Chapter 374: Thor! - Part 6
Thor stopped in his steps for a moment, before turning and saying, "I'm willing to be your chieftain, but I can't guarantee you that I will stay inside the tribe all the time. If you are okay with that then it's fine, if not then it would be better for your tribe to disintegrate as you say. What do you think?"
"I will be honored to follow you, Chieftain Thor. In fact, just having you inside the tribe will deter other large Barbarian Tribes from encroaching on our territory and help in keeping the whole Tribe from breaking away. As for daily management of the tribe, the rules are already in place, and the five elders are appointed to help in overseeing them." Karakh said with a smile. His goal was only to have Thor become part of the tribe, better if he could lead them as that would solve most of the problems for the tribe.
In fact, Karakh wouldn't have wanted an unknown outsider who he had only known for two days to become their chieftain. No matter how much Barbarians worship strength, they would still like to follow somehow from their own tribe and someone they know for a long time.
But Karakh's strength was not up to the mark to lead a large tribe such as the Antral Tribe for the time being, and also he didn't want them to disband because such a reason as that would severely constrain the resources they could gather from the Caragan Forest. Karakh and other young talented Barbarians wouldn't be able to make progress in their strength without these resources that need the power of a large tribe to gather and occupy.
Being one of the most talented ones in the whole Antral Tribe, Karakh naturally didn't want to see that happen and see his strength stagnate. That's why he wanted Thor to become their Chieftain.
As long as the tribe stays united, the other large tribes are deterred and some highly dangerous Demon Beasts around the Tribe are cleared from time to time, the chieftain can enjoy their free time as they like.
Karakh also explained the three most important duties of a chieftain to Thor so that he can convince him to agree.
Thor smiled after hearing Karakh's explanation.
Though Alex already had two kingdoms to run and managing another Barbarian might possibly turn into a headache for him but the profits of doing were so immense that it was easy for him to overlook the difficulties he would face in the future for doing so.
It would be very beneficial for him to control such a large Barbarian tribe that occupies a corner of the Caragan forest. This would enable him to access the resource-rich forest. There are countless other benefits to opening a trading route between his territory and the southern countries through the Caragan forest.
He was currently waging war with the Armen Kingdom therefore naturally in the near future they would try to block merchants of their own and western Kingdoms from trading with his Kingdom. though not a crippling move it would definitely give a hard time to the economy and development of his Kingdom.
The Barbarians might just help him bypass the Armen kingdom blockade by helping his merchants transfer goods through Caragan Forest to trade with other Kingdoms. It's not as easy as it sounds but Alex was confident that he would be able to work it out and make the Barbarians help him out if the Armen Kingdom closed its border with his Kingdom.
As for Chieftain's responsibilities that Karakh said he needed to ensure, they were quite easy for him to accomplish. Showing his muscle to other large tribes doesn't take much effort on his part.
Either go to the door of the neighboring large tribe and defeat their Chieftain in a one-on-one duel or show his strength in the festival that occurs every three years on the turf of the Tribe that represents the Ullesis. Keeping the tribe from disbanding is also easy. As long as he makes the five elders and their disciples submit, and pushes them to work together, the tribe will remain united all the time.
As for ensuring the safety of the tribe from Demon Beast attacks that live inside or near the territory of the tribe, Alex can easily clear the Demon Beasts in the surroundings every five-six months making it impossible for them to turn into Demon Beast horde and threaten the barbarian settlements that are related to this tribe. He could also have one of his Demon Beast's companions sit and guard the trib while he is not absent from the tribe in the future. The Demon Beast companion could also help him deter Barbarians inside and outside the tribe from having ill thoughts.
"Hm, Alright then! I will be your Chieftain." Thor said with a small smile on his face.
Both Norakh and Karakh looked visibly relieved upon hearing Thor agree to become their chieftain. They had just rebelled against their former Chieftain Romethra Antral, and they wouldn't able to fend him off if he comes back alive. With Thor covering their backs, they weren't that afraid of Romethra now.
"Let's talk about the details afterward, first you need to control this settlement and its inhabitants. Don't let them riot inside the village. I really need to go somewhere, so we will talk after I come back. Don't worry I will be back soon, and as for Romethra, you don't have to worry about him. My human friend will not let your previous chieftain come back alive, he is as strong as me if not better. even if Romethra manages to escape with his life, I promise he will not make it back to the tribe as he will die by my own hands."
"Oh! Before I forget, remember to look after those two human girls that Viscount Bardrick had left here. Keep them safe. Someone will soon come to take them away back to their home. They don't belong here. Good luck!" Thor said quickly.
Thor didn't care if Karakh and Norakh had anything more to say or have another question, he just turned and vanished from everyone's eyes just as he stepped out of the gates, leaving behind a small trail of dust in the air.
Just this action of his was enough to make all Barbarians warriors including the ones that had just dropped their weapons and surrendered look at the place where he vanished in awe. That speed was truly not something they could compare with, and there's nothing to say about brute power as not even Romethra is able to break the defense of the gates not to mention compare with Thor in speed.
