Chapter 45

"Boss, Mrs. Salvador’s visit to the hospital was to see a gynecologist. She’s pregnant."

Rauf stared at the message.

The word ’pregnant’ danced on the screen.

His legs felt heavy, and he didn’t know if he should get out of the car or remain in it.

He was still staring at it when another message popped up from Henson.

’Do you need more information, boss?’

His last message snapped Rauf out of his daze. He dropped the phone, held the steering wheel of his car, and pressed the horn loudly.

Had he sent June out of the house when she was pregnant?

That was impossible.

He tried to recollect whether she had mentioned anything about being pregnant before his surgery. But none of his memories could recall them talking about being pregnant or not.

A small frown settled on his face.

So, it wasn’t just June but also his heir out there.

All thanks to Amie and his father.

Suddenly, there was a small tap on his window.

Rauf looked at the window and saw Henson’s face pressed against it. He made a sign to tell his boss he wanted to get into the car.

Rauf opened the door for him, and he dropped in. He let out a grin at Rauf.

"Congratulations, boss. You’re going to be a father."

Expecting Rauf to respond, he was stunned when he didn’t say a word.

Was he worthy of being congratulated when he had sent his pregnant wife and unborn child out into the street?

Henson seemed to read his thoughts. He focused his gaze towards the house. June was just a few houses away from where he was.

"What will you do, boss?"

At first, he was silent. But after a while, he nodded.

"Let’s leave for now. I’ll have to come back to her."

Henson looked from Rauf back to the house.

"Are you sure you don’t want to confront her now, boss?"

Rauf shook his head.

Without another word, he drove off, returning to the hotel.

He lay on his bed, confused, with a frown on his face and the pictures Henson had sent beside him.

It was no wonder she was placing her hand on her stomach.

It was to protect the baby.

But why didn’t she tell him about the baby?

If he knew, he wouldn’t have sent her away.

Suddenly, he jumped back onto his seat.

He had spent enough time away from his wife and child.

Now that he had found them, it was unjust to spend more time away from them.

He picked up his car key and sent for Henson.

Glad to be of help to his boss again, Henson was quick to return to the room.

"What do you need, boss?"

"Drive me to a kid’s store. I’m going over to June’s."

The sun had set outside. It had taken a lot of time to drive from June’s place to the hotel, and for them to go back to June’s place, it would probably be late in the night.

"This night, boss?"

"Of course."

Without arguing, he searched for the nearest kid’s store.

Thankfully, one of the stores with high reviews was still open.

Thirty minutes later, the men were standing in the middle of the store with no idea what to do or where to go.

Some of the ladies at the store stared shamelessly at them. It wasn’t every day they saw two handsome men dressed as if they were about to attend an important meeting looking so helpless in a store.

"Boss, I think that would make a suitable toy," Henson said, pointing at the rack of toy guns on the shelf.

Rauf’s eyes lit up at the prospect. If his child was a boy, it would surely make a wonderful toy.

They both moved towards the section.

Rauf picked random designs of the toys, while Henson checked them out, leaving the ones he thought weren’t good enough to hit the target.

Seeing how clueless they both looked in the store, one of the store assistants finally came to assist them.

She smiled at them.

"Are you getting this for your baby boy? How old is he?"

The men looked at each other.

How old was he supposed to call a baby that hadn’t been born yet?

"Still a baby."

The assistant nodded.

"Yeah. But when getting toys for your children, you need to consider their age and gender. A female child will prefer dolls and home set toys."

She pointed to the section filled with different dolls varying in different colors and sizes.

"And some male children will prefer cars and robots over guns. Their age determines it all."

Everything she said sounded weird to Rauf’s ears. Closing a deal seemed easier than picking up a gift toy.

"I’ll have one of everything," he concluded.

Since he had no idea what he was supposed to pick.

The sales rep opened and closed her mouth.

"Sir, one of everything in the store?"

Rauf nodded as if it was the only solution to solve the current problem.

The store was a one-story building filled with toys in every section.

Getting one of everything in the store was just too much. There was surely no place to keep them all.

"Sir, I’ll advise you to pick one or two things. Getting everything might overwhelm the child."

Rauf thought about it.

He didn’t mind getting the store itself if it was for his heir, but listening to the sales rep, it might just be too much.

"Fine. I’ll get that and that."

He pointed at the toy gun and fluffy pink doll.

It would suit either of them.

He got the gift package, and on his way, he got a rose flower with an apology note written on it.

"This should do."

He smiled at the gift in his hand.

"Boss, I’m sure Mrs. Salvador would be glad you found her," Henson said in assurance.

It was all Rauf needed to hear.

He assured himself that June would be glad to see him. She had always spoken about how happy she would be when he finally saw her.

He ordered Henson to return to the hotel and make preparations for them to return to Kansas while he drove downtown to apologize to June.

This time, he parked the car directly in front of Ellie’s apartment.

Picking up his gifts, he moved to the door.

There was no security or guard at the door. There was no way he would let his wife and heir continue staying in such an insecure environment.

He pressed the doorbell, and the sound of feet moving towards the door made him breathe in relief.

The last time he saw her, he hadn’t cared to look at her features carefully. But this time, he intended to note every part of her face as carefully as he could.

He wanted to imprint the look on her face.

The door opened, and a strange face stared right back at him.

Rauf didn’t need to be introduced to her before he knew she must be Ellie, June’s best friend.

He intended on introducing himself, but before he could say a single word, Ellie launched at him.

"What are you doing here?"

Rauf frowned.

He had never seen this woman in his life, but she seemed to know who he was, and from the look on her face, she wasn’t pleased to make his acquaintance.

He shifted on his foot.

There was no point exercising his power here. He came here to apologize to June, and that involved speaking politely.

"Ellie, right?" he asked.

For a brief second, the lady’s eyes widened.

"Yes."

And again, she didn’t let him speak.

"I know who you’re here for, but you’re mistaken. June is not here."

She puffed out her chest, blocking every inch of the door. Not that it would do anything if he actually decided to rush into the apartment.

But there was no way she would let him in without a fight.

He might look handsome, but deep within, he was ugly, and he didn’t deserve June in any way.

June was finally trying to live for herself. There was no way she would let some haunted past gain access to her.

Rauf stared at the lady in front of him. Even though she was tall for a woman’s standard, she was still short in his presence. And from the way she covered the frame of the door, she looked like an ant trying to block the way of an elephant.

But Rauf wasn’t going to force his way into the apartment.

He came here for a peaceful apology, and he intended on acting it out regardless of the provocation on his way.

He breathed in, trying to calm himself.

"I know June lives here, and I want to see her. I’m her husband."

Ellie sneered at the word ’husband’. Though her heart was beating fast from standing in front of a man who could destroy her future with just a phone call, she forced herself to confront him for June’s sake.

"What husband?" Ellie asked sarcastically.

Before more words could be exchanged, a sleepy June yawned, dragging her feet to the door.

"Are you okay, Ellie? Is something at the door?"

Ellie wanted to close the door before June could see the man at the door.

But it was too late.

She heard a gasp behind her and turned to see June’s eyes fixed on the man before her.
