Chapter 759 - 759: The third day of the development trial (part 12)
While those cute girls were going crazy over the end of the sword sparring match, since they definitely didn’t expect things to go the way they did, in more aspects than one, after all no one expected those two to get the hang of mortal combat style so fast.
Speaking of the two Fey princesses, they were still landing face up on the ground, with pouts on their pretty faces as they gazed at Aster with clearly accusing eyes, they had the words “Couldn’t you have ended things in a much more swordsman-like way”.
On the other hand, both Agnes and Valentina looked quite gloomy, which made Aster laugh to his insides.
‘Heh, look at these cute princesses, acting all depressed when they should be smiling from ear to ear’, he thought to then say.
“It looks like you two ladies got a bit too invested in the “fun” part that you have lost sight of your own achievements”.
“Mm?”, naturally such words, drew the attention of both Agnes and Valentina who were trying really hard to think in that last exchange of movements that took place a moment ago.
“Ah, this is why dealing with cute enthusiastic girls is so tough, I can’t bring myself to properly scold them… it’s not that you lost after only being able to land three attacks on me, it’s that I was only able to get through your styles with absolute confidence after receiving three of your attacks”, said Aster, which shook those two princesses to their core for a split of a second.
The scene of Aster waiting for the fraction of a second in which their attention naturally shifted from their swords to him, perfectly avoiding their attacks to then hold onto them and smack them against the ground, using their own strength on top of that, was still imprinted in their minds.
Even if for a short moment, Aster had totally seen through their movements, reactions and even his instincts, so they had absolutely no way to land those last attacks, that being said, it did take him quite the effort to get to that, which is not something to look down on.
Today was the first time those two were training in such a wat and they still managed to endure that many exchanges against Aster, it’s quite praise worthy, especially in the eyes of those that do know how monstrous Aster is, like Alice, Aria and the other girls.
‘He is right, even if I, no, both Agnes and myself are contenders for the top sword user within our generations, I’m not arrogant enough to think that we will win a pure sword fight without any cultivation nor martial arts against him, in fact I doubt anyone below the Heavenly realms could actually trouble him, there will be a need for an extreme age/experience gap between himself and the other party for such a thing to happen and even then, who would win wouldn’t be set in stone, he is that talented with the sword but that’s not the most important part, the way he must have trained in mortal rank swordsmanship was probably… inhumane’, thought the purple lightning princess.
Valentina might not be haughty but she does take pride in the seriousness she puts in everything she wants to achieve; she is harsh on herself when it comes to training out of her own will and she enjoys turning even the most mundane things into a way to train, she doesn’t do even a second less of training, she is that much of a responsible girl.
And Agnes is the same, her attitude might be much more carefree when compared to her cousin, but her obsession when it comes to the sword and her physical training are second to none, neither of them had… the leisure to enjoy their lives until they had achieved that much after all.
But then, why did they lose against Aster, was their training lacking in comparison, maybe in terms of concept, yes, Aster trained both in the ways a cultivator would and in the ways a mortal would, but if it comes to resolve, those two don’t lose in the slightest.
In fact, Aster himself is sure that when it comes to sheer “will” there are quite a few among the present who won’t lose to him, and those two knew it, after all they won’t admit to be second to anyone when it comes to that.
“It wasn’t a matter of resolution, dedicated time or experience, right?”, mumbled the sportsy sun diamond princess, which made Aster smile as he nodded.
“Well, I certainly did restrict myself and a lot, otherwise with all the studying I have done over mortal rank combat, I would have been ashamed of myself if I didn’t win without receiving a single scratch from two maybe fierce and not sheltered but still inexperienced princesses”, jokingly said Aster, which made those two softly snort at him.
“Humph”.
“It was a difference in “concept”, said Aster not wanting to tease them too much, before adding.
