The Scowling Sidekick: A My Hero Academia Fanfiction
Preparing For The Provisional Licensing Exam
We got to school on time and teleported to our dorms after leaving our apartment, as our personas, doing the opposite of what we did last night. We change/transform in our dorms and walk to class with Hagakure and Tsu. Hagakure says to Aya-chan, “I have been meaning to ask, but was distracted. When did you guys get tattoos?” Aya-chan says while looking at her weapon-covered arms and moves a kunai knife for them to see and says, “Kai-chan drew me weapons to protect myself with, so I put all over to make fighting easier. Why use a paper that can fly through the wind or get ruined when wet when I have all of this space to use?” She says, gesturing to her body. Tsu says, “I think it is cool how you use your quirk. I am not sure I would have done the same thing in your shoes.”
Aya-chan perks up energetically and says, “If you think that is cool, you should see how I use my phone now.” She flips her left arm around to show the inside of her wrist, where she keeps her main phone, and touches her skin to interact with it while it is 2D. They gasp in awe, and Hagakure says, “That is so amazing! You never have to worry about breaking it or losing it anymore!” She also shows them our friends’ pokéball tattoos and how they are always with us now. Hagakure asks while admiring Aya-chan’s tattoos, “I wonder if you could draw me a face?” Aya-chan laughs, “I never thought of that! I would love to see your face, actually.” Hagakure sighs, “I would, too.” I just had an idea, what if they are going about it the wrong way? What if there is an item that removes invisibility or concealment or something? I am sure my ability could find something that would help.
Aya-chan sees my face and asks, “What is it?” I respond, “I just had an even better idea, but I’ll tell you later.” Tsu asks, “Why not just say it now, ribbit?” I sigh and rub the back of my neck, “I will tell you as well, Tsu, but we can’t talk about it like this.” Hagakure asks, “Should we meet in your dorm after class?” Aya-chan nods, “Yeah, that works.”
We got to class, and the morning was filled with normal classes. After lunch, Mr. Aizawa took us to one of the training grounds. Mr. Aizawa says after a yawn, “Today, we are continuing to work on the ultimate moves that you were working on during the summer break. Everyone except Todoroki, Bakugo, Kubo, and Mochizuki got their provisional licenses over the summer. I want the girls to see your progress so they can see what they need to do to make their own ultimate moves. These will come in handy during your work studies, which I will go into more detail about on a later date.” He goes to the corner and zips up his yellow sleeping bag while we all start training ultimate techniques, while all thinking about what the fuck work studies are.
Our classmates who passed the test in the summer gave us some pointers, like how they evaluate our interactions with civilians and our abilities. They told us how Bakugo initially failed because of his interaction with the actors pretending to be civilians, and how Todoroki failed for fighting someone from another school, putting actors and heroes in harm's way. After they briefed us on what they went through, I decided to test out my new quirks from Kanto. I haven’t used my Dark Pulse or Aerial Ace quirks yet, and I have no idea how they will affect people. I shoot a black ball of empty space at one of the cement pillars that Cementoss made for our quirk walking practice, and it makes a crater, and the black void disappears. I still think it is weird that I am compatible with these dark-type moves since my quirk ultimate is so bright, but Aya-chan has said that light can’t exist without dark, like yin and yang.
Hagakure asks, “Wow, Sekai, what the hell was that?” I explain to them, using the excuse Aya-chan came up with, how my teleportation manipulates space, and this was another way for me to manipulate the space around me by shooting empty space at opponents. Midoriya stopped kicking, and he came rushing and doing that fast inquisitive thing he does, “Sekai, whatwasthataboutemptyspace? Howexactlydoyoucontrolthespace? Ithoughtthatyoucouldonlytelepor-” The spiky bastard yells at the nerd while not stopping developing his own ultimates, “Shut the hell up, nerd, and get back to training or I will leave you in the dust!”
I call out to the nerd before he walks away in a slump, “Hold up, nerd! Hey, can you help me with my other one? I want to work on my accuracy with my Aerial Ace, and you are really fast. You would make a great punchin- ahem- I mean a training partner.” He rubs the back of his messy green hair and smiles nonchalantly, “Sure, Sekai.” He readies himself, and I teleport high and initiate my Aerial Ace quirk. This attack is very fast, and even though the nerd is fast, I was able to hit him. He crashes into the floor and gets scrapes and bruises. I help him up, and he says, while groaning and chuckling simultaneously, “I don’t think you have to worry about accuracy. It seems pretty accurate to me, Sekai.” After he is up, I tell him, looking away so he won't see my face, “T-thanks for helping, nerd.” He says while patting my shoulder, “Any time, Sekai. That is what friends are for.”
