The Magnificent Son-in-law
Chapter 1206 - 1206: No One Under the Bridge
In the huge bedroom, a man was sitting on the bed, staring fixedly at the round pill in his hand.
The bedroom was lavishly decorated: from the floor to the wallpaper, then the craftsmanship of the furniture, and even the little trinkets used as ornaments, everything screamed one word—"exquisite."
It was obvious the owner of this bedroom was loaded.
And the man sitting on the bed had been holding this posture for a full twenty minutes.
If not for the slight movements he occasionally made, he would really be no different from a lifelike statue…
If Xiao Feng were here right now, he would definitely recognize it.
The pill in the man's hand was the Original Heart Pill made by him.
And the man holding the Original Heart Pill was, of course, Wei Jianhua.
After another long while, a fierce light flashed in Wei Jianhua's eyes as he said loudly, "Instead of living like this, all weak and useless, I might as well just try it. If it works, great. If it kills me, that's a relief too!"
With that, he directly tossed the Original Heart Pill into his mouth and started chewing in big bites.
There were many reasons for his earlier hesitation, but the main one was that he was afraid Xiao Feng had done it on purpose and given him a poison pill.
And what he'd just said was more like his way of forcing himself to believe in Xiao Feng.
One minute passed…
Two minutes passed…
Five minutes passed…
"Heh! Hehehehehe…"
Wei Jianhua let out a string of laughs, and the last glimmer of hope in his eyes gradually dimmed.
He'd already lost count of how many times he'd gone through something like this.
But that whole process—from hope igniting in his heart, to nervously waiting for the drug to kick in, to hope slowly fading, and finally crashing into complete despair—hurt just as much every single time.
"Hoo…"
Taking a deep breath, Wei Jianhua stood up and walked toward the liquor cabinet beside the wall-mounted TV.
Normally speaking, very few people put a liquor cabinet in their bedroom.
But Wei Jianhua knew that without the numbness of alcohol, he'd be in for yet another sleepless night.
However, just as his hand touched the liquor cabinet's handle, he suddenly felt a surge of heat flare up three inches below his navel.
Then, at a slow yet clearly perceptible pace, it started spreading downward.
Wei Jianhua's eyes instantly widened; he had no idea what was going on.
He stood there dumbfounded for a while, then immediately yanked his pants down, only to see that what used to—?
"Pa!"
Wei Jianhua slapped himself across the face. The sting told him this wasn't a dream, and it also sobered him up a lot.
He hurriedly rubbed his eyes a few times, then looked down again. One hand braced against the wall, Wei Jianhua was so worked up his legs started trembling.
How many years!
How many goddamn years!
For a moment, Wei Jianhua almost wanted to rush out like this, bare-ass naked.
To drag every living thing in the house, including the animals, over here and—?
But he still managed to hold back that impulse and waited quietly.
With shaking hands, Wei Jianhua reached out and touched it. The feel under his fingers was so real, and the feedback was strong.
In that instant, he couldn't help bursting into tears!
It was as if all the discrimination and humiliation he'd suffered over the years had turned into tears and were pouring out of him.
Still, even though he was sobbing, there was a smile on his face.
If someone walked in right now, they'd probably call the psych ward on the spot.
After all, it was the middle of the night, and there was a naked man bracing himself against the wall, crying and laughing at the same time—no matter how you looked at it, that wasn't normal.
And most importantly—
After he stopped crying, Wei Jianhua hurriedly took out his phone, pulled up Xiao Feng's WeChat, and called him.
Given how he was feeling right now, to put it bluntly, if someone told him to call Xiao Feng "Dad," he wouldn't hesitate for a second. He'd shout it from the bottom of his heart, more heartfelt than any real son!
However, he called several times and kept getting the same prompt that no one was answering.
…
"You got a signal on your phone?"
Carrying the safe in his hand and walking up the slope, Xiao Feng suddenly stopped and asked.
Pei Dengke, who was in front, also halted when he heard that. He checked his phone and said, "We're in the suburbs. No signal's normal. My phone's got no signal either."
Xiao Feng didn't say anything more and signaled Pei Dengke to keep moving.
The slope was steep and narrow, only wide enough for three people to walk side by side.
On top of that, the ground was uneven, one deep step, one shallow step. If you weren't careful, it'd be easy to twist an ankle.
Because of that, the two of them weren't moving fast. They were using flashlights to light up the ground, only taking a step after making sure of their footing.
After walking like this for over ten minutes, they finally reached the top. Not far ahead was a small stone bridge, less than five meters long.
Under the bridge was the spot the other side had named for handing over the ransom.
Pei Dengke reminded him, "Boss Ba, if there's someone under the bridge, whatever you do, don't start a fight with them.
The one who comes to pick up the ransom is called the 'runner' in their slang. If he doesn't get back on time, Weiwei could get killed."
Xiao Feng nodded. He knew this drill even better than Pei Dengke, and he'd even done this kind of job himself.
But when he lit up his screen again and found there was still no signal, Xiao Feng started feeling that something was off.
This place was open and fairly high up, with no buildings around that could affect the signal. By right, reception should have been great.
If you thought it through that way, the signal was probably being jammed on purpose.
In other words, someone was lying in ambush nearby?
But before he could think it through, he saw Pei Dengke striding straight toward the stone bridge.
Xiao Feng had no choice but to follow for now, on full alert and ready to deal with anything.
"Anyone there?" Standing on the bridge, Pei Dengke shouted at the top of his lungs.
But no one answered for a long time.
There was no water in the ditch; it was overgrown with weeds and looked like it had been abandoned for ages.
Pei Dengke jumped down under the bridge, and a moment later he came running back out, roaring, "Which bastard called the cops? This is my friend, not a cop!"
His voice carried far into the distance, but just like before, it vanished without a trace, no response at all.
Xiao Feng frowned. "What is it?"
A moment later, a ball of paper wrapped around a stone flew up.
Xiao Feng caught it, opened it, and saw the words: "We could have settled this peacefully, but you wouldn't listen and called the cops behind our backs.
You show us no mercy, so don't blame us for what happens next!"
Just as he finished reading, another stone-wrapped ball of paper came flying up.
Xiao Feng reacted quickly, caught it, and opened it to read…
"We'll give you one more chance—and this is the last one. Go down the slope and head west. There's an abandoned duck farm.
There's a locust tree in front of the main gate. Within an hour, put the money on the stone table under the tree.
Remember!
You have to come alone to pay. If I see anyone else besides you again, then you can forget about ever seeing your sweetheart again!"
