The other side of Reincarnation
Part one hundred sixty eight— The Letter
The following morning brought strange visitors, and with them, a letter addressed formally to Kai. Ivy delivered it once he'd finished eating and bathing, and he took it, still floating lazily in midair, unhurried.
The letter was formal, precise, and considerably more ominous than its careful diplomatic language attempted to disguise — an official summons from the Onmyō Order, requesting his presence at a confidential meeting at the Grand Onmyō Citadel, signed by Grandmaster Kazuhiko Ono himself.
Not a threat, nor a command, the letter insisted.
A request for dialogue.
And yet, buried carefully within the same polite phrasing:
Your absence may have consequences that neither you nor the Order can afford to ignore.
"Onmyō Order," Kai said aloud, mostly to himself.
Elaine went completely still.
"Oh. This is bad. This is really bad."
"What's bad?" Kai asked, genuinely confused.
"You seriously don't know about the Onmyō Order?" Nyxara asked. "I thought we told you this already, once."
"I might have forgotten," Kai admitted. "Sorry."
"They're the single most powerful organization in the entire world," Ivy said, patient. "Even Nao Shimizu wouldn't oppose them directly."
"Since when do humans have that kind of authority?" Kai asked, disbelieving.
"When's the meeting?" Chloe asked.
"Seven days," Kai said, checking the date again.
"You'd better start preparing immediately," Nyxara said.
"It's seven days out," Kai said. "I've got time."
"Who are you bringing with you?" Elaine asked, already thinking practically.
Kai ran through the roster in his head.
"Eris and Enzo are still tied up in Myrath. Nero's not back yet. Seli's handling Belial's old domain. You and Ivy need to stay here and keep things running."
"I'll stay and watch over things too," Nyxara offered. "Don't worry about Horizoncrest."
"Thanks. Genuinely," Kai said. "Himari and Chloe are coming with me. And I should probably visit Ravessia first, given whatever she actually wants."
Once the immediate planning settled, Kai returned to the underground facility alone, looking up at the Genesis energy core still steadily stabilizing inside its containment.
He pressed a hand to his own chest, feeling the faint, familiar presence of his mother's core still resting there.
"Wish me luck, Mom," he said quietly.
Elsewhere in the mansion, Ivy, Chloe, and Himari had already begun the considerably more chaotic task of finding him something appropriately impressive to actually wear.
Kai and Chloe stepped through the mist gate two days before the Onmyō meeting, appearing at the edge of Demon Lord Ravessia's domain.
Someone was already waiting for them — precisely positioned, as though they'd known the exact moment and location the gate would open.
Kai eyed the vehicle waiting alongside her.
"Fancy ride."
Chloe made a noncommittal sound.
"What? I deserve this, don't I?" Kai said.
"In your dreams," Chloe said.
"Hey! What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing. Let's go."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Lord Kai," the attendant said, bowing properly. "Demon Lord Ravessia has been expecting you. This way, please."
She led them toward a modest castle visible above ground — clearly, Kai realized quickly, just a disguise for something considerably more elaborate hidden beneath it.
"This isn't the real castle, is it?" he said.
The attendant smiled.
"You're correct. Please step into the circle."
The spellwork carried them downward, smooth and steady like an elevator, and when they emerged, Kai found himself staring at something genuinely breathtaking — an entire dimension called Birth of a New Star, structured like the center of a universe itself, a beautiful landscape sprawling beneath an artificial sky.
A demon lord with genuine artistic vision. Didn't expect that.
What struck him even more were the citizens — humans, high goblins, high ogres, all living together without a trace of the discrimination he'd grown used to seeing elsewhere.
It was the first time since his reincarnation he'd witnessed that particular combination of races coexisting in open, easy harmony.
What could she possibly need my help with, running something this well already?
At the main castle, the attendant excused herself to fetch Ravessia — and returned dragging her mistress along by the wrist, the Demon Lord barely conscious, pillow still clutched in one hand, hair a genuine disaster.
"Here she is," Chloe said dryly.
