Chapter 1265: 1265. I Won’t Just Invade the Reaches. I’ll Bring the Entire World With Me
"Now the foundation answers to you," Lustia continued, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial murmur that seemed to vibrate through the very bones of the bathroom. "Those ancient doors that once stood as impenetrable barriers?"
"They are nothing more than doorways now."
"They exist only because the man holding the key, my apostle, walks among them."
"What was once a fortress has become a hallway, and it makes reaching you... infinitely easier."
Rex narrowed his eyes, his mind already cataloging the implications.
"Easier," he repeated, the word tasting like ash. He knew that in this world, nothing came without a price. "Easier isn’t free, Lustia."
"No. It is anything but free." Her smile twisted into something wry, something almost pained. "This intrusion costs me a tremendous amount of essence."
"I am tearing at the seams of reality with bare hands, Rex."
"I cannot do this often, perhaps once a year, if I am exceptionally careful and ruthless with my resources."
"And I have no intention of wasting such precious energy on idle pleasantries."
She leaned closer to the glass, her burning eyes scanning his face as if reading the micro-expressions written in his flesh.
"So, I chose this moment."
"A morning where you were alone..."
"A morning where you were calm..."
"A morning where you had just tasted the sweetness of victory... I thought you might appreciate the timing."
A muscle jumped in Rex’s jaw. "You watched."
"I always watch." She said it with such casual nonchalance that it was impossible to tell if she was mocking him or simply stating an immutable truth of her existence. "I am the observer, Rex."
"I see the blood you spill and the wills you break."
Her expression shifted then, softening into something dangerously close to genuine admiration. "Congratulations, by the way."
"Valentina Von Starlight. The woman who sat atop the world like an eternal monument, never once deigning to look down at the insects beneath her feet."
"The untouchable kingdom has finally been breached, the throne has been desecrated, and the headmaster herself is carrying your seed."
"You made the impossible look... effortless. And I enjoyed every second of it."
A pleased, almost hungry little sigh escaped her lips as she watched him. "I will admit, seeing her broken at your feet... it made me proud."
"I did what any man in my position would have done," Rex said flatly, refusing to give her the satisfaction of seeing him preen. "I took what was mine."
"You did it better than I expected."
"That is why I am proud." Her voice lost its melodic teasing.
The warmth drained from her features as quickly as it had appeared, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp focus. She straightened her posture within the confines of the mirror, the amber and crimson light in her hair intensifying until it cast harsh, jagged shadows across the marble.
"But I did not break through the veil of reality to celebrate your conquests."
The temperature in the room seemed to plummet. The air grew still, charged with the kind of tension that precedes a cataclysm.
"Which brings me to the part I actually came for."
Rex did not answer immediately. He simply waited.
Over the months of their twisted partnership, he had learned the cadence of her divinity. Lustia never rushed.
She never stumbled into her purpose. She approached the truth like a predator circling prey with a deliberate, deceptive aimlessness that made the tension in the air almost unbearable before the killing strike landed.
"Aethelgard has fallen under the shadow of Xerollion," she said, her voice carrying the weight of a funeral dirge. "The city is yours... and of course... The Underlayer is also yours."
"The Apostle network has been systematically dismantled, severed at every vital artery."
"The only man capable of stitching them back together—the only one who could have sparked a true resistance—is lying in some filthy corridor with a hole punched through his throat."
She paused, letting the image of the dying rebel hang between them like smoke. "So tell me, my apostle."
"Now that you have built your throne upon a mountain of corpses, what comes next?"
"Will you sit here in this gilded cage and savor the stillness, or have you already begun to imagine what lies beyond these walls?"
Rex didn’t flinch at the grim assessment. He leaned back against the edge of the marble basin, letting the biting cold of the stone press through his skin against his lower back.
The question wasn’t a surprise; it was an inevitability. He had been turning the answer over in his mind for days, weighing the logistics of empire against the hunger of his own ambition.
Hearing it voiced aloud by a goddess only served to crystallize his intent.
"I have no intention of letting Aethelgard stagnate," he said, his voice cold and pragmatic. "A conquered city that sits motionless begins to rot from the inside out."
"Rot breeds resentment, and resentment breeds rebellion."
"Resentful people become dangerous after eighteen months."
"I won’t give them the time to learn how to hate me properly."
He shifted his weight, his mind moving through the pieces of his new world like a grandmaster surveying a chessboard. "Mordecai will handle the daily administration."
"He understands the machinery of power, and he’ll execute it under Pavellia’s supervision."
"She’s the only mind in that entire council that isn’t clouded by sentimentality or incompetence."
"She doesn’t need me breathing down her neck to maintain order."
His fingers drummed a slow, deliberate rhythm against his bicep. "Cassandra will take command of the military apparatus and rewrite the training doctrine."
"I want soldiers who don’t just follow orders but who understand that disobedience is a death sentence."
"The new laws and tax structures will be broadcast immediately, exactly as I laid them out."
"I want the rules to be so absolute that no one can claim ignorance as an excuse."
He looked directly into the burning gold eyes in the mirror. "As for me... I won’t be staying."
"Aethelgard is my base, not my prison."
"I’m going to leave this island and systematically dismantle every kingdom in Erosyne, following the exact sequence I promised Celestina."
"Valdric Sovereignty first," he continued, his gaze hardening. "Then the Thornweald Collective."
"The Aurelian Compact next. Then the Sable reaches, and Solmordia last."
Lustia’s lips curled upward. A genuine spark of amusement lit her features. "You told her that order on purpose."
"She needed something to fear," Rex replied with a shrug that carried no remorse. "I didn’t give her a threat; I gave her a schedule."
"It’s more terrifying when the monster has a calendar."
His inner thoughts raced, calculating the strategic inevitability of his path. ’Fear is a tool, but timing is a weapon.’
"It also happens to be the most logical path," he added, his tone shifting to one of pure tactical calculation. "Valdric has the strongest standing army and the most rigid organization in the continent."
"By taking them first, I decapitate the only force capable of mounting a coordinated counter attack against the others."
"Once Valdric falls, the Thornweald Collective becomes worthless."
"Their druid federation is too spread out, too decentralized; without a major power to fear, they will fracture into tribal infighting before I even reach their borders."
He paused, the cold satisfaction of his plan settling in his gut. "The Aurelian Compact controls the most prestigious magical institutions."
"They are a resource too valuable to destroy but too dangerous to leave independent."
"I will absorb their knowledge and their mages into my own ranks. And by the time I reach the Sable Reaches, a territory so unmapped it might as well be another planet, I will have the combined resources of the other three kingdoms behind me."
"I won’t just be invading the Reaches; I’ll be bringing the entire world with me."
