Chapter 789: Dunes of Hope & Despair 2

Chapter 789: Dunes of Hope & Despair 2

After some two weeks of nomadic life, Reize and Yomi had finally decided to settle on one of the villages they had liked. Veyrmar village.

It was full of greenery, the lake was nearby, and the people in the village had origins from all three countries. They were welcomed there instead of being seen as outsiders, especially with their slightly darker skin tone, betraying their old empire origin.

But now this.

Reize had heard only the absolute worst things about the red knights while travelling. Never did she think it would have anything to do with her. But even as a prisoner, these zealots might think she and Yomi belonged to that black clothed demon organization. Reize was not stupid enough to think she could clear her name in any way.

’My only option is to.. Go back to him.’

Reize’s mind concluded as she stopped running. The house they had made their home for the last month was in front of her. Yomi had already heard her loud footsteps; the constant sounds of explosions were also something hard to miss. Even before asking Reize what had happened, Yomi quickly brought their horses. They were already prepared with rations and camp tools. It wasn’t the first time they had to run from trouble.

Only when they were on their horses, putting the village behind their backs, did Yomi ask,

“What happened?”

“Red Knights,” Reize answered, “Looking for me.”

“Why would they specifically look for you? No one even knows our names here..”

That was indeed a mystery. Reize had trained to never leave a trace of her existence behind. Even right now, both she and Yomi had changed appearances. Nothing too much, just enough that no one would be able to recognize them with just their eyes.

Something was going on here, but she didn’t have enough information to find out what.

Suddenly, the two sisters heard the sound of someone chasing behind them with loud, fast footsteps. Reize pulled out a small, foot-long, round steel rod wrapped in white cloth for better grip. It was another runic tool she and Damian had made for fun. A sword without a blade.

Reize poured her mana into the rod’s runic structure and, in a flash, a translucent double-edged air blade materialized. It also had an enchantment, with the help of which Reize could change the properties of the blade from air to water, fire, light, and even a full solid aura blade. Normal people like her couldn’t use the aura blade without significant mastery in aura control. She could use the other forms, though.

However, a knight dressed in red never appeared; instead, it was a boy dressed in simple pants and a half-naked top with cloth wrapped around his head. Common old Empire poor villager clothing.

“Kora!” Yomi exclaimed.

Reize relaxed a little and cancelled the runic tool spell. She had seen the boy loitering around their house at times. He was an orphan supported by the village; his parents had died in the war against the demons. Yomi had talked with him several times; Reize could see clearly what the naive boy was thinking.

“What are you doing here?” Reize asked, slowing down a little. This update is available on NoveI[F]ire.net

“Take me with you!” The boy answered, “I am strong, I can help you.”

“Go back to your village, kid.” Reize ignored him and kicked her horse to continue the unknown journey ahead.

“Go away, Kora. This is very serious!” Yomi also spoke up.

But the boy did not listen to their advice at all. Reize and Yomi continued riding, thinking the boy would eventually tire and leave them alone – but he didn’t. A pugilist, pretty good one at that for a first ranker.

Reize had decided to scare the boy away with her runic cannon, but the second she pulled it out of her spatial storage, a strong flash of light appeared in her vision, blasting the forest path they were traveling on, resulting in a big earth-shaking explosion of fire, light, and dirt.

Reize, along with Lumi and Kora, had been thrown aside with just the force of the shockwave along with the two horses.

Something more dangerous than she could handle.

Reize left the runic cannon alone and instead grabbed the steel waygate cube and pulled it out of her spatial storage. She was still in mid-air when she did it. Reize balanced herself and, with difficulty, landed on her two feet, unlike Yomi and Kora, both of whom were thrown on the ground on their backs.

Even a rune-shaper, Reize, was still a second-ranker and boasted the stats of being a top-tier enlightened after all the fights she had been through.

After landing, Reize did not waste even a second trying to see who had attacked them. She rushed towards the fallen horse, beside her luggage, the two mana tanks were strapped to the back of the horse. Quickly, Reize reached near it and punctured a hole in the steel liquid mana tank; the opening mechanism was broken under the weight of the horse.

Reize touched the liquid mana and poured all of the mana into her body directly into the waygate tool. It shouldn’t take more than a minute. But even that seemed too long. The heavy clattering of the steel armor could be heard clearly by all of them as the man slowly inched closer.

Reize gestured for Yomi and Kora to run towards her silently, once the dirt settled a little and she could see them again.

Hopefully, the armored man was proud enough not to take them too seriously. Other than her runic tools, that was the only thing Reize could count on.

Reize tossed the runic sword tool towards the pugilist boy, instructing him to channel his aura into it. Yomi was an esper with her own methods of fighting. The second the red armored knight presented himself, Reize unleashed blast after blast of her runic cannon, all the while continuing to pour mana into the waygate tool.

Fortunately, the cannons were enough to keep the red knight captain occupied for a few precious seconds as the man quickly chanted an air shield spell and added it with aura to defend himself against the powerful cannon blasts.

“Hurry! RUN! RUN! RUUUN!!”

Reize shouted as the blue shimmering waygate opened. But before any one of them could reach the blue waygate, a figure shot out of it. At a speed that only registered in her eyes as a blur, Damian grabbed the armored man’s head with a single hand and threw him several meters away effortlessly.