I blush thinking, ‘Oh yeah, I have friends.’ Suddenly being reminded by his words. I approached Aya-chan so we could try to brainstorm further about our quirks for our ultimates. She tells me as we walk off to the side of the training area with that warm smile of hers, “I saw your moves earlier, Kai-chan. You are really amazing.” I blush harder hearing her compliment me, and I say, “N-not as amazing as you.” I pull on her sleeve and ask her, “Do you need me to be a punching bag for your training?” She sits down at the wall and thinks out loud in a whisper, “I honestly don’t know what to do. I have that mega punch, but I probably shouldn’t use that other one since it is a little too different from my quirk. Unless we have no other options.” I sit down with her and brainstorm ideas.
As we brainstorm, we actually come up with a combo attack where I teleport us both high up, and we spin as she shoots out her ink to blind many targets at once. Aya-chan is going to call it Ink Tornado. She also thought of partially taking some kunai knives from her arm tattoos into 3D, making a sharp armor. After thinking she is calling it Thorn Armor. As we keep brainstorming, I say, “You might not like this suggestion, but maybe some devices from Hatsume that you could tattoo on yourself? I was initially thinking of those capture nets, but now that I say it out loud, we have pokéballs that would behave the same way, so maybe not that specifically. Ooo! Wait, maybe a locking mechanism for the pokéballs so villains can’t come and go as they please?” Aya-chan makes a cute pouty face, and she says, “Actually, that is a pretty good suggestion… I just really don’t want to have to talk with her.”
I perk up with an idea and whisper in her ear to distract her from Hatsume, “I just thought of an excuse if you need to use that one move.” Aya-chan perks up and is nonverbally saying ‘spill it’. I whisper, “I mean, it isn't exactly a secret, but you could just say that you made those boulders ‘tattoos’ to weaponize.” She facepalms and says, “Sometimes I feel like an idiot when it comes to analyzing myself.” I flick her gently on the forehead, “Shut up. The only idiot here is me.” She returns the flick and says, “Now you shut up.” I smirk and lay my head on her shoulder as we continue brainstorming.
While we were here, I reminded her of Kamui Wood’s move, where he wraps several people in his wood to capture them. I tell her, “With your tentacles, you could probably do the same thing in your own way.” Aya-chan perks up, “Oh yeah! I sometimes forget that ultimates don’t necessarily have to be combative, and how I technically already have one. I could even call it Tentacle Prison, as an homage to him.” I responded while gently elbowing her, “And it is pretty awesome, too.” Aya-chan turns my head towards hers while looking at my lips, “You are pretty awesome.” She kisses me and says, “Your lips are pretty awesome.” She kisses me again, “Your blushing face is pretty awesome.” I blush furiously and stammer, “H-how c-can that b-be awesome?” She giggles while biting her lip, “Just like that.” Then she kisses me again.
Ida interrupts our moment in a scolding fashion, “Sekai and Kubo, there should be no forms of personal display of affection while school is in session!” We separate, and I clear my throat at the surprise of being caught. Aya-chan looks around at our classmates to get back on track, and she sees that a lot of them came up with ideas over the break, like Tokoyami can cover himself with dark shadow now, and the nerd seems to have changed his whole fighting style around his legs now. I originally was thinking of maybe using that Mega Punch TM on him, but if he is using his legs, he may want to use the Mega Kick instead. Everyone seems to have updated their hero costumes while we were gone on our mission. Aya-chan whispers as if inside my thought bubble, “We could probably help our classmates to become even stronger. However, the question is who gets what. Some of these we only have one of. The only ones we can get duplicates of are the ones that we can buy from the department store. Even then, some are seasonal imports that aren’t always available.”
