The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife
Chapter 29: What the hell is going on in here?
The blade traced her cheekbone. Light. Deliberate. The threat more than the thing itself. Elena’s eyes were steady and professional, and she told Sienna everything she needed to know about what this woman was capable of.
"Let’s see," Elena murmured, "how Viktor feels about you after this." The door exploded open.
"What the hell is going on in here?"
Not a question.
Viktor filled the doorframe with three of his men behind him and an expression on his face that Sienna had not seen before. Not the controlled stillness. Not the almost-amusement. Not even the cold efficiency of a man managing a problem.
Something rawer than all of that. His eyes found Sienna first. The stained dress. The maids pinning her arms. The knife at her face.
The temperature of the room dropped approximately ten degrees in one second.
"Let her go." Quiet. Absolute. The voice of a man who was using every available resource to say two words instead of doing what he actually wanted to do.
The maids released her instantly.
Sienna straightened. Rolled her shoulders back. Smoothed the ruined front of the gold dress with hands that were steadier than they had any right to be.
Viktor’s eyes moved to Elena. To the knife. Back to Elena.
"Viktor, darling..." Elena began.
"Don’t." One word. The word landed, and Elena stopped speaking the way people stop speaking when a door closes in their face. "Don’t say a single word."
He crossed the room. Stopped in front of Sienna. His hand came up and turned her face gently, checking the cheek where the blade had traced, the expression of a man looking for damage with a jaw so tight it could have cut the same glass.
"Are you hurt?" Low. Direct. For her only.
Sienna looked up at him.
Are you hurt, said the man who had kidnapped her. Are you hurt, said the man who had turned her life completely upside down, married her in a hallway, and sent her downstairs alone into a room with his stepmother and a letter opener.*
She almost laughed.
"I’m fine," she said instead. "Your stepmother, however..." she glanced at Elena’s soaked outfit with perfect composure, "... is going to need to change."
Behind Viktor, one of his men looked at the ceiling.
Marco, who had seen many things in eleven years, looked at Sienna Vale in her ruined gold dress and made a private, quiet decision.
This one, he thought, is going to survive just fine. Elena stepped back.
The performance that followed was, Sienna had to admit, technically impressive. The knife disappeared somewhere, returned to the table, slipped into a pocket, it didn’t matter, and Elena rearranged her face into something that managed, against all available evidence, to suggest that the last three minutes had been a minor social misunderstanding.
"Just a family welcome," she said lightly. The smile of a woman who had been doing this long enough to make it look natural. "A little initiation. Surely you understand, Viktor..."
Sienna said nothing.
She was holding her arm.
Not dramatically. Not performing. Just.. holding it, the way you hold something that hurts when you’d rather not admit that it hurts.
The drop of coffee had been small. She had moved fast enough. But fast enough and unscathed were not the same thing, and the skin beneath the sleeve of the ruined gold dress had formed an opinion about this morning that she couldn’t entirely argue with.
Viktor moved toward her. She stepped back. Shifted her arm away from his reach.
The wince was involuntary. She hated it. His face did something.
"Whose hands," he said, very quietly, to the general room, "do I need to break?"
It was not, technically, a question.
Elena’s composure flickered. Just slightly. The flicker of a woman who had spent enough years in rooms with Viktor Kessler to know that the quiet register was the one to fear.
"Viktor, dear." She clasped her hands. Reasonable. Concerned. "I was only trying to help. She will be at the gala tonight, you can’t send her out looking like.." a brief, sorrowful look at the coffee stain spreading across the Versace, "a poor rat. Someone had to..."
"Let me be clear about something."
Viktor turned.
His voice had not risen. It did not rise. That was the thing about him that Sienna was beginning to understand — the volume never changed. The temperature did. And right now the temperature was doing something that made the maids near the wall press themselves fractionally flatter against it.
"You are a guest in my house." He said each word with the separate, deliberate weight of someone who wanted them remembered individually.
"She..." his eyes moved briefly to Sienna, "... is here under my name. Under my protection." He tilted his head at Elena.
"So explain to me, what exactly made you think you had the right to teach her anything?"
"Viktor, I was only.."
"In this household." His voice finally shifted, not loud, but the way a door shifts when the wind changes behind it, the pressure of something much larger moving through a small space.
"My wife is above any gold-digging widow." He let that land exactly where he’d aimed it. "Are we clear?"
Elena said nothing He turned to his guards.
"The maids." He gestured. Simple. Final. "Take them out. Make sure they understand who runs this house. Make sure it sticks."
The maids were removed.
Without ceremony. Without noise. With the efficient, quiet speed of men who had been given clear instructions and intended to follow them.
Viktor turned back to Elena.
"One warning," he said. "This is it. The only one." He moved toward the door and held it open with the perfect, terrible courtesy of a man throwing someone out of his house and opening the door for them to make the point.
"Now get out." Elena walked.
Slowly. Deliberately. Spine straight, chin up, every inch of her refusing to be diminished even as she was clearly, definitively being removed from the room. She paused at the door. Opened her mouth.
Viktor’s expression suggested she reconsider. She walked out. The door closed.
