The Perfect Cultivator

Chapter 25: The War Beyond Heaven

The roar did not fade.

Rolling through the ancient sky as if the voice of the universe itself, it sent vibrations through the mountains and sent ripples through the enormous black gateways that hung above the distant civilization.

Ao Kuiba stood beneath the sky, his silver hair whipping around his face as he gazed at the colossal dragon.

There was a long pause as neither moved.

Then the scene changed.

The dragon vanished, and the ancient city remained, no longer peaceful. Something had fallen over the heavens.

Ao Kuiba looked up.

Something was falling.

At first, it looked to be a star, then another, then hundreds.

Massive fragments of something were falling from the skies, breaking through the atmosphere as they burned. The sky had turned red, and the earth trembled beneath the impacts of the fragments.

Then the largest of the pieces broke through the clouds.

Ao Kuiba’s pupils constricted.

It was a part of a dragon, a massive chunk of bone covered in golden blood.

It crashed into the distant wilderness.

At the moment of impact, the entire world shook, causing the mountains to collapse and the oceans to rise. Across the continent, ancient formations awoke, and the realm’s spiritual energy surged towards the crash site.

Then, the world fell silent for a moment.

Before the dragons came.

Thousands of them poured from the clouds, from the mountains, from the ancient cities and hidden domains. Some were enormous beasts with bodies that stretched across the sky, while some took the forms of humans, but all bears the unmistakable features of the dragon race.

They were not coming to celebrate.

They were coming to fear.

Ao Kuiba watched as several of the ancient dragons landed on the ground around the enormous crater. At the center of it all, a piece of bone lay embedded. Ao Kuiba could already tell the difference from afar; this was not just a piece of dragon bone. It contained a pressure that seemed to originate from the heavens above.

One of the ancient dragons lowered its head before roaring loudly. The others soon followed, for they had come to protect it.

---

The years began to pass.

A settlement formed around the crater, and then a city, and then an enormous civilization that wrapped itself around the crater and the dragon remains. The remains were encased in formations, their dragon clans, and powerful human cultivators guarding over them.

For centuries, nothing had happened.

Then the heavens cracked.

Ao Kuiba looked up as a spatial passage opened in the air beyond the atmosphere.

A man stepped through the passage, clad in black robes. His presence was rather terrifying.

However, the moment his feet met the land of Azure Heaven, his expression twisted in confusion. His cultivation was being suppressed. The laws of this world had bound him, and he tried several times to release his true power, only for the heavens above to crack and unleash lightning to drive him back.

He looked up in shock.

"Impossible."

More figures stepped through the spatial passage, all suffering from the same suppression.

Ao Kuiba realized the truth quickly; the Heavenly Dao had prevented higher-realm cultivators from bringing their true power into this world.

But the invaders did not leave.

Instead, they began their descent.

And the war began.

---

The first battlefield stretched for thousands of kilometers.

Dragons filled the skies, while human cultivators flooded the mountains, while ancient beasts charged through the forests, while the invaders descended.

Techniques filled the heavens, as the skies turned into a sea of fire.

A dragon swept through an army of cultivators with its claws, tearing through their formations, while another one unleashed a beam of golden flame that devoured an entire mountain range.

However, a higher-realm cultivator appeared before it, and the two dueled one another until the dragon’s body was pierced and it fell. Another dragon quickly took its place, then another, then another.

They were all fighting for the remains of the Dragon God.

And yet the invaders continued their attacks.

Decades had passed, and the cities became fortresses, and children had been born into the battlefield, growing into soldiers, and then their children, and then their children, continuing the endless war.

The dragons remained at the front lines, guarding the remains, dying to protect them.

Ao Kuiba watched as the generations passed before his very eyes.

A magnificent golden dragon fought for three days straight before it was surrounded by nine invaders. It killed four before it was killed by five, and a young dragon swooped down to take its body away. Another ancient dragon took its place.

The scene shifted, and hundreds of years had passed. The beautiful civilization was now a battlefield, and the entire land had been left in ruin. The mountains had been torn down and replaced by plains. The ancient cities were surrounded by crumbling walls.

The dragon population had begun to dwindle.

But the war had not ceased.

---

Throughout the countless battles, Ao Kuiba often saw the same woman.

At first, she was young, standing among a group of cultivators, watching the battlefield with a sword in hand.

Then the vision changed, and the woman grew older, her cultivation having reached a terrifying height. She stood before several invaders, all of whom had been brought down to the highest level of cultivation in Azure Heaven, but the battle was not easy.

One of the invaders used a technique that Ao Kuiba had never seen before, and the woman blocked it, but the earth beneath her shattered. She countered the technique and killed the invader.

Another one attacked, then another, and she fought until her robes were stained with blood.

Again, the vision changed, and another century had passed. The woman was now at the peak of cultivation in Azure Heaven, having become its strongest cultivator.

But she was tired.

