Chapter 794: The fifth day of the development trial (part 6)

This composite bow is the gift Aster mentioned he was preparing for Kana, and it was specially tailored for the little girl, its shooting range is not that larger when compared to the longbows, around a third more meaning it can cover a bit more than a kilometer.

The bigger differences between this composite bow and the longbows that the other girls were using, is first and formal the strength needed to properly draw the string.

To give you a general idea, the Olympic standard for drawing force in terms or archery it’s between 20 to 30 kilograms at its highest, that’s of course not the limit of the drawing strength a normal human can achieve, but that’s a stable limit than practically any healthy adult can achieve with training.

Now, the longbows created with the help of the wood frames made by the elders and the strings crafted by Aster, require five times that, so those forty girls even if just for a moment can achieve around 150 kilograms of grip strength with those pretty hands of theirs, needless to say but they are all bow user cultivators so it’s not like they were complete amateurs who hadn’t trained their hands before, also bow intent users have it easier in this aspect than arrow intent users, due to their respective focuses.

And then we have Kana, whose composite bow might not double the shooting range of the longbows, however the strength needed to fully draw it is indeed twice that of the longbows, so that little girl just used 300 kilograms of grip strength to shot an arrow at the head of that wolf, her arrows were also specially crafted to endure such a strong propelling force as well.

It was a monstrous bow made to demolish enemies at long distances, it was basically hand crafted personally for Kana whose intent is arrow one, so instead of focusing in shooting range, Aster improved stability and accuracy.

With all that said, it’s not like those girls need to use their full strength when shooting every arrow, it depends on the distance said arrow has to travel, they are not close range fighters so they can’t maintain such high strength for a long period of time, but they explode with it when it is needed, the sole exception to the previous is probably Kana, as Ley learned when he was punched on the face by the little girl who can change from long range to close range combat with the help of Esmeralda’s jade element.

"I kind of feel bad for anyone who tries to fight little Kana at close range in the future", mumbled one of the archers.

"Humph, if they are trying to punch little Kana they deserve to be beaten black and blue", added another girl making the others softly giggle.

They already knew Kana had some insane grip strength, after all she could clash with the black horse head on blocking his hooves with the spears she wielded

"So, did you like your gift?", asked Aster to the little girl who was all smiles right now.

"Mm, thanks big brother~", happily said Kana, she who originally wasn’t interested in anything related to combat, was now happily holding onto that killing bow, which made a few girls gaze at Aster.

"You are going to be hit with lightning some day for turning little Kana into such a warmonger, you know", said the ligress girl to which Aster shrugged, certainly the little girl descends from the "meek" side of the non-poisonous branch of the Storm Roc race, while Sarina comes from the warrior side both are Breezehearts instead of Tempests, the difference is that Sarina is a warrior by innate while the little girl has become one in part because of the strong will she inherited from Sarina and in part because of her own circumstances and Aster’s training.

"If it happens, I’ll take it as a sign that I’m doing a good job", jokingly said Aster.

’Wanting to tease me, how cute’, thought Aster as he smiled at the ligress girl, making her softly growl at him.

Back to the fight, it took the bear a moment to process what just had happened, he couldn’t understand how the enemy was able to kill one of them from such a large distance and with the trees in the way.

’We can’t charge from the front, we aren’t safe retreating to the border of the forest either... damn it’, thought the bear.

Obviously, there was not enough time to cover the whole area with the pit traps, so Mina and the others focused in blocking the path that directly led to the camp, but there is still an open space at the side where the lake is positioned.

Of course, at this point the bear knows that there is no way a "clear" path was left by the enemies, even if it didn’t directly lead to the entrance of the camp, unfortunately the bear doesn’t have the option to retreat, once this sole instance ends, he will lose the army and will have to deal with the whole human camp by himself, which means he will absolutely die.

"Go to the left, stick to the shore of the lake and advance!", roared the bear which made Aster smirk as he saw the remaining hundred something dead animals from the first batch of the army.

They stuck to the shore of the lake to avoid the pit traps, which is a good idea, the soil near the shore is not apt for a pit to be dug, due to the proximity to water it will be too humid, so the pit would collapse, in other words the bear actually took a wise decision.

Unfortunately, he didn’t take it out of his own will, but was forced to do so, because he couldn’t advance directly nor could he retreat, unless he wanted Kana to take the seconds in command one after another, maybe the kings were safe since due to the distance they would be able to dodge the little girl’s arrows, but anyone below that would die nine out of ten times.

’Are there actually no traps set up there, but why?’, wondered the bear as he saw the dead animal group crossing a third of the distance without any trouble, of course that wasn’t the case, Aster had a reason to leave a path adjacent to the lake free from obstacles.

"Kana, do the honors please", said Aster, which made the little girl’s eyes sparkle as she waved her hand at ten girls from the battle peak that were stationed next to the walls that faced the lake.

"Open the eastern wall!", shouted Kana.

