The other side of Reincarnation
Part one hundred ninety three— Kai Zero
The stillness pressed against Kai from every direction at once.
No wind.
No sound.
No flicker of movement anywhere across the shattered remains of Thyatire.
Everyone he'd brought into this fight—everyone who had bled, fought, and evolved alongside him—stood frozen mid-breath, trapped inside a moment that technically no longer existed.
Only the stranger moved.
He looked exactly like Kai.
Not similar.
Exact.
The same eyes.
The same jaw.
The same features.
Even the particular way he carried himself while standing perfectly still.
And yet—
Something about him existed entirely outside anything Kai had ever encountered.
His presence made the collapsed sky surrounding them feel less like devastation and more like an unfinished sketch, waiting for its creator's next stroke.
"Who are you?" Kai asked.
His voice was steadier than he felt.
"You already know," the stranger replied.
"No. I don't."
"You will."
"Then tell me."
The stranger looked at him.
"I'm you."
Kai's expression tightened.
"Not the you standing here," the stranger continued. "Another you."
Kai said nothing.
Some cold certainty had already begun forming inside him.
"Another Haruto."
Kai's chest tightened.
"Haruto..."
"Yes."
Something almost gentle passed behind the stranger's ancient eyes.
"My name is Kai. But the worlds call me something else."
He paused.
The next words carried the weight of an entire existence.
"God of Creation."
He had this life too.
He was Haruto too.
Killed by Kenji, just like me.
Reincarnated, just like me.
And somewhere along the way... he became this.
Kai Zero told the story plainly.
There was no pride in his voice.
No anger.
No regret.
Only the detached calm of someone recounting events he'd long since stopped feeling anything about.
It had begun with his own War Genesis.
A war against the god who had ruled his timeline.
Kai Zero had discovered the truth—that the God of Creation in his timeline was the one who had ordered the deaths of his parents.
So he fought him.
And won.
That victory taught him something that changed everything.
Gods could be killed.
Their authority could be taken.
Absorbed.
Worn like a second skin.
So he kept going.
Primordial demons.
Primordial spirits.
Devil Kings.
Demon Lords.
An entire Onmyō Order.
All of them had once been part of his own world.
All of them were eventually consumed the same way.
Piece by piece.
Until nothing remained in his reality capable of standing against him.
He became the supreme ruler of everything that had once been his world.
And it still wasn't enough.
Kai Zero discovered other timelines.
Other Harutos.
Other Kais.
Countless versions of the same boy, scattered across countless dimensions and parallel reflections.
And for the first time, he became afraid.
Not temporarily.
Not irrationally.
Genuinely afraid.
Because somewhere among those countless possibilities, one of them might eventually reach what he had.
One might come for the throne he'd built from murdered gods.
So he hunted them.
Every version.
Every timeline.
Every multiverse.
Every parallel world.
Every dimension.
He found Harutos before they could even reincarnate.
And erased them.
He rewrote the memories of anyone who might have carried some trace of them forward.
Entire histories were quietly unmade.
Every God of Creation he found across the timelines was hunted down.
And consumed.
He wanted to be the only one.
Kai's stomach twisted.
The only Haruto.
The only Kai.
The only god left standing anywhere.
"And me," Kai said quietly.
"You were meant to be next," Kai Zero replied.
He spoke as though discussing an ordinary event.
"I killed the god who ruled this reality. Took his authority."
His eyes settled on Kai.
"And then I found you."
"But you couldn't kill me."
"No."
For the first time, something flickered across Kai Zero's ancient composure.
Not quite frustration.
But close.
"No matter what I attempted, I couldn't erase you."
He paused.
"Couldn't remove you from existence."
Another pause.
"Couldn't rewrite what you were."
"Why?"
Kai Zero's gaze drifted briefly toward something Kai couldn't see.
"Null-Subconsciousness."
Kai's eyes widened slightly.
"A consciousness almost none of my other selves ever carried."
Kai Zero looked back at him.
"Every time I reached for you, it adapted."
His expression remained calm.
"Resisted."
"Found another way to keep you intact."
Kai stared at him.
"I realized eventually that killing you inside my construction wouldn't actually end you."
Kai Zero's voice became quieter.
"It would only release you from it."
