The Mad Healer: My Patients Are Humanity's Most Dangerous Yanderes
Chapter 62: The Swamp Tyrant
Chapter 62: Chapter 62: The Swamp Tyrant
The joint force moved cautiously across the wasteland, cracked earth stretching out under a pale sky.
The heroes kept tight formation, avoiding unnecessary fights wherever they could. This wasn’t their world. They didn’t know its ecology, its territories, or how anything living here would react to a small army of powerful awakened crossing its ground. The fewer enemies they drew, the better.
They couldn’t avoid everything, though. A group of reptilian monsters broke from behind a rocky ridge: six B-ranks, two A-ranks and Commander Draven raised one hand, stopping the whole formation.
"No large-scale attacks."
Orion vanished, a streak of lightning tearing across the flats, and one monster dropped.
Another followed. Kael’s flames flashed briefly and took down two more. The rest charged, and Aria stepped forward, ice forming into a blade in her hand: one slash, one dead reptile.
Darius’s earth construct crushed a second beneath it. Within seconds the whole group was down.
Draven looked at the bodies. "Keep moving."
---
**The First Camp**
By evening they’d covered real ground, though the landscape hadn’t changed once: wasteland, rock, dust, nothing else, not even enough vegetation to count as food.
That wasn’t a problem, though. Draven raised his hand, a faint spatial distortion rippling beside him as the ring on his finger glowed, and several large containers dropped onto the ground: water, preserved food, mana supplements, cooking gear, emergency medical supplies, even spare equipment.
Kael stared. "That’s a lot."
"Of course."
"How much can that thing hold?"
"Enough."
Felix looked at the ring and knew exactly what it was: a specialized spatial storage item, not something money alone could buy.
The core behind it had come from an SS-rank monster, rare enough that even wealth didn’t guarantee access, and Draven had personally killed the thing it came from.
Felix gave a low whistle, eyeing the artifact. "Nice ring."
"Interested?" Garrick grunted, a rough smirk tugging at his scarred face.
"Very."
"Then go hunt the boss."
"Yeah, sure," Felix muttered, rolling his eyes. "Right after I finish my afternoon nap."
Camp went up fast, most of the group working through Draven’s supplies while Felix opened his own container off to the side: small, compact, nothing close to what Draven carried.
Seraphina noticed immediately, eyes brightening.
"Is that yours?"
"Yeah." He opened it, revealing a handful of containers of food he’d cooked himself before they left: a small portion, since homemade food didn’t keep well on a multi-day mission and this was more of a treat than actual sustenance.
Seraphina reached straight over and grabbed one anyway.
Felix blinked at his empty hands. "Hey. That’s mine."
Seraphina paused, looking up at him with wide, pitiful eyes.
He held her gaze for three seconds before letting out a soft laugh and shaking his head. "Fine, take it."
She wasted no time digging in, quiet satisfaction written all over her face.
A few minutes later Kael wandered over. "Hey, Seraphina."
"What?"
"Can I have some?"
She covered the container with both hands, eyes narrowing.
"...What?" Kael said, stopping mid-step.
"These are Felix’s."
"I know."
"Then why are you asking?"
"Because you clearly have plenty."
"No." She didn’t budge and there genuinely wasn’t much to spare, not with how little Felix had actually packed.
Kael looked over. "Felix."
Felix was already eating out of Draven’s supply stack, not his own. He glanced up. "What?"
"Your girlfriend won’t share."
"Friend," Seraphina said, dangerously flat.
Kael raised both hands. "Right. Friend."
"You heard her," Felix said, laughing.
Kael sighed and walked off. Seraphina went back to her food, satisfied, and Felix watched her a second before shaking his head, smiling.
---
The night passed without incident, the group rotating watch through hours of eerie, total silence: no animal calls, no wind, nothing but the occasional distant shuffle of reptiles somewhere out in the dark.
Felix eventually fell asleep. Seraphina stayed up a while longer, glanced over at him once, and smiled to herself before finally closing her eyes.
---
**The Second Day**
They set out again before the sun had properly cleared the horizon, hours passing across identical wasteland with no sign of the territories they’d been warned about.
They ran into isolated groups of reptiles now and then: Orion and Kael handled those fast, lightning flashing, fire erupting, silence returning within seconds.
They avoided prolonged fights on purpose; Draven had made the objective clear from the start. Nothing that alerted the wider territories.
Half a day in, he stopped dead. Everyone noticed at once.
Aria crossed to him. "What is it?"
He raised one hand. "Look."
Ahead, kilometers out, sat something enormous: a dark smear against the horizon that resolved, as they got closer, into water.
A swamp, though calling it that felt like an understatement. It stretched for miles, dark water studded with huge trees, twisted branches reaching skyward, mist hanging low over the surface.
Occasionally something massive shifted beneath the water without breaking it.
Draven’s expression sharpened. "This is probably it."
"You can sense it?" Aria asked.
"A powerful presence. Very powerful." Every hero straightened at that.
He looked to Orion. "Scout it."
"Understood." Orion took two others and vanished. The rest of the group waited, minutes stretching out, until Orion reappeared with an unusually serious look on his face.
"Massive numbers of monsters in there. Mostly B and A rank." A pause. "A few stronger signatures further in, couldn’t get close enough to pin them down exactly."
Draven nodded. "Numbers?"
"Couldn’t say for certain."
