The gentle, soft motions made Gu Shengsheng feel sleepy.

After he finished, she asked, "Mr. Ryan, how many people’s hair have you put up? You’re so skilled."

"None. This is my first time."

Grandma, eating spicy strips on the side, grew even more cheerful. Seeing the young people together just made her happier!

’It’s great to be young,’ she thought. ’This kind of secret, budding affection... I’m totally hooked.’

After that, Gu Shengsheng decided to just help him wash vegetables and do other simple tasks. That much, she could handle.

Seeing the many small cuts on her knuckles, Lu Shijing sighed. "Don’t cook anymore. I’ve never seen anyone injure themselves this badly just from cooking."

Gu Shengsheng was speechless. Her hands had blisters from burns, as well as the cuts from carelessly chopping vegetables just now.

It was a rather gruesome sight.

Lu Shijing led her to the living room and took out some medicine to apply to her injuries.

When he saw her about to pull her hand away, Lu Shijing held it firmly. "Don’t refuse right now. Both of your hands are injured. It’ll be faster if I apply the medicine for you."

Sure enough, he was done in just a few minutes. Gu Shengsheng didn’t go back in to help; instead, she simply sat with Grandma and watched TV.

About half an hour later, Lu Shijing finished cooking and started bringing the dishes out.

He placed them on the dining table and said, "We can eat now, Grandma, Shengsheng."

The old lady chuckled. "We’re just like a real family now."

"Very nice, very nice."

Gu Shengsheng didn’t say anything, but she was thinking, ’Isn’t the way Grandma and Mr. Ryan interact a little too familiar?’

’Even if Grandma has been seeing a lot of Mr. Ryan lately, it shouldn’t be like this. It’s as if they already have a deep rapport.’

Gu Shengsheng still felt that something was off. There was always this strange feeling.

’It makes me feel uneasy. I have to find out who this Mr. Ryan really is.’

Just as she was thinking this, Grandma suggested they take a group photo.

Gu Shengsheng nodded and even offered, "Let’s use my phone."

’If I have a photo, and since Mr. Ryan is a business tycoon, I can ask Mr. Shang Jinhao to help me find out more about him.’

With that in mind, Gu Shengsheng didn’t refuse. She even agreed when Grandma suggested that she and Ryan take a photo alone together.

Lu Shijing was thrilled. ’Shengsheng is acting like this... Does this mean she’s starting to accept me?’

He kept a straight face, but after they were done, he asked Gu Shengsheng to send him a copy of the photo.

Grandma ushered them to the table. "Let’s eat! Let’s try his cooking. Shengsheng, while you were away, your sister-in-law and I were always going over to his place for a free meal."

"You have no idea. This kid’s cooking is amazing."

"Mm." Gu Shengsheng took a bite. It really was delicious. She ended up eating two whole bowls of white rice.

She ate until she was completely stuffed.

She was used to a cycle of feast and famine. So whenever she had the chance to eat something delicious, she had a habit of eating until she was stuffed.

Grandma tugged on Gu Shengsheng’s sleeve and pointed at Lu Shijing.

"Look, he really likes the dish you made. He’s eating it with such relish."

"Is it really that good?" Gu Shengsheng wondered.

’Could it be that my dish just looks bad, but actually tastes good?’

Holding on to this hope, she took a large bite, only to spit it out immediately.

’This stuff is disgusting! How could perfectly good ingredients turn into something so awful?’

"Throw it out! This stuff is completely inedible," Gu Shengsheng said.

But Lu Shijing protectively covered the dish with his hands, as if it were a gourmet delicacy.

"No way. I like it."

Gu Shengsheng was speechless. She’d met plenty of gourmands, but she had never met anyone who actually liked her cooking.

It was so exceptionally awful that even a dog would turn its nose up at it.

"Is it really good?" Gu Shengsheng asked.

Lu Shijing nodded. "Mm." Then he took another large bite.

For some reason, seeing this scene—being in her own home, with Grandma, and with someone so appreciative sitting beside her...

...in her own home, eating a simple home-cooked meal... it felt so nice.

She had experienced so few warm, gentle moments in her life. Now, it was as if a string deep inside her had been gently plucked.

While Gu Shengsheng was lost in thought, Grandma took her hand and said, "Hurry and eat. You haven’t been home in so long. I was worried you wouldn’t be able to get used to the food over in Anxi."

"The moment you returned, Zhao Dehai and the others dragged you off to work. Now that you’re finally home, you must have a proper meal."

She then piled meat into Gu Shengsheng’s bowl.

"Okay." Gu Shengsheng’s eyes filled with emotion. ’So I’ve been on her mind all this time.’

Just then, the old lady’s phone rang. "Linnin? What’s up? Are you not having fun out there?"

"Grandma, Sister Yang Jiao and I are at the door! Since our sister-in-law is home, we want to come back for dinner too!"

"Don’t you dare say no! If you say no, it means you have something to hide!"

The old lady glanced at Lu Shijing, then said, "Fine, fine, come on over!"

A moment later, Grandma announced, "My granddaughter is coming over to join us for dinner."

Lu Shijing feigned curiosity. "I’ve never met your grandson. Where is he these days?"

Mrs. Lu sighed. "That grandson of mine... he’s a real piece of work. Never been any good. I don’t even know if he’s dead or alive."

"If he were dead, at least we could find a body. What I’m afraid of is that he’s alive and hiding somewhere, unwilling to see his family!" Her eyes grew red, tinged with a hint of resentment.

Lu Shijing was speechless. ’Grandma’s doing this on purpose to curse me out!’

"Then your grandson really is a piece of work," he said, joining in on cursing himself.

"Exactly! He’s never even met his own wife. If he really does come back alive, our Shengsheng won’t give him the time of day. They’ll get divorced, and it won’t affect him, but Linnin and I will be abandoned."

Gu Shengsheng quickly reassured her, "That won’t happen, Grandma."

"When your grandson returns and we get divorced, it won’t affect our relationship."

Lu Shijing felt a surge of panic. ’At this rate, she’ll definitely divorce me when she finds out who I really am...’

’Even though I suspected as much, it still hurts to hear.’

Then Lu Shijing asked, "Miss Gu, if your husband likes you and is willing to take care of you when he returns, would you still divorce him?"

Gu Shengsheng nodded. "Yes. Without an emotional foundation, how can there be any talk of love?"

She found it strange. "Mr. Ryan, you’ve been in business for years and always have your finger on the pulse. Your thinking shouldn’t be so conservative."

"Besides, Grandma and my sister-in-law often encourage me to get a divorce and find someone I actually like."

Grandma gave a hollow laugh.

’Back when she didn’t know her grandson was alive, this really had been her plan.’

’But she never thought she’d end up digging her own grave!’

But she was shrewd and cunning.

She said, "Exactly! Whether Shengsheng has someone she likes or not, she’s like a daughter to me. I’m not worried. Some people, on the other hand, had better pray for their own luck!"
