The NO.1 Food Stall in the Wasteland
Chapter 268: Everyone is a Professional
Xue Can summoned his Fire Needle. "You shouldn’t have touched her. You deserve to die."
"Wait." Boss Jin raised a hand. "Mr. Xue, we can talk. I’m sure you approached her for the mysterious supplier, too. I can cooperate with you, fake my death, and help you win her trust!"
"Your Superpower Level is high, Mr. Xue, but that doesn’t mean you know how to do business. I’m willing to follow your lead, offer up all my assets, and help you make the Gale Mercenary Corps bigger and stronger—the top Mercenary Corps in the Imperial City, no, in all four survival bases! All I ask is that you spare my life!"
Boss Jin’s posture couldn’t have been more subservient. He had no choice. Xue Can’s Superpower Level was higher than the mercenaries he’d hired. If Xue Can attacked, he was a dead man for sure.
Xue Can didn’t answer. He simply sent the Fire Needle straight into Boss Jin’s brow and chest.
The man’s eyes shot wide open. He spat out a mouthful of blood and collapsed to the ground like a heap of rotten meat.
The assistant, trembling, could only glare furiously at Xue Can, not daring to speak his anger.
Jin San arrived late. By the time he dragged his injured arm inside, he found Boss Jin already dead.
The food in Jin San’s hands suddenly fell to the floor. He let out a mournful cry, "Big Brother!"
"Xue Can, you actually killed my big brother! I’ll make you pay with your life."
It wasn’t as if Jin San and Boss Jin were particularly close, but after he was kicked out of the Gale Mercenary Corps, his big brother was the only one willing to take him in. Plus, he had been living quite well recently. He did have some genuine affection for Boss Jin.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have stuck by Boss Jin’s side while he was being hunted.
Now, with Boss Jin brutally killed, the string of reason in Jin San’s mind instantly snapped. With a roar, he charged at Xue Can.
This time, Xue Can showed no mercy, ending Jin San’s life in a single move.
"Clean up the rest of them, too." Xue Can turned and instructed Mo Bei in a low voice.
The two mercenaries Boss Jin had hired immediately raised their hands. "Mr. Xue, we were just hired guns."
When Xue Can had made his move just now, they hadn’t even flinched. You could say they were being quite cooperative. ’You’ve already killed our employer, so you can’t kill us too.’
Xue Can didn’t recognize these two mercenaries and guessed Boss Jin must have hired them from a smaller Mercenary Corps.
He tilted his head, signaling for them to leave.
Now, only the assistant was left.
When the assistant saw Xue Can’s gaze sweep over to him, he quickly lowered his head, putting on a frightened expression.
"You were the one who came to the shop looking for Shen Lu yesterday, weren’t you?" Xue Can said suddenly.
The assistant didn’t say anything at first. After half a minute, he answered in a hoarse voice, "I-I don’t know what you’re talking about."
"What’s the use of disguising your voice? We Superpower Users never identify people by their voice anyway."
Before the words had even faded, Mo Bei’s combat knife was already buried in the assistant’s chest.
"You..." Gouts of blood gushed from the assistant’s mouth, and a moment later, he was dead.
Mo Bei pulled out his knife, confirmed all three were dead, and then gave Xue Can an "OK" sign.
After leaving the small house, Xue Can sent a message to Shen Lu.
Xue Can: Mission accomplished.
Shen Lu: Mr. Xue, you’re so efficient.
Xue Can had only been gone for an hour and a half, and he’d already handled it. Shen Lu had thought it would take him all night just to find them.
Xue Can: Everyone has their specialty. Boss Shen is also very fast at cooking.
Shen Lu: True. We’re all professionals in our own way.
After sending the message, Shen Lu closed the chat window.
With Boss Jin dead, a weight was temporarily lifted from her heart.
However, after this chaos ended, the Lower City District Chamber of Commerce was bound to be reshuffled. She didn’t know who would come out on top, or if they would continue to target her.
Shen Lu prayed silently. ’I hope the new head of the Commerce Association doesn’t target me. Just let me live. Otherwise, I’ll just have to find a way to get rid of the new head, too.’
Before going to sleep, Shen Lu placed the sheet-metal house in the northwest corner of the backyard. After pressing "confirm," she waited a minute, and the display showed "Construction Complete."
Shen Lu adjusted its orientation so the main door wouldn’t face the wire-mesh fence, then she clicked to look inside.
It was described as the simplest sheet-metal house, but it was fully equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living room. The only thing was that the space wasn’t large; it was a one-bedroom, one-living-room, one-bathroom, one-kitchen house of about 48 square meters.
Shen Lu thought for a moment, then turned off the water supply to the sheet-metal house, leaving only the power on.
All the water in the shop was provided by the system and had magical properties. Shen Lu was afraid the Liu Family would cause some trouble, so she simply cut off the water. Besides, they wouldn’t have had water if they were living anywhere else.
Wu Jun patted Lin Zhou next to him. "Hey, look, a house suddenly appeared in the backyard."
Lin Zhou lifted his eyelids for a glance. "No need to make a big deal out of it. Next time something like this happens, just record it and send it to the commander."
"Don’t you think it’s weird? The house just appeared out of thin air, and there were no energy fluctuations around it at all."
"Got too much time on your hands?" Lin Zhou was an introvert who disliked noise, whereas Wu Jun was the complete opposite, able to babble on and on about the smallest things. "If you’re that bored, go on patrol."
Lin Zhou deeply missed his old partner. ’Ye Fan was so much better,’ he thought. ’He wouldn’t grab me to chat nonstop for no reason.’
But for the past two days, for the sake of the handover, Ye Fan was mainly training Huo Qian, while he was responsible for Wu Jun.
"Right, it’s about time for patrol." Wu Jun didn’t detect the disdain in Lin Zhou’s words and thought he was just giving him work advice. He happily went off to patrol.
Lin Zhou secretly rolled his eyes. ̄へ ̄
The next day, Shen Lu went down early in the morning to tell the Liu Family to move into the sheet-metal house.
"What house? I looked before bed yesterday. The backyard was completely empty, not a single thing there." Liu Yaozu lay comfortably in bed, unwilling to move.
Yang Jing let out a sound of surprise. "Hey, there really is a house."
Liu Yaozu turned his head to look. Through the window, he could clearly see an olive-green sheet-metal house standing quietly in a corner of the backyard.
"I don’t like repeating myself." Shen Lu’s tone was flat. "I’ve already put your luggage inside. Now move over there immediately."
Liu Yaozu pouted and muttered, "That house doesn’t look like much."
He didn’t want to move out of the dorm.
"If you think it’s no good, you can go find a house yourself." Shen Lu wasn’t about to coddle him. "If you want to live here, you keep any and all opinions to yourself. Got it?"
Liu Yaozu gave a timid grunt.
’No way I’m moving out. I don’t want to get kidnapped again.’
’Even though I can’t stay in the dorm anymore, at least I’ll be living close to Shen Lu. I should be able to leech some benefits, right?’
Liu Qiang had also woken up this morning, but excessive blood loss had left him very weak, and he had little strength to speak.
Shen Lu had Wang Daguo lend a hand to help move the injured man.
The sheet-metal house was empty inside, with no furniture. She had Wang Daguo push in the handcart that Fu Cheng used to use to serve as a temporary bed. It was a decent fit for Liu Qiang to lie on by himself.
As for Liu Yaozu, Yang Jing made a bed on the floor for him, which would have to do.