The invaders continued to come, wielding cultivation techniques from above this world. Their bodies were suppressed, their cultivation restricted, but their mastery remained. Every battle required more from her, and every battle cost her something.

And yet, there would always be more enemies.

---

Thousands of years passed.

Ao Kuiba watched as the ancient world died piece by piece, its human sects vanishing, its ancient beast clans slaughtered, its cities reduced to ruins.

The dragons dwindled in number, and one day, an entire clan flew into battle. Three hundred dragons, and only seven returned.

Another battle came, and none returned.

The dragons continued, for they had become the final line of defense before the Dragon God’s remains.

Eventually, the only dragon bloodlines that remained were scattered.

The woman knew that they could not continue like this.

---

And so, the woman vanished from the battlefield.

She worked in secrecy for centuries, and Ao Kuiba watched as she shaped formations, one turning into ten, then into a hundred. A hundred into thousands. The formations spread across the mountains and the seas, across ruins and buried cities.

They were not offensive or defensive formations. They were something far greater, a formation centered on the entire realm.

The woman was preparing to seal off Azure Heaven.

---

The invaders had reached their final attempt, and the higher-realm cultivators had finally found the Dragon God’s remains.

They descended upon the ancient sanctuary where the bone lay hidden.

The remaining dragons gathered; there were not many left, but all that remained had come. Every surviving dragon, every remaining human cultivator, every beast clan that still fought had gathered around the remains.

The woman arrived last, looking across the battlefield as the invaders stood opposite her, countless spatial passages behind them, more reinforcements arriving.

She knew.

This battle would decide the end.

---

The battle began, and the heavens shattered. The dragons tore through the skies, and ancient formations detonated across the battlefield. Countless human cultivators died, and the remaining dragons fought with all their might.

A massive crimson dragon wrapped its body around the sanctuary, shielding the Dragon God’s remains from an attack, its scales shattered and its bones cracked, refusing to move.

Another dragon joined it, and then another, until the remaining dragons formed a ring around the sanctuary.

The woman raised her sword, and her cultivation exploded through the realm.

For a moment, even the higher-realm invaders hesitated.

Then she drove her sword into the ground.

The formation activated, and the heavens screamed.

A great barrier surrounded Azure Heaven, and the spatial passages collapsed. The invaders panicked, and some managed to escape, but many were caught.

The woman raised one hand, and chains of law fell from the heavens, binding the remaining invaders. One invader was sealed beneath a mountain, while another vanished beneath an ancient ocean, and another was pulled into a hidden dimension.

One by one, the invaders were imprisoned, and the woman continued to hold the formation together. Her body began to break down, and blood dripped from her mouth, her soul trembling.

And yet, she continued.

The final passage collapsed.

And the war was finally ended.

But it was too late.

---

The ancient civilization had been lost. Its cities reduced to ruins, its people scattered, and its dragons nearly gone.

The woman walked through the battlefield, passing by the bodies of cultivators she had known for centuries. She passed the remains of dragons that had guarded the Dragon God’s remains until their final breath.

Then she arrived at the sanctuary.

The Dragon Bone was still there, and she studied it for a while before she began another formation. This time, it was far smaller than the previous one, and it was focused on the bone itself.

The Dragon God’s remains vanished deeper into the realm, hidden, sealed, beyond the perception of the higher realms.

The woman knew she would not survive for long, and so she left behind a fragment of her soul, a wisp.

She placed it beside the sealed Dragon Bone as her remaining consciousness looked up at the heavens. The barrier had surrounded the entire realm, sealing Azure Heaven.

No higher-realm cultivator could enter freely.

But there was a consequence.

A path upwards had been severed.

No one within Azure Heaven would ever be able to ascend again.

The woman knew, but she accepted it. Better a world imprisoned beneath heaven, rather than one constantly under attack.

---

The vision began to shift.

Thousands of years passed in moments, and the ancient ruins were swallowed by forests. Kingdoms rose and fell, sects formed and shattered, and the names of the dead were forgotten.

The dragons became legends, the war became myth, and the truth was lost.

But beneath the earth, the Dragon Bone remained.

As did the woman’s soul wisp.

---

The vision suddenly returned to the battlefield.

Ao Kuiba stood alone, the ancient world gone, the armies gone, the dragons gone.

Only ruins remained.

He looked towards where the woman had disappeared.

Something appeared in the distance.

A flickering figure of a woman, translucent, almost invisible.

A soul wisp.

Ao Kuiba’s golden eyes narrowed.

She slowly raised her head.

For thousands upon thousands of years, she had waited.

And she was now looking right at him.

Her gaze fell upon the dragon bone’s energy surrounding him. Then she looked into his golden eyes.

For the first time, her expression changed.

Recognition.

Not of his face, not of his identity.

But of his blood.

The soul wisp slowly stepped forward, the ancient battlefield fading around them.

Ao Kuiba said nothing.

Neither did she.

The woman’s lips parted.

And the vision ended.
