Chapter 34: Chapter 34: The Demon Settlement

The demon had been running for nearly an hour, the team trailing at a careful distance, staying just far enough back to avoid being spotted. It moved fast through the dense forest, occasionally glancing back like it suspected something was following, but it never actually saw them.

Eventually the trees began to thin. Orion, scouting ahead, stopped cold and raised a hand. Everyone froze. He came back a moment later looking unusually serious.

"There."

"How many?" Aria asked.

"Thousands."

The team exchanged glances and moved up carefully until the forest opened out and what lay beyond made even the most experienced among them pause.

A massive settlement filled the valley below, dark stone buildings packed close together, demon soldiers moving through the streets in numbers that were hard to process at a glance.

"Estimate?" Aria asked.

"Around ten thousand," Orion said.

Kael let out a low whistle. "That’s quite a neighborhood."

Darius studied the layout. "Most of them are weak. Mostly D and E rank, a scattering of C-ranks."

"There are stronger ones near the center," Orion said, pointing. Around a massive structure at the settlement’s heart stood a cluster of demons, several clearly A-rank, and above all of them, something with a mana signature far beyond that.

Aria’s mouth curved into a slow, amused smile.

"That expression usually means something terrible’s about to happen," Felix said.

"It does." She surveyed the settlement. "Intelligent species have one weakness beasts don’t. They gather."

"Now that’s something I understand," Felix said, eyes lighting up.

She ignored him and turned to the group. "We’re not going in. We surround them." She pointed out positions. "Kael, east."

"Finally," Kael grinned.

"Seraphina, west."

A nod.

"Darius, south."

He cracked his knuckles. "And you?"

"North. We hit simultaneously." Her gaze swept the rest of the team. "Felix, Orion, Lena, Mira, Ryan, and the other B-ranks stay outside the initial assault."

"Why?" Kael asked.

"None of you have the kind of wide-area output we need for this stage."

Felix shrugged. "Fair."

"Once the numbers are down, everyone moves in," Aria said. "Don’t underestimate them, intelligent demons are far more dangerous than ordinary monsters."

"Understood," the group answered together.

She raised her hand. "Move."

---

Seraphina took her position on the western side, thousands of demons visible below her.

She raised both palms.

VWOOOM.

Ambient moisture in the air answered her call, bending toward her palms in visible, swirling ribbons. The local mana pressure plummeted as she drew in the atmospheric energy like a localized gravitational singularity.

Felix, watching from a distance, caught it immediately. *That’s a ridiculous amount of mana.*

She kept pulling it in. Years spent barely touching her own abilities had left her proficiency stagnant while her core kept developing underneath it, until she’d hit the absolute ceiling an S-rank core could naturally hold and the result was a mana pool at least double what an ordinary peak S-rank carried.

She had no real sense of how abnormal that actually was. She just kept gathering, compressing, shaping.

Above the settlement, the water didn’t just form into a sphere, it split and thinned into hundreds of razor-edged waves, spiked crests running the length of each one, and lightning began threading through the whole structure, crackling along every edge until the entire formation looked less like water and more like a storm given blades.

Felix stared. "She’s gotten better."

Aria signaled from the northern ridge. "Mark targets."

FWSSSHHH!

Kael’s flames flared into an ocean of crimson fire.

RUMBLE.

Darius slammed both palms into the bedrock, sending seismic fissures screaming down toward the valley floor.

CRACK-FROST.

Aria’s glacial frost crested over the northern pass like a frozen tidal wave.

Aria’s arm slashed downward. "Execute!"

Four localized cataclysms fell at once.

BOOOOM!

Kael’s inferno swept through the eastern district like an erupting furnace.

SHRRR-KRA-KOOM!

On the western front, Seraphina dropped her hands. Thousands of electrified water scythes screamed downward, shearing through battlements, stone houses, and demon armor with indiscriminate velocity.

CRASH!

Darius’s tectonic pillars punched through the streets, flinging barracks into the air, while Aria’s sub-zero glacier froze the northern quarters solid in a sheet of shattered rime.

The valley floor detonated into an absolute nightmare of flame, pressurized water, ruptured stone, and blinding ice.

Within thirty seconds, an army of ten thousand was reduced to scorched rubble and ash.

When the dust started to settle, the numbers told the story: ten thousand demons reduced to barely a hundred, and the survivors were the strongest of them: a handful of A-ranks who’d managed to shield themselves, and at the center of the wreckage, the source of that massive mana signature.

The boss. An S-rank demon.

"Everyone," Aria called, and the rest of the team gathered. She pointed at the boss. "Darius, with me. We’ll keep it occupied." Her eyes swept the others. "The rest of you clear what’s left, then come assist."

"Roger," the group answered as one, and the battle began in earnest.

---

Ryan led the ground breach, locking eyes with a massive, four-armed A-rank demon brute.

CLANG!

The demon’s greataxe crashed against Ryan’s tower shield, sending a kinetic shockwave rippling through the cobblestones. The impact drove Ryan’s boots three inches into the stone, the sheer force tearing through his pauldron.

He didn’t give an inch.

His Titan affinity roared to life, muscle fibers hardening to iron, his mana core straining violently against its internal walls, until the ceiling shattered.

KRA-BOOM!

A concussive shockwave of dense, heavy mana burst outward from Ryan’s chest, kicking up a ring of pulverized rubble.

