Chapter 422: Chapter 280: Peace Has Always Been a Luxury (4)
Morris had also received Golem operation training.
His pass got him to a location less than twenty kilometers from the combat zone.
The latest Golems developed by the Loman Empire had solved a key drawback: the operator no longer had to be nearby. The maximum control range was now up to thirty kilometers.
A Golem control squad happened to be stationed at the very spot Morris reached.
None of the advisors participating in the war set foot directly on the battlefield. They all operated through mediums like Golems or unmanned Mechanical Armor, facing virtually no personal risk.
But Morris didn’t reveal himself to the Golem squad. Instead, he chose to film them secretly from a distance.
He wanted to see what the front was really like.
Thanks to his higher education, Morris outranked these soldiers by one level.
And as everyone knows, things are never what they seem when a superior is conducting an inspection.
Morris set up his camera from afar and cast a listening spell.
’My time at Repin wasn’t a waste after all.’
The camera was high-quality, capable of clearly capturing the Golem control operations even from a great distance.
The Golem control terminal used by the Loman Empire was clearly influenced by Zog’s game consoles.
It might even have been a direct copy.
The Golem was controlled by a device similar to a game controller, while an Illusion Technique was used for the display, synchronizing with the Golem’s vision.
Judging by the Illusion Technique’s display, the squad primarily used heavy ground-firepower Golems, with Scorching Beams as their main form of attack.
Scorching Beam was originally a second-ring spell, but the ones mounted on the Golems had been amplified by a Rising Ring, significantly improving their range, power, and number.
Through the Golem’s vision, one could see a city that had been turned into ruins.
That was Augustine City.
Not long ago, this place had been a tourist attraction.
Now, only broken walls and ruins remained, along with people struggling to survive among them.
A moving target appeared on the screen.
Morris magnified the image. It was a child, probably not even ten years old, fleeing in terror.
No matter how you looked at it, that child posed no threat to the Golem.
Just then, the squad’s conversation came through his listening spell.
"Report, target spotted. It’s a kid."
"There are no children on the battlefield," the Squad Leader said. "I’ve said it many times. There are only enemies, or potential enemies. And what do we do when faced with a potential enemy?"
"Sir! Eliminate all potential enemies."
"Very good."
Morris’s heart clenched. ’Are they really going to attack that fleeing child?’
’What threat could a child possibly pose?’
’Is he some kind of genius Mage Apprentice?’
"Wait," the Squad Leader suddenly pressed down on the operator’s hand, which was about to fire the beam. "Let him get farther away."
Morris breathed a slight sigh of relief. ’Looks like my fellow countrymen haven’t become completely, irredeemably insane yet.’
However, just as he was about to get up to meet the squad and discuss his filming, another one of the Squad Leader’s comments came through his listening spell.
"Alright, he’s far enough. Place your bets. Over or under three beams to hit."
"I bet over, Five Copper Coins! This guy can never shoot straight!"
"I’ll trust him this once. Ten Copper Coins, under..."
The other soldiers immediately started placing bets, their excitement and practiced motions making it clear this wasn’t their first time.
"Hurry up and shoot, hurry up! If he gets any farther, you’ll never hit him!"
"One shot!"
"You missed that? Do you even know how to shoot? How did you pass your training?"
"Two shots!"
"A hit! A hit! Hahaha, see? Didn’t I tell you to trust him this once? Where’s the money? Hand it over, all of it! Don’t even think about welshing. You’ve already done it once!"
"Hey! Hey! No way! Look, that brat can still crawl. It only broke his legs. That doesn’t count."
"Doesn’t count my ass! The bet was whether he’d hit him or not."
...
Then, they began to argue about whether a child could survive after having both legs blown off.
On the Illusion Technique’s display, two bright red trails of blood stretched longer and longer across the dusty ground.
