone dust.
The wires went limp.
Orsa stared at him. "You left me alive."
"You can be held while the wardens decide what safety looks like," Austin Veyron said. "You do not get a crown from me."
The Cinder Hollow warden, bleeding but conscious, looked at the infiltrator and then at the settlement residents. "We will question her with witnesses. No private cages."
Austin Veyron nodded.
The relay token flickered back to life.
Elena’s script came through in a rush.
ASH STORM ON NORTH ROAD. FORGE COLUMN VISIBLE. SOUTH RIDGE, TWO HOURS.
Veyra read over his shoulder. "The road home is blocked."
"Then we cut through the storm," Austin Veyron said.
"You cannot cut weather," she replied.
"Maybe not. But the storm is carrying forge ash. It has a command."
Sable’s face tightened. "If you devour it all, it will change you."
Austin Veyron looked at the shelter full of people who had trusted his plan, then at the message from a city already preparing to stand without him.
"I will not take it all," he said.
Nysara stepped forward with the west-route volunteers behind her. "We leave now. You go south. We will reach the caravan shelters and send word when we can."
No farewell speech followed. There was no time.
The strike team gathered at the northern exit, packs already wet with ash. Behind them, the freed prisoners began moving west under Nysara’s lead.
Outside, the sky had become a wall of black-red cloud.
The old north road vanished inside it.
Far south, beyond the storm, smoke rose from the ridge above Grand Meridian.
