Chapter 12: A new Life

As soon as they arrived back at home, June placed the letter deep inside Ellie’s bag. She hated that she had wasted enough of their time.

They should be long gone now, but because of her they were still here.

Once she was done, Ellie looked up at her. "Are you sure you didn’t forget anything?"

June scoffed. "I should be asking you that. Can we leave now."

They left the home and journey to the train station. Ellie had insisted that they shouldn’t travel by air. She claimed travelling by train might be slow, but it was fun. And more importantly, no one would know where they were going to as no one would bother checking a train station.

June slept most of the ride.

Occasionally, she woke up to eat and then talk a bit with Ellie.

She was saying goodbye to her life here, and more importantly, she was saying goodbye to Rauf.

Everything she plan to be was now at New Central State.

By the time the train would stopped and June got out of it. Her eyes moved everywhere. At every single point, they were people waiting.

She had never seen so many people waiting at the train station like this.

There was no lie that New Central State was the city for crowd.

She waited beside Ellie whose gaze danced around the station in search of something.

Then suddenly, she started waving at some old woman.

June didn’t have to be told that was Ellie’s grandmother. Ellie ran to her, pulling her in for a hug, while June waited awkwardly there.

But the older woman suddenly pulled her in for a hug. "Welcome to Central state. Ellie had told me a lot about you."

June’s eyes widened. "Thank you, ma."

Without wasting time, she ushered them into an old, deadbeat car. "I’m just glad that Ellie finally thought of returning home. I had been begging her to, but she had refused." Her eyes moved to June. "It’s all thanks to you."

The car drove at the slowest pace possible, and no matter how many times Ellie asked her to spend on the accelerator, she didn’t.

And though, they spend the most agonizing hour inside the car to Evelyn’s apartment

According to Ellie, Evelyn lives at a remote part of the control, but with how busy her street was, there was nothing remote about where the older woman lived.

"Once again, you should just feel at home."

And at home, June felt.

She felt more at home at Evelyn’s apartment than she did ever feel in hers.

She and Ellie went shopping to get her a few new clothes and she was finally able to read the letter she had gotten from her family.

It was a desperate plead from her mother to her father to let her see her again. And towards the ending there was a threat that he would regret it, if he continued to ignore him.

Her mother attached an address he could come visit her in.

But apparently, her father never cared that much about both of their feelings.

June was just glad to have gotten the letter, even though she had to tell lies to get it.

By Monday, she started working at the vet’s office as an assistant with hope of getting saving up so she could start making plans like she intended to.

Ellie also started working.

Every morning, grandma Evelyn would have prepared breakfast for them before they woke up. She usually prepared something more nutritional for June.

"Just for the baby. You need to eat better." She would tell her with a wink.

Several times, June tried to wake earlier than grandma Evelyn so she could help with the preparation of breakfast, but she was always waking late.

She had no idea if it was the pregnancy that always made her extra sleepy in the morning or if it was the fact that she felt totally at home with no thoughts in her mind.

Either ways, she was finally letting go off her past and building her life steadily with Ellie and grandma Evelyn.

When she got her first salary, the first thing she did was register for the prenatal.

And was finally able to hear her baby’s heartbeat for the first time.

Ellie held her hand as they both smiled at the sound of the little bundle of joy within her.

And June knew that, even though she hadn’t given birth yet, she would do anything. Absolutely anything for the little one growing inside of her.

"The baby is growing fine." The doctor started. "You just need to continue taking your prenatal and make sure not to miss an appointment."

June nodded.

"You can always come to the appointment with the baby’s father if you want."

June who had been responsive since, kept quiet all of a sudden.

It was Ellie that responded. "Thank you. She’ll never miss an appointment, I promise you that."

On the way back home, Ellie held June shoulder. "Don’t ever think of that bastard anymore. I told you, I’m here for you. And I’ll always be."

June nodded.

She went back to the vet’s hospital, instead of going home.

Treating the animals and being busy made her feel extremely useful and get her mind off things she didn’t want to think about.

Recently, she has been getting calls from her father, but she had decided not to pick it up. She even took the bold step of blocking his number.

She wanted nothing ever to do with the old man, and she wasn’t going to let anyone disrupt the peace she had finally gotten.

All she wanted to do now was save enough to go look for her mother at the address he had given her.

She only hoped that the old man wasn’t lying to her like she did to them.

Just as she was planning to close for the day. Someone suddenly opened the door to the hospital, holding an injured dog with dripping wound on its leg.

Regardless of how peculiar the man had dressed, June’s focus was on one thing - helping the dog.

The man placed the dog down and stared up at her. "Where’s the doctor?"

June swallowed. "You just missed her. But don’t worry, I’ll do anything to save your dog."

The man looked like he doubted her but after a while, he nodded. "Fine. Just save Milo and I promise to give you anything you want."

June chuckled. "Anything?"

The man nodded with an air of confidence June had only seen in Rauf. "Anything."