She pulls out a notebook and writes down all the TM quirks we have, what they do, and their type to the side. Aya-chan says in a whisper, “We need to pick things for them that won’t be questioned. Like, Kaminari, obviously, will learn the Thunder Wave quirk and the Thunderbolt quirk. Nobody would question where he obtained those abilities.” I nod already on it. I pull out a pen and steal some space in her notebook and write the Water Pulse quirk for Tsu, while Aya-chan writes the Fire Blast quirk and the Ice Beam quirk for Todoroki. We struggle near the end of our list and are unsure about Koda, but we won’t be positive until we see the TM quirk react to him. We found some special ones that were HMs and can be reused, and we found fitting classmates for some of them.
Over the course of this week, we are going to try to sneak into their rooms overnight while they sleep and activate these TMs so they wake up with the knowledge. That saves us from having to explain where they came from. We doubled up on the Mega Kick quirk for the nerd and the class rep since they both use their legs, and that quirk doesn’t really seem like a quirk. These additional quirks don’t necessarily have to be ultimate moves, but can act as other tools in their arsenal as heroes.
Our list we came up with was:
- Kaminari- Thunder wave and thunderbolt
- Tsu-water pulse and surf??? (Surf may be too much water to be believable. Unsure whether to give it to her.)
- Todoroki- fire blast and ice beam
- Midoriya- mega kick, bulk up (Hoenn import TM)
- Hagakure- protect and reflect
- Bakugo- explosion
- Tokoyami- fly (hm), thief (Hoenn import TM)
- Sato- strength(hm)- seismic toss
- Shoji- submission
- Ojiro- iron tail
- Uraraka- psychic, counter
- Ashido- toxic and sludge bomb (Hoenn import TM)
- Aoyama- flash(hm)
- Jiro-Screech (Galar import TM)
- Sero- body slam (that he will use paired with his tape)
- Mineta- take down
- Yaoyorozu- Brick break (Hoenn import tm)
- Koda- calm mind???? (Hoenn import TM) (Not sure that it is compatible)
- Ida- double team and mega kick
- Kirishima- skullbash
Yaoyorozu approaches us, and we shut the notebook and put it away. She asks, “What are you guys working on?” Aya-chan says without skipping a beat, “We were just trying to work out some logistics with our ultimate moves. We were just about to practice.” She says while looking a little confused, “Odd, I could have sworn I felt your gaze.” Aya-chan says, smiling innocently, “Oh, you did. We were trying to get inspired and studying our classmates to see if we could create our own versions of moves. We didn’t mean to interrupt you.” Yaoyorozu says while drinking some water and snacking to recover from using her quirk, “It’s no bother. I needed a little break anyway.”
We spent the rest of the afternoon in classes, training our ultimates while Mr. Aizawa took his beloved afternoon nap. As agreed upon, Hagakure and Tsu met us in our dorm room after classes. Tsu says while sticking out her tongue in a teasing fashion, “I will be sitting in the bean bag chair since I know what happened on that bed, ribbit.” Hagakure giggles, “I will get the other one for the same reason.” When they get comfortable, Hagakure asks, “Sekai, can you explain what you meant earlier?” I respond, “Well, before I do that, I probably should catch Tsu up to speed with the truth about my quirk.”
We update Tsu about the details of my quirk and how All for One is after me because of it. She says, “I can see why you are keeping this a secret. My lips are sealed, ribbit.” I continue, “So, knowing how my quirk works, I was thinking of maybe going someplace where there is an item that would either disable her invisibility when worn or something. That way, she would have control of when she wants to be seen or not and not have to wait on you, Aya-chan.” Hagakure perks up and says, “That sounds amazing! Would I have to go with you?” We shake our heads, and Aya-chan says, “No, but it probably would be best if you joined us so we can confirm if they work or not before returning.” Hagakure squeals, “Eeeeee! I am so excited! When can we go?” Aya-chan sighs, “I don’t know. We have training for the provisional licensing exam this weekend. We might be able to go after, depending on how late it goes.”
Hagakure hugs us and says, “Thankyouthankyouthankyou! You two are the best!” Aya-chan says while gently squeezing her, “That is what friends are for, Toru.” Hagakure then says, “Hey, Sekai, you can call me by my first name, too.” I stammer, slightly flustered, “T-toru.” She squeezes me a little, and this feels nice. However, I would never say that out loud. Aya-chan asks me as we break apart our hug, “Hey, should we tell them the other thing in case we need them to cover for us?” I say while shrugging, “That is up to you. I’m ok with it if you are ok with it.” Aya-chan says in a whisper, “We got the principal’s permission to stay off campus since Garlic is so big, so we will be spending a lot of our time at our apartment and not here, but only on the condition that ‘we’ don’t visibly leave campus, per our arrangement with the principal.”
