The Scientific Alchemist
Chapter 98: The Battle for the Abyssal Core
Section I: The Wall of Iron and Crimson
The void before the Sovereign Meridian was no longer empty space. It was a churning, three-thousand-mile wall of dark iron and screaming red static.
Ten thousand Vanguard probes, responding to the automated defense protocols of the Abyssal Core, formed a staggering, impenetrable sphere around the three-hundred-yard flagship. They did not move like ships in formation; they shifted like a cloud of metallic locusts, their jagged, irregular iron hulls grinding against one another as they unleashed a continuous, staggering wave of red kinetic static.
Inside the pilot-house, the light was blinding. The forward quartz viewport was washed in a blood-red glare so intense that Marcus had to pull his optical rangefinder back from his face to keep the lenses from scorching his skin.
"Sensors are overflowing!" Marcus yelled over the deafening, acoustic roar vibrating through the ship’s frame. His spectacles sat crooked on his nose, grease and cold sweat running down his temples as his fingers hammered calculated angles into his mica ledger. "Elias! The ambient kinetic density is exceeding twelve million ergs per microsecond! The front of their wave is creating a localized gravity wall, if we hit it at our current speed, the deceleration will sheer our forward hull plates off!"
"Jacob! Divert eighty percent of the spinal storage banks directly into the forward hull field!" Elias commanded into the copper mouthpiece.
Down in the cavernous engine room, three decks below, Jacob stood braced against the master control wheel, his muscles straining as he hauled down on the massive bronze flow-regulator. High-voltage violet arcs jumped from the auric bus-bars, illuminating his face in flashes of brilliant white-violet light.
"Forward field at eighty percent!" Jacob roared back through the comm-horn, his voice echoing over the thunder of the six thirty-foot flywheels spinning at fifteen thousand RPM. "The copper bus-bars are humming like cello strings, Elias! She’s holding, but the heat in the lower conduit is climbing past eight hundred degrees!"
"Hold it steady, Jacob!" Elias called back.
He raised his right hand, the fused auric-titanium slide rule locked firmly in his grip. His thumbs made lightning-fast micro-adjustments to the translucent cursor, aligning the logarithmic scale to match the exact mathematical inversion of the incoming red static wave.
Beside him, Lira stood on the mahogany console, her fur bristling with static electricity that danced along her spine in tiny blue sparks. Her forehead crystal erupted into a blinding diamond-white radiance that focused through the slide rule’s sight.
"Now, Lira!" Elias shouted. "Harmonic inversion!"
Lira opened her jaws and released a crystal-pure, apocalyptic tone that echoed through every plate, bolt, and beam of the three-hundred-yard flagship.
ZAAAAAAAAP-CRACK!
A mile-wide wave of radiant turquoise energy shot from the Sovereign Meridian’s bow. When the turquoise harmonic wave collided with the incoming wall of red static, the red energy didn’t pierce the flagship’s hull. The two opposing forces met in a blinding, instantaneous explosion of light and under the precise mathematical guidance of Elias’s rule, the red static was completely absorbed, converted, and redirected back into the swarm of probes like a physical shove.
Thousands of dark Vanguard probes, stripped of their magnetic containment by their own redirected power, collided violently with one another. Thousands of tons of irregular iron shattered in the dark, collapsing into a massive, expanding cloud of harmless metallic sand that blew away into the void.
Through the gap in the swarm, the path to the twelve-thousand-mile Dyson-cage lay open.
Section II: The Breach of the Dyson-Cage
"Targeting the primary structural nexus!" Marcus shouted, his hand sweeping across the three-dimensional projection globe on his desk. "Elias, the cage isn’t solid iron! It’s anchored by eight primary orbital nodes that channel the dead star’s gravity into the harvester arms! If we strike Nodal Point Four at the base of the central axle, the local gravitational containment will fail!"
"Jacob! Maximum power to the primary kinetic lance!" Elias commanded.
"Draining secondary Leyden banks!" Jacob’s voice boomed from the engine cavern. "Full flow to the nose cone!"
The Sovereign Meridian accelerated straight into the heart of the Abyssal Core.
As the flagship crossed the ten-thousand-mile perimeter, the immense gravitational pull of the dead neutron star inside the cage seized the three-hundred-yard vessel. The iron floorplates groaned under the sudden, immense tidal force, but the five-hundred-foot synthetic emerald quartz Master Anchor down the ship’s spine flared into liquid violet light, creating an internal gravitational bubble that kept the crew anchored safely to the deck.
Ahead, Nodal Point Four loomed like a mountain of dark iron, a colossal, three-hundred-mile bronze junction box where twenty structural ribs of the giant Dyson-cage met. Red lightning, thick as city blocks, arced across its surface as it attempted to draw raw magnetic power from the dead star to re-erect the probe wall.
Elias stepped to the absolute edge of the pilot-house deck, holding the slide rule aloft. The permanent teal light locked within its metallic core flared into a blade of pure, coherent energy.
"Phase angle: twelve point four," Elias dictated softly, his golden eyes unblinking as he locked the target crosshairs onto the center of Nodal Point Four. "Disruption frequency: locked."
He slammed the cursor of the auric-titanium slide rule home.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
A fifty-yard-wide beam of pure, coherent turquoise-and-gold light shot from the Sovereign Meridian’s nose cone. The kinetic lance traversed the fifty-mile gap in a fraction of a millisecond, striking Nodal Point Four dead center.
The three-hundred-mile bronze junction box did not merely explode its atomic bonds, tuned by the slide rule’s harmonic frequency, dissolved instantly. The twenty massive iron structural ribs connected to Nodal Point Four snapped like dry twigs, peeling back from the central axle in a brilliant shower of white-hot metallic sparks.
A gaping, five-hundred-mile breach torn in its outer shell, the Sovereign Meridian plunged straight into the interior of the Abyssal Core.
Section III: Inside the Abyssal Core
Inside the twelve-thousand-mile Dyson-cage, the crew was met by a sight of terrifying, cosmic grandeur.
At the exact center of the vast, hollow sphere floated the dead star, a crushed, six-mile ball of super-dense neutron matter that burned with a cold, intense blue-black light. Surrounding the star, like leeching parasites clamped to a dying god, were eight massive, ten-mile-wide First Era intake conduits the original harvester arms constructed a century ago to siphon the star’s rotational energy.
However, the intake conduits were severely corrupted.
Thick, crawling webs of black, crystalline static the exact same parasite frequency that had infected Zenith Station and the Antarctic Vaultbwrapped around the eight intake arms.
The parasites were forcibly over-drawing energy from the neutron star, causing its gravity well to pulse erratically, threatening to trigger a localized spatial collapse that would tear the surrounding star systems out of alignment.
"The original design..." Marcus whispered, dropping his stylus as he stared out the quartz viewport in utter shock. "Elias... Chief Architect Vaughan and Master Julian didn’t build this place as an automated weapon! This was the Primary Kinetic Generator for the entire galaxy! It was designed to transmit clean energy down the interstellar slipstreams to every outpost in the sector!"
"Until the parasite signal infected the primary intake," Elias confirmed, his voice cold and analytical. "When the First Era cartels broke the balance ninety years ago, the harvester lost its harmonic governor. It stopped distributing power and began hoarding it... consuming every magnetic field that came within range to keep its own corrupted core from collapsing."
Down in the engine cavern, the acoustic hum of the dead star was vibrating through the ship’s hull with teeth-jarring violence.
