Chapter 394: Chapter 394: Cooperative

A day later, Liam’s heat arrived with enough force that the entire private wing quietly reorganized itself around him.

Not because anything had gone wrong.

That was precisely what made the situation so strange.

Liam was eating when food appeared in front of him, drinking whenever someone reminded him, and resting without first attempting to negotiate his way out of it. He still read, still complained when a technical text used terminology he considered imprecise, and still tried to keep track of several engineering projects from the sofa, but the sharp resistance that usually accompanied any suggestion involving his own care had softened almost completely.

"This is disturbing," Severin said from beside the fireplace.

Liam looked up from the heavy book resting across his knees.

"What is?"

Severin gestured vaguely toward him.

Liam followed the movement as though expecting to discover something objectively concerning about his appearance.

He was curled into the corner of the broad cream sofa beneath a thick blanket, one leg folded under him while a mug of hot cocoa rested on the table within easy reach. The room itself had been kept warmer than usual, with the autumn rain tapping steadily against the tall windows and a low fire burning beneath the dark stone mantel.

The only genuinely ridiculous element was the sweatshirt.

It was soft cream, oversized enough to bunch around Liam’s hands when he pulled the sleeves down, and the hood had two rounded bunny ears sewn into it.

Arik had bought it months ago after deciding Liam looked best in clothing designed to destroy whatever remained of his imperial dignity.

Liam had refused to wear it.

Repeatedly.

This morning Arik had held it up and asked whether he wanted that one.

Liam had looked at it for perhaps two seconds before answering yes.

Arik had been insufferably pleased ever since.

"I am reading," Liam said.

"You are wearing rabbit ears."

"Bunny ears," Arik corrected from the armchair beside the sofa.

Severin looked at him.

"That distinction matters?"

"Considerably."

Liam’s gaze moved slowly between them before he returned to the technical volume about early Nurian ether classifications.

Rubis stood near the low table sorting the day’s documents into several smaller stacks, although Liam had already caught him watching twice to make sure the cocoa was still being consumed.

"You are both hovering," Liam said.

Rubis did not look up.

"I am organizing your schedule."

"You canceled my schedule."

Arik smiled.

Liam noticed.

"Do not encourage him."

"I have learned better."

"That is a lie."

Arik reached over and pulled the blanket higher where it had slipped from Liam’s shoulder.

Liam let him.

Severin’s eyebrows rose.

Arik saw the reaction and gave him a warning look before turning back to Liam.

The physician had already explained that this first natural heat after almost two years of suppression could be unpredictable. Liam’s hormone profile was recovering quickly, but nobody knew yet whether the cycle would stabilize normally or produce the exhaustion, fever spikes, or glandular strain that sometimes followed long-term suppression.

That uncertainty had settled the matter for Arik immediately.

No sex.

No pushing Liam simply because heat instinct made him receptive. No assuming that physical desire meant his body was ready for the strain of a full mating cycle.

Arik was enjoying the heat enormously anyway.

He had discovered that he did not need anything beyond this.

Liam spent most of the morning tucked either against his side or directly in his lap while Arik worked through election reports and signed whatever documents Rubis brought into the private wing. Whenever Liam became restless, Arik walked with him through the suite. Whenever his temperature rose slightly, the blanket disappeared and cool water replaced the cocoa. When he became tired, Arik simply gathered him closer until he slept.

Liam accepted all of it with an ease that would have been impossible any other week.

He turned another page.

His brow furrowed.

"This is wrong."

Severin looked almost relieved.

"What is?"

"The classification." Liam tapped the page. "They combined structural ether contamination with natural affinity variance as though they were the same phenomenon."

Rubis glanced toward the book.

"How old is it?"

"Almost a century."

"That may explain it."

"It explains why they were wrong. It does not make them less wrong."

Arik smiled into his coffee.

There was Liam.

Severin folded his arms.

"I was beginning to worry."

Liam narrowed his eyes.

"I am in heat, not intellectually compromised."

"No one said you were."

"You implied it."

Arik slipped one arm around Liam’s waist before the discussion could gain momentum and drew him gently sideways until Liam rested against his chest.

Severin watched the movement.

"So this is what you meant when you said he becomes compliant."

Liam’s head turned.

"I am still here."

"I can see that."

Arik looked toward Severin.

"Do not provoke him."

"You have been provoking him for years."

"That is different."

"How?"

"I am his husband."

Liam sighed and returned to the book, although he made no attempt to move away from Arik.

A few minutes later, Arik reached toward the cocoa.

"Drink some."

Liam lowered the book, took the mug, and drank without argument.

The room went quiet.

Liam stopped halfway through the second sip.

His eyes narrowed over the rim.

Rubis immediately became fascinated with the documents in his hands.

Severin looked toward the windows.

Arik maintained an admirable expression of innocence.

Liam set the mug down carefully.

"If either of you comments, I will have you removed."

Severin’s mouth twitched.

"You would need to ask."

Liam pointed toward the door.

"Leave."

Severin laughed once, but he obeyed, taking two security reports with him as he went.

Rubis lasted another ten minutes before finishing the schedule review and gathering his tablets.

"The physician returns at four. Kamal will bring the infrastructure revisions tomorrow if you are awake enough to want them."

"I want them."

Rubis glanced at Arik.

Arik shrugged.

"He sounds awake."

Liam looked satisfied.

Once Rubis left, the room became much quieter, filled only by rain, the occasional crack from the fire, and the soft rustle of pages.

Liam managed another fifteen minutes before his reading slowed.

Arik noticed the exact moment his eyes stopped properly tracking the text.

"Tired?"

"A little."

"Come here."

Liam closed the book and moved without hesitation.

Arik opened his arms, and Liam settled across his lap, knees tucked beneath the blanket while his cheek found the familiar place against Arik’s chest. The bunny ears folded awkwardly between them until Arik adjusted the hood and freed one beneath Liam’s hair.

Liam made a faint, sleepy sound.

"You like this far too much."

"I like taking care of you."

"That sounded suspiciously sincere."

"It was."

Liam’s fingers curled into Arik’s shirt.

The teasing disappeared from Arik’s face.

Liam had spent years using suppression partly because he knew what heat did to his instincts, how easily his body accepted direction from an alpha once the cycle took hold. Even with a bonded mate, allowing that vulnerability had required a choice Arik understood had not been easy.

So he held him.

Nothing more.

His hand moved slowly along Liam’s back while smoky caramel settled around them, warm enough that Liam relaxed further into his chest.

After a while, Liam murmured, "Even if I ask?"

Arik knew what he meant.

"Even then."

Liam lifted his head slightly.

"Until the physician says everything is stable?"

"And until you are clear-headed enough that I know the decision belongs to you rather than the heat."

Liam watched him for several seconds.

Then he nodded and tucked himself beneath Arik’s chin again.

"Annoyingly responsible."

Arik kissed his hair.

"I occasionally manage it."

"Rarely."

Arik smiled.

Within minutes, Liam was asleep.

Arik remained in the armchair with one arm secured around his waist and the blanket drawn carefully over him, election reports abandoned on the nearby table.

For the moment, the empire could manage without him.

His eshara needed him more.