Hagakure says in an excited, hushed whisper, “That sounds so exciting! Can you show us?” I sigh, trying to find the words while Aya-chan holds my hand supportively, and then I say, “Before we do that, we need to tell you another secret that you can’t tell a soul. Well, I guess it would be easier to show you.” I nod to Aya-chan, and we both transform into Fumiaki and Hanzo. Hagakure is silently squealing and smacking Tsu on the arm repetitively, and she whispers excitedly, “I KNEW IT! I just felt like their energy was just like yours, and even called them the boy versions of you. Awww man! Why did my celebrity crushes have to turn out to be you?” We change back, and Aya-chan says, “We picked up this ability while traveling since we were repeatedly targeted by All for One, so you can’t tell anyone about this; otherwise, the work we put into our alternate personas will be wasted. We want to be able to hide in plain sight.”
Aya-chan says while standing up, “We can take you to show you our apartment, but we will have to do it stealthily since you guys don’t personally ‘know’ Fumiaki and Hanzo.” Tsu asks, “Did you get permission to have an apartment, or are you just saying that to make me feel better, ribbit?” Aya-chan sighs, “Yes. Principal Nezu gave us a list of conditions, and if anything happens, then we will have to move into the dorms officially.” Tsu says while looking slightly uneasy, “I would feel better talking to the principal to confirm myself, before I go visit your apartment.”
We nod, understanding where she is coming from, and we take her to see Principal Nezu, who explains all the conditions and why he let us have the apartment, while Aya-chan, Tsu, and Hagakure pet Jewel, who is enjoying the attention. Principal Nezu says at the end, “I am glad that you brought some of your friends into your secret. When facing a powerful enemy like All for One, it is best to have friends by your side. That is why we at UA emphasize teamwork. Team-ups are a necessary part of heroing.” After saying that, he sips his tea, which has finished steeping, and nibbles on some cheese. Jewel seems to like cheese like a normal house cat, abandons the pets Toru and Tsu were giving her, and goes to beg for some of the cheese the principal has. I unknowingly pull on Aya-chan’s sleeve to make sure she is seeing the cuteness, too.
Once they have officially been added to the loop, we leave the principal’s office. We huddle, combine our quirks, and stealthily teleport to our apartment. We quirk-walk the outside of the building in 5D and phase through the mirrored window into our plant-filled living room, and Aya-chan pulls everyone out in 3D. She isn’t even out of breath, and she says, “Welcome to our home. Let’s give you the tour.” We let our friends out of their balls so they can stretch their legs and chill in their favorite spots while we give them a tour of our place.
Toru says excitedly, “I really like the movie theater room with the recliners and the huge screen. That is so cool!” Tsu says, “I really like the pool and the hot tub. The view is incredible.” They were utterly shocked when they entered our bedroom. We have indoor potted trees near the headboards on the sides of the smushed-together king beds, beside the nightstands, and paintings from Mom hanging on the walls. Aya-chan says as we continue walking through the house, “We want to buy more plants for Garlic to decorate with. Those plants would help fill up the loads of empty space we have.” Toru asks, “How did you guys afford all of this?” Aya-chan pulls out a ruby from a tattoo and says, while holding a finger to her lips to nonverbally relay that it is a secret (… like most everything else about us), “We collected some gems while in another world, and we sold them for a fortune here.”
Toru asks after the tour, when we return to the living room, while plopping on the sofa, “So, how did you two become famous?” Aya-chan says while joining her on the sofa, “While in our disguises we were eating with Principal Nezu at that 3-star restaurant, The Golden Geisha, when a lady from a modeling agency approached us while we were eating and gave us her card.” She squeals, “Eeeeee! I’m so jealous! I wish I could get discovered like that, but nobody ever notices me because of my quirk…” Aya-chan chimes in, wearing that hero smile of hers, “Well, hopefully, that won’t be an issue for you for much longer.” Tsu says while looking lustfully at the hot tub, “Would it be alright for me to join you guys when you go? I don’t want to drag you down, but I'd like to be there in case you need backup, since you are going into a new world we know nothing about. Ribbit, ribbit.”
