Chapter 298 - 234: Gordo’s Middle-Aged Love
Chapter 298: Chapter 234: Gordo’s Middle-Aged Love
Late at night. Sir Gordo Craig’s residence.
His personal attendant, Morris, was in his room scrolling on his phone. Two hours ago, he had decided to go to sleep "right away."
Clearly, that "right away" was taking a while.
"Okay, for real this time. Straight to sleep," Morris muttered to himself.
Sir Gordo provided excellent compensation for his live-in attendant: a luxuriously furnished room of over 860 square feet, complete with a private bathroom and a recreation room.
Normally, a student in his twenties wanting to buy a place like this in Twin Tower City would have to spend at least the next forty years of his life paying off the mortgage, not to mention clean out his parents’ savings.
Moreover, the process of buying a home would bring about a curious little transformation.
Before buying, you’d pray every day for housing prices to drop. After buying, you’d instantly become someone who didn’t want prices to fall.
Living the life of a tenant, but with the anxieties of a landlord.
And in the "landlord’s" house, there were a dozen or so other empty rooms just like it.
Morris had originally thought he was receiving special treatment, getting assigned such high-end accommodations.
After a tour of the residence, he realized he’d been flattering himself; this was just the standard room in the Gordo household.
Because Gordo had no family living with him, he didn’t require a large number of servants, leaving many rooms unoccupied.
On a side note, that "tour" had taken him a full three hours.
What normal person’s home has a horse stable, a garden maze, and even a zoo?
A zoo!
Morris didn’t recognize most of the animals inside. He’d heard that raising rare and dangerous animals was a form of social entertainment in aristocratic circles.
’If they’ve got money to burn, they can give it to me.’ That was Morris’s take on such a hobby.
Gordo’s massive estate unnerved him a little.
The rooms were too big; he felt like someone else was hiding in the shadows, watching him.
Perhaps because he’d seen too many horror stories, he always imagined someone conducting terrifying experiments in this huge house, like creating zombies or something.
Then he’d be trapped here, dealing with the estate’s various dangerous traps while facing a zombie crisis.
’It’d make a good premise for a game.’
Finally, just as his eyelids were about to close, Morris put down his phone. It was time to sleep.
He’d fallen asleep holding his phone before.
Just as he was tossing and turning, trying to find a comfortable sleeping position, Sir Gordo’s rapid and labored gasps suddenly came through the monitor.
Morris was instantly wide awake.
A monitoring system connected the master bedroom to the attendant’s bedroom. It was there to ensure someone was always aware of Sir Gordo’s condition, especially in case of an emergency while he slept.
According to the terms of his Contract, if any unusual sounds came from the monitor, the attendant had to go to the master bedroom immediately.
Frustrated, Morris pulled the pillow over his head. To be honest, he really didn’t want to go.
But after a moment’s hesitation, he threw off the covers, sprang out of bed, and went to perform his duty.
He ran to the master bedroom, opened the door, and found Sir Gordo convulsing on the bed, struggling to breathe.
’What did the caregiver’s manual say again? Right, it’s a side effect of the medication.’
Morris immediately followed the manual’s instructions, first wetting a towel to cool Sir Gordo down.
"Don’t worry, you’ll be alright," he said reassuringly.
This was also specified in the manual: this sort of breathing difficulty was partly psychological, and a bit of reassurance would help ease it.
Sir Gordo’s breathing gradually steadied.
Morris let out a sigh of relief. Rushing to the master bedroom had been the right call. If something had happened to Sir Gordo because of his momentary laziness, he’d probably want to slap himself just thinking about it later. ’Damn it.’
He looked into Sir Gordo’s eyes and felt a sense of trust and support from them.
Seeing the crisis was over, Morris decided to go back and get some sleep.
Just then, applause suddenly erupted from behind him.
"Excellent performance!" Zog praised. "Much better than when you first started."
"You guys... where did you come from?" Morris didn’t understand what was going on.
It wasn’t just Zog who had suddenly appeared, but also two camera operators and a sound engineer.
"We were here the whole time, just invisible," Zog replied.
"Invisible? Didn’t the shoot already end?" Morris remembered the film crew leaving in the evening.
"That’s because you weren’t in the right headspace. You were always so conscious of the cameras during filming. So, we changed our strategy to one where you simply wouldn’t know you were being filmed."
Zog was proud of his brilliant idea. "And now it seems the effect is great. Your performance fits the character perfectly. No technique, all emotion."
"Wait, what?" Morris put a hand to his forehead, taking a moment to process. He suddenly realized the problem. "Are you telling me there’s been an invisible camera following me this whole time?"
"That’s right. I hope you can get used to it. All the upcoming shoots will be done this way. As long as you can’t guess where the camera is or when it’s on, you won’t be bothered by it."
"So just now... when I was in my room, showering, sleeping... that was all filmed?"
"Don’t worry, any footage that isn’t suitable for broadcast will be edited out. Trust my professionalism."
Zog added, "This was all written in the Contract. I thought you read it."
"I did read it, I read—"
Alright, Morris hadn’t read it at all. He’d been too excited at the time and had just signed his name.
’So you really should read contracts carefully after all.’
A lingering fear gripped Morris. Thank God he’d only been lying in bed playing on his phone. If he had engaged in a little ’handiwork,’ he’d never be able to face anyone again.
