The other side of Reincarnation

Part one hundred fifty four — The Record

  • Next Chapter

One quiet afternoon, settling in for a rare nap, Kai found himself circling a thought that had been sitting unexamined since he'd woken from the cocoon.

I never actually found out what happened to everyone else that whole week I was unconscious.

"Do you have a record of that?" he asked, half-joking. "The whole week?"

"I have a full record," Null-Subconsciousness confirmed.

 "Wait—really? Can you show me?"

"I can show you exactly what happened," it said. "Close your eyes."

 He did.

And the week unfolded before him properly for the first time.

Eris waking blind and terrified before regaining her sight.

 Ace's immediate demands for food.

 The household's chaotic, joyful reunion.

 Elaine rebuilding the town.

The preparations for the Demon Lord meeting.

 Some moments were genuinely funny.

 Others were warm.

For the first time, Kai saw everything he'd missed while he had been trapped inside the cocoon.

 Then—

 Abruptly—

 The record simply stopped.

"That's all of it?" Kai asked, something not quite satisfied in his voice.

"That is all of it," Null-Subconsciousness said.

"Why'd it end so suddenly, though? Feels like there's a gap."

"Continuing the record is not recommended."

That's not a no.

That's a very careful non-answer.

"Show me anyway," Kai said, quiet but firm.

 Null-Subconsciousness remained silent.

 A moment longer than usual.

Something that, from it, counted as genuine reluctance.

 Then, finally—

 Deliberately—

 It resumed.

     * * *

What followed hit him considerably harder than anything the record had shown him so far.

A True Dragon descending over Horizoncrest while he lay vulnerable inside the cocoon.

Enzo and Ivy closing the distance instantly, attacking without hesitation.

 Absolute Void.

 The entire town freezing.

Everyone he loved caught helpless inside a reality bent entirely to one being's own will.

Kai watched Vorath reach for the cocoon.

 Watched Ivy's barrier fail.

Then watched the Null Barrier resist.

 And finally—

 Break under Vorath's patient effort.

Nyxara appeared behind him at the last possible instant, blade pressed against his throat, fury absolute.

 Then came the conversation.

 The truth.

 Laid bare.

 His own mother.

 The Chaos Dragon.

Sister to the two True Dragons who had hunted him his whole life.

Killed by her own brothers out of naked, ancient jealousy.

 The golden seed.

Half her core, sealed away with No.8.

 The other half—

 Hidden inside himself.

The actual reason they'd wanted him dead from the very beginning.

My mother was their sister.

My mother was stronger than both of them.

They killed her for it.

And then came for me because I'm carrying what's left of what they actually wanted all along.

He understood, watching further, exactly why his father had so rarely been home.

 Not distance.

 Not neglect.

But a man constantly fighting in the demon realm, defending his family from threats Kai had never once properly understood.

He wasn't absent because he didn't care.

He was absent because he was protecting us—the only way he actually could.

The record continued into something considerably harder to watch.

Vorath casually, effortlessly defeating both Ivy and Enzo without expending any real effort at all.

A demonstration of exactly how far Kai's own strength still had to grow before either True Dragon became a fight he could actually survive.

 And then—

 Finally—

 The last piece.

 Nyxara's question, sharp and sudden.

And Vorath's answer, offered almost carelessly on his way out the door.

War Genesis.

They wanted the golden seed to restart something called War Genesis.

 The record ended there.

 Cutting to black.

     * * *

 Kai opened his eyes slowly.

The weight of everything he'd just learned settled into him properly for the first time.

"How were you even able to record all that?" he asked quietly. "He activated Absolute Void. Shouldn't that have frozen you too?"

"That is a complex explanation," Null-Subconsciousness said.

 "Never mind."

Kai stopped it before it could actually begin one.

 "Doesn't matter right now."

His eyes had already begun glowing faintly.

Something had settled into his expression that hadn't been there a moment earlier.

 Calm.

 Still.

 Entirely, absolutely certain.

 He smiled.

"Now's as good a time as any," he said quietly, his voice final. "I think it's time I killed those two bastards."

     * * *

Kai gathered the full leadership circle that same evening.

The weight of everything he'd just learned settled over him with a stillness that felt, to everyone watching, considerably more unsettling than open rage would have been.

"I know now," he said quietly. "Everything. What happened while I was in the cocoon. What Vorath and Skorne actually did to my mother, and why."

Nyxara, seated nearby, went very still.

 "You saw the record."

"I asked Null-Subconsciousness to show me everything," Kai said. "It tried to stop at a certain point. I insisted."

"You would," Nyxara said, something almost fond beneath her obvious concern.

 He told them properly then.

 The golden seed.

Half of it sealed with No.8 during the fight that had cost his mother her life.

The other half hidden inside himself the entire time without his knowledge.

 War Genesis.

Whatever that actually meant, waiting somewhere behind two ancient dragons' shared ambition.

Enzo's expression darkened considerably as the account unfolded.

"Jealousy," he said flatly. "They killed a sister stronger than either of them, purely out of jealousy, and dressed it up as some higher purpose."

"That's what Vorath admitted to Nyxara directly," Kai confirmed.

"And Vorath came here," Ivy said, something cold entering her composed voice, "while you were vulnerable. Defeated Enzo and me without visible effort."

"I saw that too," Kai said. "I understand now exactly how far behind them I still am."

"So what happens now?" Eris asked quietly, already dreading whatever answer was coming.

 "I'm not rushing at them."

Something in the room eased slightly at that.

"I know better than that by now. But I'm done pretending this is a wound I can leave unaddressed indefinitely. I have a real target now. Two of them, actually."

 His eyes hardened.

"And I intend to actually close the gap between what I am now and what it'll take to face them properly."

"We'll help however that requires," Elaine said immediately, without hesitation.

 "I know," Kai said.

 He paused.

"That's—that's actually the whole reason I can even consider this at all. I'm not doing it alone."

Nyxara studied him for a long moment, something weighing behind her usual composure.

"There's more you should know, eventually. About War Genesis specifically. I don't fully understand it myself yet—Vorath didn't finish explaining before I stopped him. But I intend to find out."

 "Together," Kai said.

 "Together," she agreed.

The room settled into something quieter after that.

 Not resolved.

 Not fully at peace.

 But steady.

The particular calm that came from a family that had already survived considerably worse than uncertainty about the future.

Whatever War Genesis actually is.

Whatever it takes to actually face Vorath and Skorne properly.

I've got people who aren't going to let me walk into it alone.

That has to count for something.

I think it counts for almost everything, actually.
