Chapter 192: Arrested for Causing Trouble

Yun Jiao led them over to see what the commotion was about. When they got closer, they were in for a shock.

The Zhou Family had brought quite a few people with them.

"Give us our money back! If you don’t return the bride price today, we’ll smash everything in your house!"

Cai Jinhua blocked the doorway. "You dare! I’m not one to be trifled with. What, you think you can just beat people up? I’m telling you, if you lay a hand on me, I’ll go straight to the police station and report you!"

"You shameless bitch! The girl is dead, and you still want to pocket our family’s bride price? Do you really think we’re that easy to bully? Paying your debts is the law of the land. Even if you go to the police, we’re the ones in the right."

With that, the woman from the Zhou family rushed forward and grabbed Cai Jinhua’s hair.

The two women started brawling right there in the doorway.

Cai Jinhua wailed and cried, "Is there no justice in this world? You’ve come all the way to our village just to bully us! You’re the ones who drove my daughter to her death! How can you have the gall to ask for that two hundred yuan back? That was the money you paid for her life!"

"Bah! What does your daughter’s death have to do with us? If anyone drove her to it, it was her own heartless family! You old hag, if you don’t give back the money today, we’ll be back to raise hell at your house every single day! I’ll fucking #@$%&...!"

Wang Yi and Sun Yaoqin stared wide-eyed at the scene unfolding before them.

’They’re actually fighting... And... and the language is so foul.’

"Wh-what is going on? Is no one going to stop them?"

There were plenty of onlookers, but very few stepped in to break up the fight.

It wasn’t until the village chief arrived and called for help that people finally managed to separate the two brawling women.

The village chief seriously wanted to kick Cai Jinhua’s entire family out of the village. ’They never let up for a single day,’ he thought. ’They’re ruining our village’s reputation!’

The argument raged on. The village chief did his best to mediate, but to no avail.

No matter what he said, Cai Jinhua’s family simply refused to hand over the money.

Meanwhile, Yun Jiao was explaining the gist of the situation to the other two.

Yun Chen Nan, having just returned, was completely in the dark. He, too, was shocked by what Yun Jiao told them.

"What? A ghost marriage?!"

Wang Yi’s eyes went wide.

He’d never witnessed such a thing himself, but ’the thought of making a girl marry a dead man is horrifying!’

"How could they do that? It’s completely immoral."

Sun Yaoqin was still very young, and the whole situation left her completely baffled.

An idea sparked in Wang Yi’s mind. "You guys stay here and watch. I’m going to get my dad."

With that, Wang Yi took off running.

’I have to go ask if this is against the law,’ he thought.

By the time Wang Jianlin arrived with his group, the situation had escalated: Cai Jinhua was now dragging out her third daughter, Yun Pan Di.

Only fifteen years old, Yun Pan Di was crying her eyes out, a truly pitiful sight.

"I don’t have the money. That damned girl Laidi is gone, but I have other daughters. Since she’s just marrying your dead son anyway, if you’re not picky, you can just take my third daughter here."

The people from the Zhou Family sized up the miserably weeping Yun Pan Di.

’This could work,’ they thought.

The village chief shouted sternly, "What do you think you’re doing? Don’t you know this is illegal? Are you even human? That’s your own daughter!"

Cai Jinhua was completely shameless, like a dead pig that doesn’t fear boiling water. "Village Chief, if you feel so sorry for my Pandi, then why don’t you pay back the two hundred yuan for us?"

"You... you people..."

The village chief’s face turned livid, his breathing growing ragged. It was obvious he was beyond furious.

After a quick discussion amongst themselves, the Zhou Family agreed to the proposal.

’She’s a little young, sure,’ they thought, ’but it’s for our third son. As long as the ghost marriage can proceed, it’ll do.’

Just as the Zhou Family was about to grab Yun Pan Di, Wang Jianlin walked over, his face grim.

"Wait."

The members of the Zhou Family looked at Wang Jianlin and his group, their faces etched with impatience.

