The first mistake the two hunters made was assuming Lucien was alone.

They dropped from the side walkway fast, Apex insignia clear under the loading lights. One spear locked toward Lucien’s throat.

The other sealed the alley exit with practiced timing, cutting off any ordinary escape.

"Don’t move."

Lucien lifted his hands halfway, eyes wide.

"...I can explain."

He never finished.

A silver-white bowstring sang through the dark.

Sana stood on the upper pipe line with the Elorian bow already drawn the gift from Queen Morwenna, pale wood traced with living green-gold veins.

Wind gathered around the arrowhead as if the night itself obeyed her aim. The air tightened. Dust lifted from the ground in a thin spiral.

She released.

The first hunter’s spear arm snapped back under a compressed air shot. The second was blasted into the wall by a spiral of wind strong enough to crack concrete.

Both impacts landed almost together, clean and brutal.

Both men dropped.

Lucien stared.

"I had a speech"

"Later," Sana said. "They already called it in."

Boots thundered from the bay.

Seven more Apex hunters flooded the lane, formation tight, ranks mixed. Energy shields bloomed across the front line.

Two casters took rear positions and began shaping containment patterns in the air. An A-Rank in reinforced armor slammed his fist into the ground hard enough to shake the alley floor.

Stone pillars exploded upward.

Sana did not retreat.

She ran along the rising stone, bow turning with her body, feet light and exact. One arrow split into three mid-flight, each carrying cutting wind, forcing the front line to break apart.

She leapt from one pillar to another, twisted in the air, and fired again point-blank into a raised shield. The barrier rang like struck metal, held for half a breath, then burst apart under the second shot.

The A-Rank charged through the dust with a roar.

"Archers die in close range!"

Sana slid under his swing, the blade missing her by inches. She planted a knee, drew in one smooth motion, and loosed an arrow straight into the ground at his feet.

A pillar of wind erupted and threw him skyward. Before he could land cleanly, another arrow pinned his coat to a crate wall and held him there long enough for her to move again.

Lucien ducked as debris rained down.

"There are still too many!"

"Then keep breathing," Sana snapped. "That is your only job."

For a moment, she owned the alley.

Wind howled between the walls. Apex hunters stumbled through broken formation, forced to defend against an archer who refused to stay at safe distance.

Every time they closed in, Sana was already gone, already aiming, already turning their numbers into clutter.

Then the rear line activated containment fields.

Pale light chains shot from three directions, locking space itself. The air grew heavy. Movement narrowed. Sana vaulted one chain, flipped under another, but the third clipped her shoulder and tore her balance for half a second. ℯℯ𝑙.

That was enough.

A hunter seized Lucien from behind and jammed a blade under his jaw.

"Stop!" he shouted. "One more step and he dies!"

The fight froze.

Sana’s bow remained raised, an arrow half-drawn, wind coiling restlessly around the tip. Her eyes locked on the man holding Lucien, measuring distance, angle, and timing with deadly calm.

One perfect shot could end it. One imperfect shot could end Lucien.

Lucien swallowed carefully.

"Sana... please choose the non-lethal arrow."

"Shut up," she said.

But she did not release.

The A-Rank ripped free of the crate and straightened, blood at the corner of his mouth. His earlier confidence had hardened into anger.

"Elorian bow techniques. Astral reader support. You two are not random thieves."

Another hunter lifted a wrist panel. Layers of restricted maps and coded routes flickered into the air above his arm, glowing against the dust-filled dark.

"This sector is already flagged," he said. "Private line. Off-registry cargo. Leonard’s channel. No outsider should know this route exists."

Lucien’s eyes flicked to the panel despite the blade at his throat.

So Apex really ran two systems.

One public.

One belonging only to Leonard Valen.

Hidden routes. Sealed cargo. Silent authority.

Sana stored every word.

The A-Rank pointed his weapon at her.

"Drop the bow. You are coming underground."

Underground.

That single word shifted everything.

Sana’s gaze moved past them to a recessed service door behind sealed crates. Faint black residue clung to the frame like a scar only trained senses would notice. Corruption.

The same trail Lucien had locked onto from the rooftop. The real path was never the alley. It was that door.

She lowered her aim a fraction.

Then the alley exploded into motion again.

Sana fired not at the hostage-taker’s body, but at the ground behind his boot. The wind blast ripped his stance apart and tore Lucien free in the same shockwave.

At once she loosed a wide arc shot into the center of the group. A storm curtain of compressed air swallowed the lane in white dust and roaring pressure.

Visibility collapsed. Shouts scattered. Energy shots punched blind holes through the fog.

"Run!"

They smashed through the service door as alarms finally screamed alive. Stairs dropped steeply beneath them, colder with every level.

Clean guild plating gave way to older reinforced stone and unmarked conduits. The deeper they went, the less the place looked like a public facility and the more it felt like a sealed vein under the city.

Lucien pressed a hand to the wall while running, breath ragged.

"Stronger... the corruption is much stronger down here!"

Pursuit thundered above them. Voices echoed down the stairwell. Boots struck metal in uneven waves.

Sana did not slow until she turned the final corner and stopped so suddenly Lucien nearly crashed into her.

A black door stood set into the bedrock itself.

No handle.

No card slot.

Only a circular seal pulsing faintly, like a heartbeat trapped under glass. Corruption leaked from its edges and made the air taste of metal and ash.

Even standing still in front of it felt like standing too close to something that should not exist beneath Ashford.

Lucien’s voice fell to a whisper.

"...This is it."

Sana raised her bow.

Behind them, Apex hunters poured into the corridor in a rush of light and weapons.

And from the other side of the sealed door, something vast shifted as if whatever waited beyond it had just opened its eyes.