“I’ll call this a “lesson” but the truth is that I only understood this myself not too long ago, no matter how strong, talented, ruthless, rich, lucky, cunning or even crazy someone is, there is a limit to what a person can accomplish alone and anyone who says otherwise is either stupid, a liar or a combination of both”.
“…”, those two exchanged gazes for a second, both knew exactly what Aster was referring to, it’s not like they were absolutely alone, they had at least one trustable relative, besides having each other and their older cousin, in other words Aster’s godmother.
But certainly, most of their training was done by themselves… alone, they confirmed and evaluated their advances with each other, from time to time but that was it.
Aster on the other hand, trained with at least four people as in Lilia, Rya, Alice and Aria every day, since he started to seriously try to fit in this world, the number of people he trains with has been growing a lot as well, so that was the difference here.
‘Well, there is also a bit of difference in intensity, since a certain someone would use the “Woundless Sword of Love” to teach me how to defend even from the most crazy and impossible angles known to anyone’, thought Aster as he looked with accusing eyes at a certain black-haired beauty with red eyes who was rolling on his bed at the top of Hyperion, while laughing.
In case you wonder, the previously mentioned “technique” is basically getting beat up with a wood sword, imbued with healing properties, so the more you get hit the healthier you become, there are no side effects and no visible marks on the body as well, but the pain while short-lived is still there though and that was a stapple in Aster’s training, courtesy of Lilia, since the moment he fully recovered back then.
Seeing the light in those two’s pretty eyes changing, and more importantly feeling the atmosphere around them changing even if a bit, Aster was sure that “flaws” that didn’t exist in the two princesses had just appeared, in other words they just obtained a chance to grow.
“Sheesh, it took me so many years to learn that and I had to “give up” such precious knowledge after being in this place for less than a year, what a shady and exploitative sect is this”, said Aster as he sighed.
“Pffft~”, the girls from the sect couldn’t help but laugh out loud, brightening the slightly solemn mood from earlier, as those two were receiving “enlightenment”.
“Humph, what shady, as someone who holds the title of “Lord of the Twin Sword Valley”, you are to guide and take care of your junior sisters with everything you have, that’s your duty as the Holy Son of the sect, after all you wouldn’t believe that all those privileges are for free, right Agnes?”, said Valentina as she returned to responsible strict older sister mode.
“Mm, we have to make sure we get back till the last bit of our “investment” in Aster”, added Agnes as she nodded at her cousin.
This actually has a much deeper meaning than what you might think, in case you don’t remember, when Aster originally agreed to come alongside Agnes to join the sect, he made it clear that he didn’t want anything with strings attached to it.
Aster declared that if they were to be inconvenienced by the sect, they’ll simply leave without a second of hesitation, but that is obviously no longer the case and in part such decision was taken after Aster learned the “lesson” he just shared, something that happened back at Esmeralda’s realm, so he’s also grown “thanks” to the sect, which was making Lilia laugh from within the mind space.
‘Well, looks like those two have reached the mutual understanding of teaming up in order to “wring you dry”, darling~’, said that lovely dragon mother of his.
“Looks like letting you two team up is just asking for trouble, so the last match will be just between Agnes and myself, it would be troublesome if miss Valentina gets “fired up” like before”, said Aster.
He wouldn’t be himself if he didn’t get back at those two after all.
“Hehehe~”, of course what followed were the cute giggles of the girls from the sect, while Aster chuckled as he saw the purple lightning princess’s face redden on the spot.
“O-Of course, unlike Agnes, I have a lot of other activities to supervise after this”, said Valentina as she stiffly got up from the ground in order to leave the battleground to return to her observant spot, but the moment she passed next to Aster she nearly jumped out of happiness when she heard him saying.
“It’s not like you are banned from having fun you know, I sure pay attention to all my teammates but it’s not like I can train with them individually at all times like they would want to, so they learned how to entertain themselves in my absence”.