"Who the hell are you? This is a private matter between our two families. I’d advise you to mind your own business."

The village chief recognized Wang Jianlin at a glance, as he had visited before. Thinking about the man’s identity and this absolute mess of a situation, the chief’s vision swam.

’It’s over,’ he despaired. ’Our village’s reputation is completely ruined!’

Wang Jianlin’s secretary stepped forward. "Ghost marriages and arranged marriages are both illegal. Are you aware of this?"

By now, the Zhou Family was thoroughly irritated and impatient. Bolstered by their numbers, they started shouting that yes, they were arranging a ghost marriage, and what was anyone going to do about it!

This actually made Wang Jianlin laugh out of exasperation.

He put a hand on his secretary’s arm. "Don’t be rash."

Then he gave him a meaningful look.

The secretary nodded, slipped out of the crowd, and headed back to Yun Jiao’s house to drive to the police station.

Wang Jili called the village chief over and instructed in a low voice, "Village Chief, I need you to find a way to stall them for a while."

The Zhou Family had brought quite a few men with them. He’d done a quick count and noticed they were carrying weapons.

Although they were just clubs, hoes, and the like.

But if a fight broke out now, someone would surely get hurt.

Wang Jili didn’t want the villagers of Bailong Village to clash with the Zhou Family, so he decided to bide his time and sent his secretary to the police station for reinforcements.

The village chief nodded, then gathered a few able-bodied men from the village and began to run interference with the Zhou Family.

He held onto Pandi to keep the Zhou Family from taking her, shouting at both sides.

"Pandi is just a child! How can you be so cruel? You heartless bastards, you’re all a bunch of animals..."

Holding Pandi with one hand, he pointed at the adults of Cai Jinhua’s family with the other and continued to curse them out.

The insults made Yun Dan fly into a rage, and he tried to start a fight, only to be held back by the burly villagers, who snuck in a few jabs of their own.

When Yun Dan’s parents saw their son getting hit, they started making a scene as well.

The scene descended into chaos.

The Zhou Family shouted, "You lot can have your drama, we’re taking the girl."

The village chief retorted, "You already drove Laidi to her death! Are you trying to do the same to Pandi?"

A man from the Zhou Family shot back, "That’s got nothing to do with us. Today, we’re either taking the girl or getting our money back. One or the other."

Cai Jinhua staunchly refused to give them any money, instead giving the crying Pandi a shove in their direction.

The village chief called for his men to grab Pandi back.

Just as the conflict was escalating and a full-blown brawl was about to erupt, Wang Jianlin’s secretary returned with police officers from the station.

"What’s going on here? What do you think you’re all doing!"

The moment they saw the police, the arrogant members of the Zhou Family became as meek as lambs. Cai Jinhua and her lot even tried to grab their son and scurry back into the house.

"Stop right there."

"Are you the ones arranging a ghost marriage?"

An older police officer looked at the Zhou Family. "You people have some real nerve. Do you have any idea that this is illegal?"

’Not long ago, people were getting arrested just for promoting feudal superstitions,’ he thought. ’And now someone’s already trying to arrange a ghost marriage.’

"N-No, it’s not that."

A member of the Zhou Family gave a sheepish grin. "It’s not a ghost marriage. We’re just finding a wife for our youngest son."

As they spoke, they pushed their youngest son forward.

"No ghost marriage."

Wang Jianlin walked over. "Arrest them all. Take them back for questioning."

"Yes, Magistrate."

Hearing the police officer call Wang Jianlin "Magistrate," the entire crowd was dumbfounded.

Some of them recalled the things they had shouted earlier, and their hearts sank.

’We’re doomed!’

"And them," Wang Jianlin added, pointing to Cai Jinhua’s family. "Forced marriage is also illegal now. It doesn’t matter if you’re the parents."

Cai Jinhua and Yun Dan frantically shook their heads. "No, no! We’re calling off the marriage! We weren’t arranging a ghost marriage! It wasn’t a forced marriage!"

But no matter what they said, they were all taking a trip to the police station.