"Opening the eastern wall", answered the girls as they pushed open the second gate that was designed by Eris and the girls of the rune mastering peak, the main gate opened the path to the forest, while the eastern gate opened the path towards the lake such was the arrangement, in fact that was a third gate but it’s irrelevant as of current so let’s focus on the eastern gate.

"Clip-Clop!", loud sounds which seemed familiar yet unknown for the bear echoed through the battlefield whose eyes widened as he saw horses pulling on some strange "objects" where the two-legged creatures were standing.

"What are those!", exclaimed the bear, a question that was answered by Aster.

"War Chariot unit, charge!", that was Blair’s contribution to the group with the help of the initial technique of her manual, she adjusted a few of the pulling carts that the black horses used to transport heavy objects, to become war chariots, there were only five of them in total but up to three girls could fit standing.

With two normal horses pulling on the chariots, and three girls who had learned the basics of horsemanship, one driving and another two with bows, the group advanced towards the enemy, surprisingly the one leading them was Sarina who was riding on Selene’s back.

"Fire!", the blonde motherly roc girl gave the order and the remaining ten archer girls of the sect, who happened to have had interest in horsemanship by pure coincidence and were taught how to better maintain balance by Kana and Ember, drew their bows, they were using simpler versions of the composite bow Aster made for Kana, they didn’t need such a large shooting range because they were a highly mobile unit, as they having already travelled three hundred meters in a matter of seconds, suggested.

"Whistle!", with less than two hundred meters of distance between them and while still moving, those girls released a rain of arrows upon the incoming enemies, all of which landed on the head of their target, the dead animals hadn’t fallen to the ground before the archers already had a second arrow placed in their bows.

"Turn!", with Sarina’s order, the group turned around and retreated a hundred meters, before Sarina gave a new order.

"Charge!", since Sarina was at the end, when she made a turn, she returned to be at the front of the group, the chariots needed a couple of extra seconds to maneuver and take the turns, but it was all within expectation.

"Fire!", the order came at the perfect time, twenty more arrows found their way to the heads of the still charging animals before Sarina gave the order to turn around again, they retreated another hundred meters before charging and taking out another twenty animals.

"Retreat!", the bear had committed a mistake, he thought that the horses will return to the camp after taking out twenty of his subordinates, never did he imagine that the enemy could maneuver so perfectly, they had travelled exactly four hundred meters, so they could make four rounds of charging and retreating, that would be eighty animals before they would find themselves with their backs at the walls of the camp, then they could shot one last volley of arrows, so he would lose a total of a hundred animals.

Meaning that less than fifty would reach the camp, it wasn’t worth it, so he gave the order to retreat, but that was the second mistake he committed.

"Dead animals trying to outrun war chariots pulled by two of us, nonsense!", exclaimed the mare to which Sarina nodded.

"Charge!", the might of a highly mobile unit was perfectly displayed by the girls of the sect, as they chased after the retreating animals, managing to shot down another forty of them, so the bear still ended up losing a hundred animals, what’s worse is that the woman leading the enemy unit was wise, she gave the order to retreat at enough distance so that even if he ordered a surprise charge, they would be unable to catch up to them.

"Damn it!", the bear cursed, he broke a tree in half with his right paw as he saw the eastern gate opening and the war chariot unit return to the camp with zero casualties on their side and a hundred killed enemies.

"These chariots are amazing, I could only land six or seven out of ten arrows when riding on one of the horses, but with the chariots it’s way easier to aim", said one of the archers as she got off the chariot to drink a cup of water offered by a girl from the green lotus.

"It’s thanks to little Kana’s balance focused training, otherwise hitting half of our targets would be the limit", added another girl.

"I never thought that we could work together so well with just the help of some wood, how interesting", said Selene as she saw her fellow horses happy with their performance, ten horses and fifteen humans killed more than three times their total number in a matter of minutes and since two horses pulled on a single chariot, they also saved some energy, they could make another round like this one at full throttle before needing some rest to be at their prime.

"I wanted to ride with sister Ember alongside mom and miss Selene", mumbled Kana as she saw the happy archers and their respective horses, to which Aster patted the little girl’s head.

"You are our best archer, your arrows are meant to take out seconds in command and apply pressure on the kings, and there was none of that in that bunch of cannon fodder, you and Ember will have their chance to shine later", he said.

"Mm, I’ll listen to big brother~", said Kana as she focused her attention on the bear and the other kings, the seconds in command who saw the little girl gazing their way, instantly hid behind a tree, afraid of showing their heads.

"Snake leader, you know what to do, don’t worry the others will block the pressure of that white snake", said the bear to the snake king who seemed to hesitate for a moment, but ultimately obeyed.

"Charge!", with an order, around eighty, two-meter sized snakes which were hiding near the shore of the lake dived into the water, they were desert snakes so seeing them swimming was weird as that completely went against their nature.

But since they received help from supervisors, Aster didn’t pay any mind to that, in any case it’s not like he wasn’t prepared for water combat.

"Espi", Aster looked at the little wyrm who nodded at him in response.