"Really? She's sleepwalking?" Kai asked, disbelieving.
"My apologies," the attendant said. "She was awake all night wondering if you'd actually show up. Couldn't sleep at all."
The attendant finally managed to properly rouse her.
"My lady — Lord Kai is here."
Ravessia's eyes snapped open instantly.
"Where — where is he?"
"Uh. Hey," Kai said.
"Kai! You really came. Good morning."
"It's afternoon."
"Really? How long was I asleep?"
"Since this morning, my lady," the attendant supplied.
Ravessia studied Chloe with open curiosity.
"Is that the vampire I've heard about? She seems considerably more stable than the reports suggested."
"A pleasure to meet you, Demon Lord Ravessia," Chloe said formally. "My name is Chloe."
"The rampage, the killing — that was her curse and skill acting on their own," Kai explained. "I stabilized her."
"Ah. Fair enough."
The attendant, eyeing Ravessia's rumpled sleepwear with obvious discomfort, cleared her throat.
"My lady — perhaps you should change before continuing this conversation."
"Don't mind me," Kai said. "Enjoying the view, honestly."
"Pervert," Chloe muttered.
"See? Kai doesn't mind," Ravessia said.
"It's still not appropriate," the attendant insisted.
"Yeah, yeah."
Her aura flared briefly, and a proper outfit settled into place instantly.
"Alright. Let's discuss why I actually asked for your help. I'd like to speak with you privately."
"No problem," Kai said. "Chloe, you good waiting?"
"Sure," Chloe said, already being led off by the attendant for a tour.
Kai and Ravessia reconvened in a private meeting room, an ogre attendant pouring their drinks with quiet efficiency.
"Didn't realize ogres lived here," Kai said. "Wouldn't have guessed a Demon Lord would allow that."
"No?" Ravessia said. "I've got nothing against them. This territory originally belonged to high goblins, ogres, and a handful of humans who couldn't defend themselves properly. They offered me the whole territory in exchange for protection — long before I ever considered becoming a Demon Lord myself."
"That long ago?" Kai said, impressed.
"The favor I need," Ravessia continued, "concerns supply issues. One of my human merchants has been trading with Teorema, and that arrangement's falling apart."
"Because of the new king?"
"Precisely. This one's considerably sharper than his predecessor — figured out Teorema's been quietly supplying me without the old hero ever noticing."
"The one Nero killed?" Kai asked.
"That one," Ravessia confirmed.
"And speaking of Nero — my brother came to brag about his new evolution. Primordial Demon Emperor. Is that actually true?"
"Yes, though I genuinely have no idea what it means. Just went along with what I was told."
"Put simply," Ravessia said, "he's become something called a Devil King. Roughly equal to a Demon Lord, depending on which specific abilities he's actually gained."
"There's a whole additional tier I didn't know about," Kai said, faintly exhausted.
"The specific supply I need right now," Ravessia continued, "is that wine you apparently make."
"I made wine? I genuinely don't recall making any wine."
"My subordinate gave me a bottle. Excellent quality. Traced it back to a merchant from Roshan who received it from a merchant of mine named Carin. I'll send Carin to Horizoncrest directly, so he's not entirely dependent on Teorema going forward."
"No problem on my end," Kai said.
"One more thing," Ravessia said.
Without warning, she appeared directly in front of him, close enough that he could see every detail of her sharpened expression.
"Is it true you're trying to bring back the God of Destruction?"
"I have no idea what you mean," Kai said carefully.
"You know exactly what I mean," she said, her aura beginning to surface.
"The Chaos Dragon."
Kai let his own aura rise to meet hers.
"And if I am?"
She studied him for a long moment.
"She's your mother. Not my place to stop you. But are you certain it'll actually work? And what about the other two? Are you still going through with facing them?"
"I don't know if the restoration will work yet," Kai admitted. "Still have to try. And Vorath and Skorne — I've already made my decision on that."
"Do you truly believe revenge is the right path?" Ravessia asked directly.
Kai was silent for a long moment.
"No," he said, finally.
