Chapter 28: Chapter 28: The Second Day

The forest was still dark when the team started moving again, the campfire burned down to embers, a thin mist sitting low over the ground.

Seraphina had barely slept because for the first time she’d slept under open sky, listening to the forest all night: distant cries, rustling leaves, the occasional crack of a branch somewhere out in the dark.

She’d liked it. More than that, Felix had been sleeping only a few meters away, and something about that fact alone had kept her strangely at peace the whole night.

Now the team was moving again, Seraphina silent at Felix’s side while Aria gave the morning briefing. "We’ve cleared about forty percent of the assigned area. The boss chamber should be somewhere deeper in." She looked around at the group. "Today we focus on locating it." Her eyes settled on Seraphina. "Stay with Felix until we’ve pinned it down."

Seraphina nodded. Felix glanced at her. "Ready?"

"Yes."

---

The team pushed deeper into the forest, and the monsters got stronger with every stretch: bigger, faster, more coordinated. Felix seemed to be enjoying every second of it. When a large beast broke through the trees ahead, he was already moving.

Seraphina watched him fight again, and every time it revealed something new about him. His movements kept getting more refined, his strikes more precise. He wasn’t overpowering these things anymore; he was reading them, predicting them, turning their own momentum back against them.

*Beautiful,* she thought. There was something almost frightening in the way he fought, something that made him look more alive than she’d ever seen him outside of combat. She wanted to understand that part of him too.

A beast rushed her while she was still watching him, and she reacted on instinct, lightning through her legs, gone before its claws closed on empty air, reappearing above it with water condensing around her hand and driving straight down through its body.

"Good," Felix called over.

"Was that better?"

"Much better." He walked closer, nodding at her legs. "Your lightning control’s improving. You’re still wasting mana on the acceleration, though, don’t push it all outward. Keep it close to the muscle."

She demonstrated, tightening the current around her legs, and he smiled. "Exactly."

She liked this, every correction, every piece of instruction, every minute he spent actually teaching her instead of just watching.

---

By noon they’d reached a clearing, and Aria’s hand shot up. Everyone froze.

"Mana signature." The whole group went alert at once. She closed her eyes a moment. "Something’s close."

Ryan’s grip tightened on his weapon. Kael’s flames caught. Lena readied her spellwork. Orion slipped into the trees and, seconds later, his voice came through the comms: "Large structure ahead."

"Boss chamber," Aria said.

Seraphina’s pulse picked up. "First boss fight?" Felix asked.

She nodded.

"Don’t rush it."

"I won’t."

"Good."

They moved in.

The gate itself had been chosen deliberately: a peak A-rank instead of the S-ranks the team usually handled. With Seraphina joining a live mission for the first time, nobody on the team wanted to find out how she’d react to real pressure in the middle of something that could actually kill all of them if it went wrong.

An A-rank gate gave everyone room to watch her, correct her, and pull her out fast if anything went sideways, without betting the whole team’s safety on the gamble.

---

The boss broke out of the treeline: a massive beast clad in dark, overlapping scales, nearly twice the size of anything they’d fought so far.

Yellow lightning arced violently across a pair of massive, curved horns.

Aria’s expression sharpened. "Peak A-rank."

"Perfect," Felix said, grinning, and Seraphina couldn’t help smiling at how genuinely excited he looked.

Aria started calling out positions. "Ryan, Darius, frontline. Kael, Lena, ranged support. Orion, find its blind spots. Mira, support." Her eyes found Felix. "You and Seraphina."

"Got it."

Seraphina settled into position.

BZZZZT.

Lightning coiled tight around her boots, while water condensed around her hands in twin, spiraling torrents.

ROOOAAARRR!

The beast bellowed loud enough to rattle the loose stones across the clearing.

THUMP-THUMP-THUMP!

It charged, tearing up the earth with every stride.

The fight opened fast.

BOOM!

Ryan and Darius took the impact head-on, their shields locking as the concussive shockwave rolled through the surrounding ironwood trees.

FWSSSHHH!

Kael unleashed a torrent of white-hot fire, while Lena’s kinetic bolts hammered into the beast’s flanks. Orion flickered from the shadows behind it—

SHUCK-SHUCK!

—driving twin daggers deep into its rear tendons.

The beast weathered all of it without slowing much, thrashing violently.

HISSSS.

Felix stayed in constant motion, emerald healing mana flaring across his fingertips as he sealed flesh and re-knit bruised ribs almost as fast as the injuries opened.

Beside him, Seraphina held close, striking wherever he pointed, pivoting wherever he called it, water and lightning weaving together faster and cleaner with every exchange.

"Left!" he shouted at one point.

SWOOSH.

She displaced before the syllable fully cleared his mouth, the beast’s talons raking through empty air where she’d been standing a half-second earlier.

SLASH.

She answered instantly with a condensed water blade that sliced clean through its armored side.

SPLAT.

Black blood sprayed across the underbrush.

"That’s it!" Felix laughed.

She’d never felt this alive in her life.

---

A few minutes later the beast finally went down, and the team gathered around the corpse. A peak A-rank was well inside what all of them could handle without breaking a sweat; if anything, most of them had held back a little, keeping an eye on Seraphina rather than pushing the fight themselves.

This had never been about testing their own limits. It had been about testing hers, safely, with everyone close enough to step in if it went wrong.

Felix was covered in blood again. Seraphina looked at him, felt her face warm, and looked away fast.

Kael caught it. His eyebrows shot up, and he leaned toward Lena. "Did you see that?"

"Yes."

"She’s doing it again."

"Yes."

"And he’s completely oblivious."

"Yes."

Kael sighed. "We’re doomed."

"Probably," Lena said, rubbing her forehead.

Felix turned toward them. "Why are you two whispering?"

"Nothing!" they said, in perfect unison, and he gave them both a suspicious look before letting it go.

Seraphina just smiled quietly to herself, unbothered by any of it.
