The Rebirth of Humanity
Chapter 57: The Reclamation of the Lands
Several more weeks had passed since the superior races began withdrawing from the human lands.
Throughout that period, the withdrawal continued in an orderly manner.
Fortress by fortress.
City by city.
Region by region...
The lands that had remained under the control of the other races for five thousand years were gradually returning to humanity.
There were no battles.
Not a single front was opened.
No blood was shed.
But behind that calm, a massive undertaking was beginning to take shape.
For reclaiming the lands was merely the first step.
The next step...
Was rebuilding what humanity had lost.
In the human capital, the Supreme Council convened.
The council chamber was crowded with officials, commanders, and specialists.
Enormous maps stretched across the tables before them.
Maps depicting the territories that were beginning to return to human sovereignty.
The areas marked on the maps were immense.
Cities.
Villages.
Fortresses.
Roads.
Vast plains.
And entire regions that had remained beyond human rule for thousands of years.
One of the council members stood before the map and said:
“We have confirmed the withdrawal of the forces from most of the territories that have been handed over.”
One of the officials replied:
“And the withdrawal is still underway in the remaining regions. We expect more territories to come under our control in the coming period.”
Silence settled over the chamber for several moments.
Everyone stared at the map.
Then one of the council members said:
“Then the question is no longer how we reclaim these lands.”
He lifted his gaze from the map.
“But how we rebuild them.”
Those words marked the beginning of a new stage.
The Supreme Council issued its orders.
The actual reclamation process would begin.
The returning territories were divided into multiple administrative regions.
Human units were dispatched to the cities and fortresses that had been evacuated.
These units were not invasion forces.
They were security forces.
Their task was to protect the cities, secure the roads, and maintain order until the civilian administrations arrived.
And as soon as the forces arrived...
The human banners were raised once again.
Above the towers.
Above the fortress gates.
And above the old administrative buildings.
Banners that, in some places, had not seen the light of day above those lands for thousands of years.
In one of the ancient cities, the first human unit entered through the main gate.
The city was quiet.
Its ancient buildings were still standing, but the marks of time were evident upon them.
Some streets had been damaged.
Some buildings had been abandoned.
And in other areas, entire districts were in need of reconstruction.
One of the soldiers stopped in the middle of the street.
He looked around.
Then he raised his eyes toward the human banner that had begun rising above the main tower.
One of his comrades said:
“It feels strange to stand here.”
The soldier looked at him.
“Why?”
He replied:
“This is human land... yet it hasn't been under our banner for our entire lives.”
The other gave a faint smile.
“But it is now.”
The banner rose higher.
Until it reached the top of the tower.
And at that moment, the city began a new page in its history.
But reclaiming the land alone was not enough.
Humanity had to bring life back to it.
And so, the Supreme Council issued another order.
The reclaimed territories would be opened for human settlement.
The news spread throughout the human continent.
The ancient lands had returned.
And now their gates were open to anyone who wished to move there.
It was not long before the caravans began to move.
From the great cities.
From the villages.
From the agricultural regions.
And from distant settlements.
Humans began making their way toward the reclaimed territories.
The caravans carried everything.
Families.
Children.
Farmers.
Craftsmen.
Builders.
Doctors.
Engineers.
And everyone who could contribute to building a new life.
Along one of the long roads, a massive caravan was making its way toward a city that had only recently been returned to humanity.
The wagons stretched a great distance.
Inside one of them sat a small family.
A child looked through the window at the lands stretching around them.
Then he asked his father:
“Father... is this the land where our ancestors used to live?”
The father looked toward the horizon.
“So they say.”
The child asked:
“Will we live here now?”
The father smiled.
“Yes.”
The child continued looking outside.
The land was vast.
Quiet.
Empty in some places.
But he did not see emptiness.
He saw a place that could become a home.
Elsewhere, another family arrived at the outskirts of an ancient city.
An elderly man stepped down from the wagon.
He stood for a long time before the city walls.
The stones were weathered, and parts of the wall had collapsed.
One of his family members approached him and asked:
“Do you know this city?”
The old man shook his head.
“No.”
Then he added:
“But my father used to tell me about it.”
The young man looked at him in surprise.
“About this city?”
The old man nodded.
“He used to say that our ancestors lived here before these lands were lost.”
He remained silent for several moments.
Then he looked toward the human banner flying above the walls.
“I never thought I would see it return.”
Settlement was not merely a matter of moving people.
It was the beginning of a massive reconstruction effort.
Engineering teams began working immediately.
The old roads were surveyed and repaired.
Worn-out bridges were rebuilt.
Water networks began to be restored.
Damaged buildings underwent renovation.
And districts that were no longer fit for habitation began to be redesigned.
In some cities, the work focused on repairing the existing infrastructure.
In others, entirely new districts had to be built.
Construction sites appeared everywhere.
The sound of hammers.
The movement of machinery.
Wagons carrying construction materials.
Engineers studying maps.
And workers raising new walls.
The lands that had remained dormant for so long were coming back to life.
In the agricultural regions, another stage began.
Farmers arrived in the fertile lands.
They began examining the soil.
Repairing irrigation channels.
And preparing the fields once again.
After years without organized human agriculture, the lands began receiving farmers once more.
The scene was entirely different from the past.
This time, humanity was not merely attempting to return.
It was returning with the knowledge, technology, and capabilities it had developed over the past decades.
In the major cities, administrative teams began drawing up plans.
New government offices were established.
Police stations.
Medical facilities.
Supply warehouses.
Transportation centers.
And facilities to serve the new inhabitants.
Each city was being incorporated into a broader administrative system.
The goal was not merely to raise the human banner above them.
It was to make them true parts of the human state.
As time passed...
