The Ocean's Little Tyrant: A Mermaid Baby Conquers the 80s
Chapter 175: Stay Far Away From Her
"I don’t give a damn what kind of relative you are! Steal my money, and we’re no longer family!"
Yun Jiao, munching on melon seeds, wanted to give Yun Dafu a big thumbs-up.
The man might have liked to show off his wealth a bit, but his family had earned that money honestly, not by stealing or robbing. So why should they have to get their money stolen, get beaten up, and then have the culprits’ family show up, kneel, and expect them to just drop the matter of the three thousand yuan and offer forgiveness with a few empty words?
Someone more concerned with saving face might have caved after a bout of moral blackmail from Granny Yuan and not made such a scene.
But Yun Dafu was a man who cared about face, too—specifically, the kind of face that came from having people look at him with envy.
To steal his money and then try to guilt-trip him? Fat chance.
Yun Dafu’s wife pointed at Granny Yuan and let loose a torrent of curses.
"You damn, muddle-headed old hag! If you’ve got the guts to plead for them, then you pay back the three thousand yuan! If you can’t manage that, then stop being such a busybody and mind your own business.
Pah! What bullshit ’elder’ are you to my family? We’re barely related! You really think that old face of yours gives you the right to tell us what to do? You’d better get the hell away from here. My family is not in a good mood right now, so don’t you dare push me into slapping you!"
At the side, his wife’s younger sister and her family looked displeased. "Sis, are you really not going to help get my son out? You’re my own sister! How can you just stand by and watch your own nephew suffer?
You know he’s the only male heir in our Zhang family; he’s precious! He was about to have a marriage arranged. How is he supposed to find a wife now? If you keep acting like this, I’m going to go have a good, long talk with our mother about you..."
"Talk, my ass, you bastard!"
Without any warning, Yun Dafu’s wife slapped her own sister across the face.
"I have put up with you for far too long! Are you people beggars, coming to our house every single day to borrow money? And when you can’t borrow it, you steal it! You dare steal from my family and then expect me to forgive your son? I’m telling you, you can dream on!"
That slap was like a signal. The two sides immediately started brawling.
Curses and cries erupted into a chaotic mess.
"Oh my, they’ve started fighting."
"Quick, go break it up."
Arguing was one thing, but a physical fight could lead to someone getting killed, which would be terrible for the village’s reputation.
So, those who felt they should intervene went to break up the fight.
Yun Jiao hugged her two dogs and dodged to the side, clearing a path for the adults.
Yun Dafu’s home descended into chaos. Granny Yuan, still on the ground, got her foot trampled by the brawling families in the confusion.
She yelped in pain.
Yun Jiao continued to munch on her melon seeds, a smile playing on her lips.
’Heh heh... I can’t help but feel a little schadenfreude.’
Once everyone was pulled apart, Granny Yuan limped over to the village chief, crying and complaining.
The village chief said impatiently, "This is another family’s business. Why are you meddling? You didn’t even see who stepped on you, so who am I supposed to hold responsible?"
Granny Yuan felt wronged. "I was just trying to do what’s best for everyone. We’re all family here. Wouldn’t it be better if everyone just took a step back? Why be so petty about it?"
The chief’s head throbbed. "What, was it *your* money that got stolen? No? Then what right do you have to forgive someone on Dafu’s behalf? You’re completely muddle-headed. Where’s her son? Come and get your mother! Stop her from causing trouble here."
Granny Yuan’s son didn’t appear, but her daughter-in-law did, stepping forward reluctantly.
"Mother, can you please stop causing trouble for us everywhere?"
Granny Yuan, not feeling she had done anything wrong, said righteously, "I’m doing a good deed. Why can’t any of you understand?"
Yun Jiao grimaced.
She lowered her head to the little chubby dog in her arms and whispered a warning, "See her? If you ever run into her, stay far, far away."
’What if her craziness is contagious?’
The two little dogs: WOOF?
Granny Yuan tried to say more, but her daughter-in-law impatiently dragged her away.
For the moment, the incident at Yun Dafu’s house was over. His wife’s sister and her family left in disgrace.
"Jiaojiao, I knew I’d find you here."
Yun Linhe walked over, patting Yun Jiao’s head with his hand, which had started to heal.
’Her hair is a mess.’
’But his Jiaojiao looked cute even with messy hair.’
Normally, he would have been able to pick Yun Jiao up.
But his arm still ached, so he couldn’t manage it now.
Yun Jiao felt a twinge of guilt and looked up at her uncle with wide, innocent eyes.
"What brings you here, Uncle?"
Yun Linhe huffed. "I was looking for you. I didn’t find you, but I did find your ducks. You left them with Cat Boss again, didn’t you."
’This little girl really judges by looks.’
When the chickens, ducks, and geese were little and fluffy, with soft, delicate chirps, she couldn’t get enough of them.
But now? They had molted, transforming from fluffy little darlings into rather ugly, plump birds, and Yun Jiao’s disdain was plain to see.
While she still took them out to forage, she now mostly just tossed them into the fields or onto the tidal flats to find their own food, or had Cat Boss watch over them.
She was, however, still quite fond of the two rabbits.
Because they were well-cared-for, their fur was always clean—the black one a deep black, the white one a pure white.
Still, they weren’t as adorable as when they were babies.
Yun Jiao said, "I saw everyone coming over here, so I just followed along."
’Absolutely not admitting that I came for the drama.’
Yun Linhe glanced toward the house. "They started fighting?"
Yun Jiao immediately perked up and began chattering away, telling him everything she had just seen.
Yun Linhe said, "From now on, stay far away from Granny Yuan. She’s not all there."
Clearly, Yun Linhe also had no fondness for the old woman who was always meddling in other people’s family matters.
Yun Jiao nodded earnestly. "That’s what I thought, too."
They rounded a corner and finally relieved Cat Boss of his duties, herding the chickens, ducks, and geese back home.
On the way, Yun Jiao stopped by their family’s vegetable garden to pick some leaves to take back for the rabbits.
When they got home, Granny Yun brought out the raw marinated seafood she had prepared for Yun Jiao the night before.
They hadn’t used all the ice from the day before, so Granny Yun had carefully saved it to keep Yun Jiao’s raw marinated seafood chilled.
After marinating overnight, the seafood was perfectly seasoned.
"Hsss... Jiaojiao, are you really going to eat that?"
Clearly, the family now knew about her resistance to poison, but they still felt a shiver of fear looking at the jellyfish.
Yun Jiao sat down on a small stool, her heart filled with glee. This whole big basin was all hers.
"It’s delicious."
There was another basin of raw marinated seafood on the table, filled with sea snails, shrimp, and crabs.
Now that the family wasn’t so short on money and had even managed to build up some savings, they were less reluctant to indulge when it came to food.
Each time they returned from a fishing trip, they were willing to set aside some of the better parts of the catch for themselves.
In the past, the shrimp, crabs, and any decent-sized sea snails would have certainly been sold for cash.
Yun Jiao hugged her basin and began to eat with noisy slurps.
The marinated jellyfish was perfectly seasoned. It was crisp, refreshing, and springy, with a fresh, sweet flavor.
To her, the poisonous tentacles were just like noodles.
The entire family stared at her nervously.
"How does it feel?"
Yun Jiao replied, "Delicious!"
’Alright, it seems she’s really okay.’
"Grandma, you guys should eat the jellyfish salad."
The cold-tossed jellyfish salad was actually quite similar to the raw marinated version.
The naturally bland jellyfish, once prepared, was coated in a savory dressing. It was crisp and incredibly refreshing.
It really was delicious.