“And you seemed to have a lot of fun “playing” with Agnes, so why don’t you try out, I can think of at least five girls besides Agnes, that you’ll click with, not only while in this state, but even when we return to the sect”.
Naturally, Aster was referring to Eris, Mylene and of course the grumpy ligress as they can easily cross realms to fight way above their own, as for the fourth and fifth girls, well, Mikaela and Layla are there.
It didn’t escape Aster’s eyes that Valentina was brimming with happiness on the inside, which of course was noticed by the purple lightning princess.
‘Ughhh, to think I’m acting in such a way, I nearly died out of embarrassment after I grew up out of my “rebellious phase”, cousin you did it on purpose!!!’, inwardly screamed poor Valentina as she calmed herself down.
“Thanks…”, it was really soft and barely noticeable, but the purple lightning princess ultimately smiled for a second as she answered, before returning to where the disciples were waiting with water, cute expecting eyes and a lot of questions.
‘Such stubbornness, dealing with a lot of beauties is not a bed of roses like everyone believes’, jokingly thought Aster, to which Lilia casually added.
‘But you prefer it this way, right darling~’, to which Aster simply smiled to himself, of course what would be the fun in life if he was surrounded by broken submissive dolls, instead of those rebellious lively girls.
And speaking of that, Aster cleared his throat as he felt the piercing intense gaze of a certain sportsy sun diamond princess who not only saw but also heard that small interaction between her cousin and Aster.
‘Siding with sister Valentina after making me go and say all those embarrassing things through my talisman, not to mention that time when I was talking about hand holding but got a kiss instead which he was using to mock me earlier… humph!’, her thoughts might sound cute, but when paired with the sharp gaze she was giving to Aster, it becomes obvious that Agnes hasn’t realized that her interest in him might differ than friendship and the Fey’s lineage innate curiosity.
On the other hand, it is true that her interest has grown stronger
“Ahem, let’s change things up for the last match, we won’t put a strike limit, but a time one instead, what do you say?”, asked Aster, one thing that the “little” sportsy sun diamond princess is also not conscious of, despite having experienced it herself, is that Aster is also an expert in contenting the girls he teases.
And as expected, the “prey” was immediately enthralled by the bait that the big bad dragon had set up in order to capture her.
“Really, no strike limit?”, mumbled Agnes to which Aster nodded in response.
“Yes, that means that you can try to pull of any sort of tactic without caring for the “wounds” you’ll get in the process, what’s more, you’ll have access to all the equipment we have used so far”, said Aster with a smile.
“Mm!”, and with that, poor Agnes had fell for the trap, which made quite a few girls to give Aster accusing gazes, since they have been in that same situation before, especially a certain grumpy ligress girl.
‘Cunning lascivious dragon’, thought Mira, on the other hand she couldn’t help but admit that the “victim” in question looked genuinely happy with the whole thing.
“Let’s change to unused training equipment, otherwise we’ll end up with a bunch of splinters instead of wood training swords, spears, daggers and shields”, said Aster as he looked at the worn-out sword, spear, shield and dagger he has used
Agnes was the same, she looked at the equipment she has used which was on the verge of crumbling apart, in fact it was amazing that it had held out this much, it worked as a proof of how unique this place is, after all just like the animals and even the “Immortal” grade herbs they obtained earlier, the trees don’t have a speck of spirit energy in them.
“They weren’t made to endure such a fierce user after all”, added Aster, which made the sportsy sun diamond princess blush a bit.
‘He sweet-talked that little girl into such an obvious trap…’, thought Valentina as she sighed to her insides, before she narrowed her eyes at Aster, as she felt embarrassed knowing that she probably fell for something like that so easily before.
Ignoring the gazes that were trying to pierce a hole through him, Aster received the brand-new training equipment that a junior disciple brought to him, while Agnes did the same thing.
Those cute girls had even gone an extra mile and tied ropes on the handle of the shield, so that if either Agnes or Aster wanted it, they could put it on their backs like Aster had shown them to.
