Chapter 27: First Day as an Adventurer

Most Rank G Mission involved gathering medicinal herbs from the surrounding area.

Rank F Mission began to include monster extermination missions as well.

Considering that Qiu Nuoya did not even own any equipment yet, taking on monsters was completely out of the question.

Even a slime that supposedly the weakest monster would still be too much for him in his current state.

"Um... would these be good choices?"

Although they were all herb gathering mission, there were many different kinds of medicinal plants.

Some were easy to find, while others were much rarer.

The rewards varied depending on the type.

The mission Qiu Nuoya selected were among the lowest paying ones, the kind of simple work that almost anyone could complete.

"That seems like a reasonable place to start," Viktor said with a nod.

"Huh? Seriously?" Igor said. "If you’re going anyway, you should just accept these too."

He pointed toward a high paying Rank G herb gathering mission and a slime extermination mission.

"But... I’m just a beginner," Qiu Nuoya said. "There’s no way I can handle that many missions at once."

"No, no. All of these can be completed in the same area. If you keep accepting them separately, that’s just inefficient."

"But I heard there’s a penalty if you fail to complete an accepted mission. If I don’t finish them, I’ll have to pay a fine. Since I’m completely broke, I can’t afford to take that kind of risk."

Being steady and reliable was the best approach.

Even if the penalty for failing a low rank mission was only a small fine, Qiu Nuoya’s livelihood depended on the little money he had.

"But there won’t be a problem if you complete them all, right?" Igor said with a grin. "What do you think the two of us are here for?"

"I know both of you are high rank adventurers," Qiu Nuoya replied. "But if someone else completes the mission I accepted, that would be cheating!"

He answered so matter-of-factly that Igor could only smile wryly. "You’re really too serious."

"Tch. He’s got babysitters with him again. How annoying."

A deliberately loud click of the tongue came from behind them.

When Qiu Nuoya turned around, he saw Warren, the young swordsman who had taken the exam with him yesterday, glaring at him with obvious irritation.

Well, It seemed this guy Warren really did dislike him.

"Stop taking forever to choose. You’re in the way."

"Ah, sorry."

Warren clicked his tongue once more before pulling the slime extermination mission from the board and striding over to the reception counter.

"He’s got quite the attitude," Igor said with a chuckle. "I don’t really mind people like that, though."

"If someone becomes too confident in their own abilities, they’ll shorten their own life," Viktor said seriously. "Nuoya, whatever you do, don’t push yourself too hard."

Qiu Nuoya nodded.

He decided to stick with the missions he had originally chosen.

All right, it’s time for my very first job.

I would give it my best.

"Excuse me, miss. I’d like to register these missions, please!"

Qiu Nuoya held out the mission forms, while standing on his tiptoes to reach the tall reception counter.

The receptionist smiled warmly and said, "Of course. Thank you."

She quickly completed the registration.

Just like that, Qiu Nuoya had officially accepted his first adventurer mission.

Now it was time to head out.

The medicinal herbs for Qiu Nuoya’s mission could be found on the western grasslands outside the city gates.

Or rather, this was the very place where he had been attacked by slimes before.

Sure enough, Warren who had accepted his mission earlier was already there.

The young swordsman was swinging his blade through the tall grass as he searched the area.

"It looks like we’d only get in his way if we stay nearby. Let’s move a little farther over."

After putting some distance between themselves and Warren, Qiu Nuoya checked the mission forms once more.

One of the requested herbs was Ether Leaf, it’s a tall medicinal plant.

The other was Sunrise Flower, which bloomed with bright yellow flowers.

Only the leaves of Ether Leaf were needed, so whenever he found one, he cut off the leaves on the spot and bundled them together.

Sunrise Flower, on the other hand, was valued for its roots.

He had to carefully dig up the entire plant before brushing the dirt from the roots.

The bright yellow flowers made Sunrise Flower very easy to spot.

Although the flowers themselves were not required for the mission, Viktor had told him that they were delicious when stir fried.

Since they would otherwise go to waste, Qiu Nuoya decided to collect the flowers as well.

Meanwhile, Igor had apparently decided to spend the day taking a nap.

He was already lying comfortably in the grass nearby.

Well, it really was the perfect place for a picnic.

That was, of course, if not for all the slimes bouncing around everywhere.

"Aren’t there way too many slimes?"

"That’s exactly why there’s an extermination mission," Viktor replied. "They don’t cause much trouble as long as you don’t attack them first, but if their numbers grow too large, they’ll start destroying the crops."

The slimes slowly wandered through the grassland and quietly feeding on the grass.

Each individual moved at a leisurely pace, but there were so many of them that, if left alone, they would eventually eat every medicinal herb in the area.

If he was careless, they might even gobble up the Sunrise Flowers he had already collected.

As a result, Qiu Nuoya found himself gathering herbs while constantly avoiding the wandering slimes.

"Hah. You’re actually running away from slimes? That’s pathetic."

Warren’s mocking voice drifted over from nearby.

Qiu Nuoya did not even need to look to know who had spoken.

It was obviously Warren.

They had deliberately moved away from him in order to gather herbs in peace, so why had he come over here?