"Hisss!", Espi didn’t use her pressure she simply loudly hissed to communicate her order to her subordinates, in this case to the young anaconda leader whose head was hiding behind a floating trunk, in a matter of seconds a dozen of adult anacondas who were hiding underwater, surfaced to then slide towards the incoming desert snakes.

"Crack!", needless to say but while those desert snakes had a maximum length of two meters, the anaconda’s length started at two meters, not to mention that they way outclassed their opponents in terms of weight and maneuverability in water, so just a few seconds after the initial clash, bone cracking sounds could be heard coming from the water, followed by the anacondas diving into the lake drowning their enemies as they forced the oxygen out of their lungs with their strong constriction force.

Of course, since the anacondas were outnumbered in a four to one manner, some snakes managed slip through the defense perimeter created by the young anaconda leader, around thirty snakes made it to the shore of the lake that directly faced the eastern wall of the camp which finally brought a sense of relief to the snake king, only for the ligress girl’s voice to give him a bad premonition.

"Now!", with Mira’s order, the girls whom she had taught how to fish put some distance between each other on top of the platforms to then throw a large net.

"Clang!", the metal weights that were tied to the net made loud sounds as they landed on the ground, trapping all the snakes in a single go.

"Hissss!", the desert snakes were already panting after swimming for their lives to escape from the anacondas, when they were suddenly pressed to the ground by a heavy net, they immediately lost their composure and started retorting and hissing in a try to escape, unfortunately it was futile.

The eastern gate opened and the fishers came out wielding spears to then finish off the snakes that were trapped on the net, which earned them a nod of approval from the ligress girl.

"Looks like teaching you all wasn’t a waste of time after all", said Mira, of course the cold on the outside but warm on the inside ligress was praising those girls, she just didn’t do it in a direct way.

The anacondas dragged out the corpses of the dead desert snakes one after another and piled them on the net which was then dragged by those girls towards the camp, the materials of dead animals couldn’t be used but those were living snakes until a moment ago so their corpses had to be retrieved, also it wouldn’t be hygienic to leave them on the lake as that could contaminate the water.

And that was another eighty animals down the drain, this loss hurt the bear more because those were living snakes and it devastated the snake king because those were almost all his subordinates, he now only had his ten seconds in command that remained at his side.

Unfortunately, the very second, he was about to lose it as he saw the corpses of his subordinates being taken away by the enemy and use his pressure to attack the fisher girls that were about to pass through the eastern gate to return to the camp, a sharp glare fixated on him.

"Hisss", a cold light flashed through the little wyrm’s eyes, that was a clear threat, if the snake king used his pressure, she will use hers against him, the bear was blocked by Guardian so even if the wolf and lynx kings helped him, he will still suffer a loss and his subordinates were already dead at this point, so he forcefully swallowed his anger, but still looked at the bear with discontent.

’Why is that bastard taking so long... finally we just need to provoke a bit of chaos on their walls, humans are prompt to panic if their lives are in danger, then we can all charge and overrun them’, thought the bear.

This was the plan outline he was given by the "beings in the sky" he only needed to cause some chaos on the walls of the enemy, humans might speak pretty words but when their lives are in danger, they only worry about themselves at most they will take care of their close ones, so breaking their defenses will be easy once they achieve the previous.

Of course, this was the understanding of the supervisors that were helping the bear and his army, and they knew nothing about Aster’s close relationship with his teammates, those cute girls trusted him with their lives and Aster wouldn’t stoop as low as to mistreat such good girls, well, to begin with even if the enemy did reach the walls, no one will panic, but they needed to actually climb them to know that, and that wasn’t going to happen.

"Screee!", the king of flying beasts let out a powerful cry before she extended the yellow banner which she held with her left claws to then descend from the sky, landing on the railing of the platform in front of Aster.

"Fifty meters ahead, it was really slight but I saw the surface of the ground shake a bit, it was circular shape of around fifteen meters, it’s coming towards the frontal wall at a slow speed", said the giant eagle.

Earlier she missed one enemy so with her pride on the line she has been observing the slightest details on the battlefield, and her efforts finally paid off, the enemy in the shadows had a slight slip.

"What do you think, Dahlia?", asked Aster to which the girl from the green lotus answered.

"Mmm, they must be moving underground but close to the surface and probably stumbled upon a rock that blocked their way, taking a detour would have wasted too much time so they moved it and caused the disturbance that miss eagle saw", she knew how large the underground rocks stuck into the ground could be, after all she had to unearth many of them during the day and they were a pain to deal with.

"They must be spiders then, there are some who are good at digging, especially in desert environments, that being said they don’t go too deep underground, twenty centimeters to thirty centimeters is the limit and considering they are not making traps but moving and the soil here is harder than sand, maybe a third of that at most", said Aster as he smirked.

Here and interesting fact that the bear failed to notice, or more accurately he didn’t pay attention to, there was no grass on the ground in a hundred meters around the camp, all of it had been removed and this was a recent adjustment based on the digging marks left behind.

"Mylene, your turn", said Aster which made the pink haired girl smile.

"You heard that girls, let’s show them the strength of alchemists!", she said.