What’s more, Agnes even turned around as she was receiving her equipment, because she didn’t want Aster to see where she was hiding the dagger, which made him softly laugh.
Aster on the other hand, hanged the sword on his waist at his left while the dagger was at his right, he held onto the spear with his right hand and wielded the shield with his left hand.
Agnes on the other hand, went with an interesting approach, as in she was holding her sword with her right hand and the spear with the left one, the shield was on her back and who knows where she had hidden the dagger.
Well, Aster could have possibly guessed it if he really put his mind into it, but he didn’t want to ruin the fun of the sportsy sun diamond princess, since she was getting in a better mood now.
“Double weapon for starting, instead of shield and weapon, isn’t that a bit too… reckless?”, mumbled a junior disciple from the White Sword faction, to which a girl from the Black Sword answered.
“I kind of expected it from sister Agnes, just look at her eyes, she was really looking forward to this”.
That girl was right, even compared to earlier when Agnes was having fun by teaming up with Valentina, she looked more enthusiastic now.
“By this point you all probably have a good idea of how fight at mortal rank, so this last match is not to be taken as seriously but to be used as inspiration, look at how different weapons can be combined to achieve your goal and pay attention to the way they could be used against you”, said Aster to which the girls from the sect nodded.
And with that the last demonstration match of the first training session started, it was also the last one Agnes will be doing today, because both Valentina and herself are itching to train with their swords, wanting to put the new insight they had gained to work.
Since Aster had the shield protecting his front, he took the initiative to advance, the girls from the sect knew why, the shield is not only used to defend, you can pressure your enemy with it.
“Clack!”, the sportsy sun diamond princess opened with a quick thrust which landed on Aster’s shield, despite Agnes only wielding both her sword and spear with one of her hands, her attack wasn’t light in the slightest, as the sound of wood colliding against wood from before, suggested.
‘Would you look at that, she really could have been a spear user instead of a sword one, if she would have wanted to’, thought Aster.
The sportsy sun diamond princess attacked the central area of the shield so that Aster couldn’t deviate it easily, like it would have happened if her attack had landed on the border of it.
She even went with a thrust instead of a sweep, because Aster would just smack her attack away if that was the case, it was quite a good opening move, if there was a downside to the previous is that she of course was not going to be able to pierce through the shield with a wood spear, and since she hit the central area, the backslash of the attack hit her in full.
But Agnes is a tough girl, so she simply shrugged it off and directly continued by retrieving her spear and slash her sword instead.
“Clack!”, this time Aster chose, or more accurately had to block with his own sword instead of the shield, because that cunning princess had aimed to slash his right knee, which of course wasn’t within the immediate area protected by the shield.
But that couldn’t be everything Agnes had in mind, she retrieved her left hand alongside with her spear, which she then used to sweep at Aster’s right leg.
Agnes wasn’t even trying to slash Aster with the head of her spear, instead she aimed to break Aster’s balance by force, she even aimed at a height which would make Aster take the hit if he dodged by jumping upwards like before.
In other words, she really was making use of everything she had learned so far, of course Aster dodged by moving to the side instead, to his right to be more accurate since that way he wouldn’t let go of Agnes sword which he had blocked with his own.
But then in an interesting turn of events, the sportsy sun diamond princess instead stabbed the spear on the ground and then dashed on the ground to then as fast as she could extend her now free left hand, towards her back.
Apparently, Agnes had hidden the dagger right behind her waist area, so that it wouldn’t be visible just from the front, which indeed took Aster by surprise, because he thought she had hidden it inside her shirt.
“Got you”, mumbled the sportsy sun diamond princess as the tip of her dagger reached Aster’s foot, of course after a quick glance there was a slashing mark on her leg and a thrust mark on her side, which were given to her when she dashed at low height.
But what’s important is that she got a point “easily” at the start of the fight, which by the way still had around eight minutes left.