Aya-chan replies without hesitation, “I would never decline the offer for backup, and Sekai will be able to handle that just fine, too.” I nod in agreement. I asked Aya-chan, “How many gems do we have left?” Aya-chan lifts her shirt to show her gem tattoos, and there are two left. I ask her, “Should we pop by Hyrule to grab more before we go to barter with, just in case?” Aya-chan shrugs, “I would think these two would be fine, but we could be in and out of Hyrule in 10 minutes with a lot of gems since we know where to look and have your quirk. That, and we don’t have to share our bounty with Link this time, so more for us… Though since we will be using his house, we probably should leave one as thanks and also let him know we visited in case we miss him.”
Tsu asks while still lustfully eyeballing the hot tub, “So, what kind of place is this Hyrule?” Aya-chan then describes how it is very beautiful and peaceful, except for the castle's dark energy and the monsters we ran into. We also told them how nice the people were to Gang Orca and how they weren’t racist or anything. Toru asks, “Wait, why were you there with Gang Orca?” Aya-chan explains that we needed a pro escort when world-hopping while I was training my quirk, and Gang Orca helped since we were going to an unknown, possibly dangerous place. She left out the All-Might bit since we are keeping the dragon balls a secret. It feels nice to tell someone other than Aya-chan, weirdly. These secrets are extremely heavy, and it feels like some of the load is now being shared.
I ask Tsu since she is still lusting after our hot tub, “Do you want to test out the hot tub?” Tsu droops down depressively, “But, I don’t have my swimsuit, ribbit.” Aya-chan stands up, takes off her clothes, and says, “Who needs a swimsuit when it is a private hot tub?” We take off everything, including the wristbands covering the radars, and we all get in the hot tub. They ask about the radars, so we tell them the truth about how they track us. Hagakure asks about the second one on my wrist that was just green since the dragon balls are dormant, and I say, “This one has to stay a secret. Sorry, it is for the best. Just pretend you didn’t see it.” They nod understanding, and Tsu says, “You sure do have a lot of secrets. Ribbit.”
Aya-chan and I both sigh, and she says, “It is necessary in order to be safe. Otherwise, I would probably be dead and Kai-chan abducted by villains again. It isn’t like we want to be deceitful in any way.” I nod in agreement since I don’t really like lying either, while looking out of the window at the Musutafu skyline. We soaked in the hot tub for about 10 minutes, chatting. Tsu asks teasingly, “So, have you guys had sex as Fumiaki and Hanzo, ribbit?” I blush furiously at the line of questioning, go to get out, then pause, realizing we forgot towels.
Tsu laughs at my reaction and says, “That is a yes. Ribbit.” Toru is giggling, too. I ask Sir Floof, really wanting to escape while blushing furiously, “Sir Floof, can you do me a favor and grab me a towel?” He stretches from his perch, and he gracefully descends the staircase and goes to grab a towel for me. Aya-chan says with a wink, “I think we were a little hasty jumping in and forgot to grab towels to dry off with.” When he returns, I quickly escape the hot tub and dry myself while telling them, “Thanks, Sir Floof. I’ll grab the others so you can go back to relaxing.” He chirps and goes back to his loft for a bit longer.
After drying, we picked up food to go for us, Garlic, Sir Floof, and Squash on the way back to UA. While we got food, Fu-chan kept Tsu and Toru in 5D (since they are supposed to be at UA), and I took everyone’s orders and bought everything for us while still as Hanzo. After we got our food orders, we discreetly activated our quirks again and teleported back to UA with our food. We keep our transformations on as we eat since we will have to return as them anyway here shortly for optics. After eating, we did our ‘return’ to our apartment as Fumiaki and Hanzo. We went to bed a little early so we could be well rested for our mission tonight.
We decided to wait until midnight, when most of our classmates were asleep, to teach them TM quirks, and we will only do a handful at a time to make it less suspicious. We are going to start with Todoroki, Kaminari, the nerd, and Bakugo. Everything goes as planned, and we teach them one at a time to make it less suspicious, until we get to Bakugo, who is alerted to our presence in his room by his Observation Haki. He starts doing his small explosions, and we reveal ourselves and shush him, and he says quietly, very pissed off, “Why in the fuck are you in my room?”