He sucked in a ragged breath, looking down at his knuckles. His mana coating had darkened, gaining the impenetrable density of solid granite.

"Look who finally broke the ceiling!" Kael shouted over the noise, blasting a demon with a lance of white flame.

A-rank. The breakthrough was complete.

ROAAR!

The demon brute swung again. Ryan’s shield flashed, catching the strike effortlessly. He grinned beneath his visor. "My turn."

---

On the western courtyard, Seraphina met an A-rank demon swordsman head-on.

CLASH!

She parried a jagged broadsword with a compressed water blade, sliding backward across the stone as lightning crackled along her calves.

The demon lunged in a high-speed thrust; she ducked under the blade’s path, manifesting a condensed water spike in her right palm that drove clean through its chest armor.

SKR-SHUCK.

The demon bellowed in agony, swinging a vicious backhand. Seraphina displaced in a flash of static, her reflexes accelerating with every passing second. Her lightning moved intuitively now, syncing to her muscle memory without a conscious command.

Mid-stride, the internal geometry of her mana channels shifted.

"Seraphina!" Felix’s voice carried over the din, but she was entirely submerged in combat focus.

HUMMM.

The water swirling around her limbs compressed down to a razor’s edge, turning so dense it took on a translucent, glassy sheen.

Her water proficiency smashed clean through its barrier, vaulting from High III to High II.

In the exact same heartbeat, the static current dancing across her skin contracted, dropping from Mid II into a tight, frictionless Mid I coat.

A double proficiency breakthrough mid-combat.

Lena’s jaw dropped from behind her wind barrier.

"Are you kidding me? A double rank-up while trading blows?"

"She’s a monster!" Kael yelled, lobbing another fireball.

"Maintain the advance!" Aria’s voice cut through the chaos.

Seraphina didn’t hesitate. She stepped through the demon’s guard, her pressurized blade cleaving the creature’s torso in a single, flawless arc.

SPLAT.

The demon collapsed into two pieces.

Seraphina stood over the carcass, her chest rising and falling rhythmically, the crackling static around her knuckles fading into calm, silent air.

Two proficiencies elevated in a single sequence.

Across the square, Felix finished his own target, an A-rank caster left limp against a shattered pillar.

Without pausing to clean his knuckles, he darted across the battlefield.

HISSSS.

Emerald healing mana cascaded from his hands like liquid light. Torn tendons knit back together, cracked ribs bonded, and exhausted fighters received vital stabilization.

"Clear. Reposition," he barked, tapping a vanguard soldier’s shoulder and pivoting toward the next wounded ally.

Then his eyes locked onto the central plaza.

Aria and Darius were locked in a savage struggle against the S-rank demon lord: black mana clashing against glacial spikes, seismic shockwaves shivering through the bedrock.

Felix’s face split into a reckless grin. "Looks fun."

BOOM.

He sprinted straight into the epicenter.

The siege against the demon lord raged for another forty minutes, every kinetic collision reducing more of the black stone citadel to dust.

Felix wove through the melee, trading devastating close-quarters strikes while restoring Darius’s shattered arm mid-grapple.

Seraphina funneled pressurized water into every exposed joint, fighting down to the final drop of her reserves.

Ryan stood like an immovable iron bastion, testing his new A-rank baseline against lethal blows.

Kael carpeted the ruins in localized firestorms.

Mira bent the surrounding space in sharp distortions, deflecting the boss’s dark mana beams into empty air.

Lena’s gale blades cut off any possible retreat, while Orion’s daggers struck the moment the creature’s defenses faltered.

With a final, earth-shaking crash, the demon lord collapsed onto the plaza stones.

THUD.

Silence washed over the valley, thick and heavy.

Every demon in the settlement was dead.

The team stood scattered among the wreckage, nobody moving for a long moment.

Then Kael dropped flat onto the ground. "I’m done."

"Same," Lena said, sitting beside him.

Ryan collapsed backward. Darius just lay where he stood. Even Aria looked worn through.

Felix dropped onto his back too. "That was fun."

Everyone stared at him. Kael raised one finger without lifting his head. "I hate you."

Felix laughed.

---

They set up camp at the edge of the ruined settlement, too drained for anything more complicated than food and a fire.

Seraphina sat beside Felix, quiet for once, not watching the battlefield anymore.

Then movement stirred at the edge of camp, and everyone tensed: a group of elves approaching slowly, unarmed, expressions peaceful.

Aria stood. The elves spoke, none of it understandable, but the meaning came through anyway in the way they bowed, again and again, pointing between the ruined settlement and the heroes standing in front of them.

Gratitude. Plain as anything.

"We understand," Aria said, smiling.

The elves kept talking, and the team just smiled back awkwardly, until a small figure stepped forward from the group: a little elf girl, carrying flowers in both hands. She walked straight up to Seraphina.

Seraphina stared down at her. The child held the flowers out, and for a long moment Seraphina didn’t move at all, looking between the flowers and the girl’s face like she wasn’t sure what to do with either.

Then she reached out slowly and accepted them. The girl’s whole face lit up. Seraphina, almost on instinct, reached down and touched the top of her head gently, and the girl giggled and ran back to the others with a huge grin.

Seraphina looked down at the flowers in her hands, holding them like they were something that might break.

Felix watched her from across the fire, a small smile settling on his face. He’d seen her kill. He’d seen her fight without an ounce of fear in her. But this... this was the first time he’d ever seen her look completely at peace.

He couldn’t help smiling at that.