The effects of the transformation began to appear clearly.
Regions that had once been quiet became filled with activity.
Roads that had been nearly deserted became crowded with caravans.
Lands that had once been empty began receiving settlers.
And the ancient cities began to regain the sounds of life.
In one region, a young engineer stood before a city in need of extensive reconstruction.
He opened the map before him.
Then he said to his colleague:
“If we maintain this pace, we can have the eastern section of the city operational within a few months.”
The other looked at him.
“And the western section?”
He replied:
“It will take longer.”
Then he smiled.
“But we will rebuild it.”
The two looked toward the city.
It was not beautiful.
It was not complete.
But it was theirs.
In the capital, reports continued arriving at the Supreme Council.
A city secured.
A region settled.
A road reopened.
A fortress put back into use.
A farm beginning operations.
And a new project to rebuild an ancient city.
The numbers continued to rise day after day.
And the reclaimed territories gradually began transforming from mere lands returned to human sovereignty...
Into true human lands, alive with life once again.
During one of the council's sessions, an official stood before the members and said:
“Settlement has begun in most of the regions that have been secured.”
Then he opened another report.
“And large-scale reconstruction efforts have begun as well.”
One of the council members looked at the maps.
The reclaimed territories were vast.
He said:
“This will take years.”
Another replied:
“Perhaps longer.”
Silence filled the chamber.
Then one of the members said:
“That is fine.”
The others looked at him.
He continued:
“We waited five thousand years for these lands to return to us.”
Then he looked at the map.
“We can give them however much time they need to come back to life.”
No one objected.
As the days passed...
A new picture began to take shape.
In the reclaimed cities, human banners flew once again.
In the villages, families began settling.
In the fields, farmers returned to work.
And in the cities, new buildings rose above the remnants of the past.
Humanity was not merely reclaiming the land.
It was reclaiming its presence within it.
Meanwhile, in the capital...
The transformation continued as well.
The new Sovereign Palace was rising higher and higher.
The black and crimson walls stretched around the ancient palace.
And the capital itself continued expanding as new projects were undertaken.
It was becoming clear that the renaissance Fafnir had announced was no longer merely words.
It was becoming reality.
Everywhere.
In the cities.
On the roads.
Across the agricultural lands.
And throughout the territories that had recently returned to humanity.
Far away from all of this...
Fafnir was still in his secluded chamber.
He sat in silence.
His eyes closed.
Cosmic energy continuously swirled around his body.
Around him, the cosmic treasures that arrived one after another were being analyzed by the System, their energy extracted.
The energy flowed into his body.
Slowly.
But continuously.
And the remnants of his ancient injury were gradually receding.
On one occasion, Morgana entered the chamber.
She stopped at a respectful distance and said:
“Another shipment of cosmic treasures has arrived.”
Fafnir opened his eyes.
He looked at her for a moment.
Then said:
“Put them there.”
Morgana nodded.
She placed the shipment in the designated location.
The moment she did so, the System began analyzing it.
Data appeared.
Then the energy extraction process began.
The treasures glowed for several moments as the cosmic energy released from them gathered together before flowing toward Fafnir.
Fafnir closed his eyes once more.
And the chamber returned to silence.
Outside...
Humanity was moving.
Building.
Settling.
Repairing what had been destroyed.
And reclaiming what it had lost.
Inside...
Fafnir was doing something different.
He was reclaiming his strength.
Every day.
Every shipment.
Every particle of energy.
His body was gradually recovering the power he had lost five thousand years ago.
And so the two paths continued side by side.
Humanity was building its future upon its reclaimed lands.
And Fafnir was rebuilding his body in preparation for what was to come.
The months passed.
And the results of the reclamation became increasingly visible.
Some cities became fully inhabited.
New villages began to grow.
The main roads were reopened.
Trade began flowing between the reclaimed regions and the rest of the human territories.
And cities that had once been nothing more than ruins or abandoned regions gradually transformed into new centers of human life.
The process was neither fast...
Nor easy.
But it continued.
And that alone was enough.
For every new day meant that another portion of Gandalia had become part of humanity's renaissance.
One evening, an official stood on the balcony of a newly constructed administrative building in one of the reclaimed cities.
He looked down at the streets.
Families moved through them.
Children played.
Merchants opened their shops.
And workers continued building the new structures.
The official raised his gaze toward the sky.
Then he looked at the human banner flying above the city.
He said quietly:
“Not long ago... this land did not belong to us.”
He paused for a moment.
Then smiled.
“And now... it is a homeland once again.”
Humanity had not reclaimed everything yet.
And the reconstruction process was still only beginning.
But something important had changed.
For the first time in five thousand years...
Humanity no longer looked upon its ancient lands as something lost forever.
They had returned.
And now humanity was building upon them once again.
City by city.
Village by village.
Road by road.
As for Fafnir...
He remained in his seclusion.
He had no need to emerge.
Nor did he need to personally lead the reclamation efforts.
For he had given humanity something more important than its lands.
He had given it direction.
And he had restored its confidence that it could rise again.
And now...
Humanity was doing so on its own.
While walls rose in the reclaimed cities, homes filled with inhabitants, and fields returned to life...
Fafnir's body was regaining its strength in silence.
The outside world was changing.
Humanity was reclaiming its place.
The Sovereign Palace was becoming ever more magnificent.
And the ancient lands were returning to life.
All of it was happening at the same time.
As though all of Gandalia were slowly moving toward a new era.
An era in which humanity was no longer merely a people struggling to survive.
But a people that had begun reclaiming its heritage.
Building its future.
And preparing for something far beyond merely reclaiming what it had lost.
The reclamation of the lands had been only the beginning.
But humanity's true renaissance...
Had already begun.
