The Ocean's Little Tyrant: A Mermaid Baby Conquers the 80s
Chapter 255: Riding the Little Car Home
’What kind of family *is* this?’
Brother Mao’s expression instantly turned fawning.
"If I may ask, what does your family do for a living?"
These were big spenders. They might be able to work together again in the future, so he had to butter them up a bit.
It was a little shameless, but there was no shame in sucking up for money.
Yun Xiaowu rubbed his thumb under his nose. "You’ve asked the right person! We’re a family of fishermen!"
"What?"
Brother Mao and his guys were dumbfounded. After a moment, realization seemed to dawn on his face.
"I get it! Your family must have a big boat, then. You guys are big shots!"
Yun Jiao said, "We’ll have a big boat eventually, but not yet."
Brother Mao was speechless.
’No, wait. Have I just not kept up with the times?’ He was a local, born and raised. And while his family weren’t fishermen, there were plenty of them around, so he knew a fair bit about their lives.
Other than the families with large boats, what kind of fishermen were this wealthy? Their kids were carrying around so much money, and their parents weren’t even worried.
Just as he was trying to figure it out, several stomachs started to growl.
There happened to be a shop selling baozi up ahead, so Yun Jiao led them over to buy some baozi and steamed buns.
The little girl rode her little tricycle at the front, followed by a large group of people who looked just like bodyguards.
Even passing dogs had to stop and stare.
She bought two yuan worth of steamed buns and one yuan worth of baozi for Brother Mao and his guys, which moved them to tears.
"Little Yun Jiao, don’t you worry. From now on, your brothers are my brothers. I, Brother Mao, will make sure no one dares to hurt them anywhere near that school!"
Yun Xiaowu retorted indignantly, "We can protect ourselves."
’He’s really underestimating us brothers.’
At school, even Yang Dazhuang, who used to strut around like he owned the place, didn’t dare to bully them anymore.
Yun Jiao bought some food for her brothers as well. After saying goodbye to Brother Mao and his crew, she happily led her brothers home.
"Jiaojiao, this little tricycle of yours is so cool. Where’d you buy it?"
Yun Jiao answered, "In the county town."
"Brother, do you want to try it?"
"Yeah!"
They were all siblings, after all, so Yun Xiaowu didn’t stand on ceremony. The moment his little sister got off, he hopped on.
However, while the little tricycle was a bit big for Yun Jiao, it was a bit small for Yun Xiaowu.
But that didn’t stop him from riding it at top speed.
It was a three-wheeler, so there was no fear of falling over even when going fast.
After doing a lap, Yun Xiaowu was left wanting more.
"This thing is awesome. It’d be perfect if it were a little bigger."
Yun Xiaoqi pushed him aside. "Move, Fifth Brother. It’s my turn."
Yun Xiao Ba and Yun Xiaojiu were also lined up and waiting.
Yun Jiao wasn’t in a hurry. She followed slowly behind, watching as each of her brothers zipped off on the tricycle for a good distance before circling back.
They passed the tricycle down the line like a relay baton.
Yun Jiao rode the last stretch herself.
When they reached the village, every kid who saw her little tricycle started shouting and chasing after it.
"Yun Xiaowu! Yun Xiaowu! Is that tricycle yours?"
Yun Xiaowu puffed out his chest, answering proudly and loudly, "Of course it is! It’s my little sister’s."
"Whoa..."
The kids were absolutely sick with envy.
They had seen adult bikes before, but never one made for a kid!
As a result, everyone in Bailong Village, adult and child alike, came to see the novelty.
"My goodness, kids have their own special vehicles now?"
"That’s Yun Linhai’s family. Aren’t they spoiling Yun Jiao a bit too much? They even bought a special tricycle just for her."
Many people felt both bitter and jealous; they were adults, and they didn’t even have their own bicycles.
"Yun Jiao, where did you buy this little tricycle? How much was it?"
Yun Jiao replied simply, "My godfather bought it."
Everyone recalled the scene of him arriving on a yacht to celebrate her birthday, and they all understood immediately.
"Why doesn’t our family have that kind of luck?"
Why couldn’t they know a rich and powerful person like that?
"Dad, Mom, we’re home!"
Yun Jiao pedaled her little tricycle home at top speed, shouting at the top of her little lungs.
Shen Yunlian was at home mending fishing nets. Yun Linhai and Yun Linhe weren’t home; they had gone out to collect the fish traps.
"Jiaojiao."
As soon as Shen Yunlian came out, Yun Jiao rode her little tricycle in a circle around her.
"Mom, look! Isn’t my little tricycle pretty?"
Shen Yunlian beamed. "It is. Of course, it’s pretty."
’The little tricycle is actually quite cute.’
"Why did you come back with your brothers?"
Shen Yunlian’s eyes narrowed as she stared at Yun Xiaowu and his brothers. This was a danger signal, and it instantly made the boys’ scalps tingle with fear.
Don’t be fooled by Shen Yunlian’s usual gentle demeanor at home; when she got angry, she was more terrifying than a big man like Yun Linhai.
"What happened to you lot? Did you get in a fight?"
The Yun Xiaowu brothers shook their heads frantically. "No, we didn’t! Mom, listen to us."
Shen Yunlian picked up a thin bamboo switch from somewhere and held it in her hand, a smile on her face.
"Alright. Explain."
Cold sweat instantly broke out on Yun Xiaowu and his brothers.
"We were protecting Jiaojiao!"
"Jiaojiao? What happened?"
Yun Jiao said, "Don’t be mad, Mom. I went to my brothers’ school to find them."
Yun Xiaoqi quickly explained the whole story from beginning to end.
They only breathed a sigh of relief when they saw Shen Yunlian put the bamboo switch down.
’That was close. We almost got a beating.’
"Next time, don’t be so impulsive. Assess the situation first before you act."
"Jiaojiao, did you ride this thing all the way from your master’s place? Do your feet hurt? Are you hungry?"
Yun Jiao let out a burp, patting her still-full little tummy with an innocent look on her face.
"Not hungry."
Shen Yunlian took her small backpack, and upon opening it, found it full of all kinds of little snacks, just as she’d expected.
Needless to say, the little rascal had been eating the whole way.
She gently poked Yun Jiao on the forehead.
"You ate so many snacks. I’m confiscating these."
Yun Jiao obediently admitted her mistake, but it was all an act.
’I’ll get those snacks back!’
When Yun Linhai returned, Yun Jiao rushed over to him.
"Dad! Uncle!"
The little one was immediately swept up into an embrace.
"Jiaojiao’s back! You caused quite a stir today, didn’t you? Your dad and I heard people talking about you before we even got home. They said your godfather bought you a little tricycle?"
Yun Jiao pointed at the little tricycle that Brother Nine was riding.
"That one. I bought it myself."
The reason she’d said it was her godfather was because, despite her young age, she had learned from her parents’ words and actions the importance of keeping a low profile and not flaunting her wealth.
There was a big difference between her godfather buying it and her buying it herself.
Everyone knew her godfather’s family was rich. For someone that wealthy to buy a child’s tricycle, nobody would think anything of it.
But if they knew Yun Jiao had bought it with her own money, they would have plenty to say.
First, people with ill intentions would certainly covet her money, and the trouble around her would increase.
Second, many people would definitely approach her dad and mom to criticize them, or gossip behind their backs. Giving a child so much money—what an irresponsible way to manage a household!