Aria looked at the swamp, then at him. "Commander."
"Go ahead."
She turned to her team. "We clear the outer edge." A gesture toward the water.
"Commander’s team moves in from the interior. Once the outside’s clear, we converge inside."
"Understood," Darius said.
Draven said to his own team. "Move."
The two forces split and advanced.
---
**The Swamp**
The moment Aria’s team crossed into the outer swamp, the dark water erupted.
SPLASH!
Dozens of reptilian horrors broke the surface all at once: colossal serpents, armored crocodilians, jagged-scaled predators, and winged terrors. Some were the size of utility trucks; others were far larger.
"Formation!" Aria barked.
The swamp violently came apart. Sheets of ice sheared across the waterline, roaring plumes of fire burned through the heavy mist, earthen pillars thrust upward from the mud, and jagged arcs of lightning whipped between the weeping trees.
Felix shifted to cover Seraphina’s flank just as three massive, A-rank serpents struck in unison. One tore straight toward him, jaws wide, hissing venom into the air.
"Left," Felix called.
Seraphina moved before the syllable ended.
KZZZT—SHRRK!
Blue static flashed across the water as her lightning-coated blade sliced clean through the beast’s armored throat in a spray of dark blood.
Felix ducked a second lunging jaw without looking.
"Behind you."
She didn’t waste time checking. Spinning on her heel with a pressurized FWOOSH, she fired a blast of compressed water that knocked the lunging beast off balance.
Felix closed the gap instantly, channeling mana down his arm with a deep, resonant THWUM before burying an emerald-coated fist directly into its chest plate.
BOOM!
CRUNCH
The sickening sound of shattered bone echoed across the bank as the force crumpled the beast’s ribcage, slamming its carcass deep into the mud.
A third snake snapped at Seraphina’s blind spot.
WHAM!
Felix stepped in, driving an uppercut into its lower jaw hard enough to snap bone, leaving it dazed long enough for her blade to finish the kill with a wet, decisive SLSHH.
They barely needed words after that. A nod, a shift in footing, a clean parry, no hesitation, no wasted motion.
They fought like partners who had traded blows and watched each other’s backs for years instead of a few short months.
Ahead, Darius traded brutal strikes with a pair of A-ranks, the tectonic CRACK of earth constructs holding one beast pinned while he battered the other.
Aria tore through the battlefield; B-ranks collapsed in seconds beneath her, while A-ranks barely bought themselves minutes.
Ryan drove back two predators on his own.
ROAR!
Lena’s wind accelerated Kael’s firestorms into blinding infernos that flashed mist into screaming steam.
Mira stepped through spatial folds with a faint pop, cutting tendons from angles no beast could track, while Orion blurred through the shallows like blue lightning.
Fifteen minutes later, the fighting ceased. The outer basin went dead quiet, leaving hundreds of reptilian corpses floating in the stained, churning water.
"Move up!" Aria commanded, catching her breath. "Into the center!"
---
**The Heart of the Swamp**
The mist thickened with every step deeper in, dead monsters littering the path ahead of them, none of it Aria’s team’s work.
Draven’s group had already cut through here. The trail led them into a massive clearing, and they stopped dead the second they reached it.
Draven’s team stood ahead of them. Just staring.
Aria approached. "Commander?"
He didn’t answer. Felix stepped up beside her, and then he saw it too, and his expression changed on the spot.
Kael took a slow step backward. "So that’s—"
His voice barely made it out. "That’s an SS-rank?"
"My god," Lena breathed.
The creature dominated the center of the swamp: a monstrous crocodilian shape, though the word barely covered it.
Seventy meters long, easily. Its four legs were thick as support columns, each foot ending in black claws long enough to gouge through stone.
Its whole body was armored in overlapping dark-green scales, each one nearly as large as a human torso, and running down its spine were rows of jagged ridges, hide and spikes alike lit from within by a faint blue-green mana glow that pulsed with every breath it took.
Its tail alone could have swept the entire clearing in one motion.
Its head was worse. An elongated crocodile skull, jaws packed with rows of serrated teeth, deep golden eyes, four backward-curving horns, and around its throat a natural collar of overlapping armor plates.
Water ran constantly off its hide, and the swamp itself seemed to breathe with it, mist pulled inward on every inhale, ripples rolling out across the water on every exhale.
Felix’s eyes narrowed, every instinct in him screaming the same word. *Danger.*
"Water, Earth, and Sound," Aria said quietly, mana-sense still reading the creature. "Three affinities, all active at once."
Draven’s jaw tightened. "That explains the pressure."
He’d felt it the moment they walked in, the swamp answering to something with earth beneath it, water running through it, and a voice that could probably shatter stone if it wanted to.
The creature lifted its head slowly, golden eyes sweeping the gathered heroes before settling: first on Felix, then on Draven.
A low rumble built in its throat, and the whole swamp trembled with it.
Draven stepped forward, Titan mana spreading visibly through his frame. "Everyone."
His voice had lost every trace of humor. "Don’t underestimate this thing."
The creature’s jaws opened, and a roar tore through the swamp loud enough to shake the world itself.
Felix clenched his fists, emerald mana wrapping slowly around both arms. Seraphina moved in beside him. Aria raised a hand. Darius braced his earth constructs. Draven’s body lit with crimson fire.
The SS-rank lowered its head, and the entire swamp seemed to hold its breath.
