Chapter 1212: 1212. Surrender Means Complete, Surrender Means Unconditional

Valentina moved like a ghost haunting her own body. Every step she took was a visible agony, each footfall accompanied by a wet, ragged wheeze.

Haaa... wheeze... haaa...

Her legs trembled violently, the muscles spasming from the residual trauma of near asphyxiation.

One hand remained pressed against the bruised, purple column of her throat, not just for comfort, but as if she were physically holding her own voice inside her body, terrified it would shatter before she could finish.

Behind her, the sound of scraping stone announced Morwenna’s arrival. Morwenna had dragged herself upright, swaying like a tree in a hurricane.

One arm was clamped tight around her own ribs, fingers digging into the flesh where bone had likely splintered beneath the surface.

CRUNCH. GRIND.

Neither woman looked at the other; there was no time for comfort, no room for sisterhood in this moment of annihilation. Their eyes were locked on the masked nightmare standing over the broken remains of their last hope.

Xerollion turned his head. The movement was slow, serpentine, and utterly unnerving.

His raised hand remained poised in the air, the violet-black energy still coiled around his fingers like a hungry viper.

VREEEEEE.

He didn’t look angry; he looked patient. He looked like a predator who had decided to pause his meal simply to hear the final whimper of the prey.

"Speak, Valentina," he said, his voice carrying easily through the charged air. "You’ve interrupted a very precise moment of closure."

"What could possibly be worth that?"

Valentina swallowed hard, the motion clearly painful. She drew in a breath that sounded like tearing parchment.

"Aethelgard surrenders."

The words hung in the air like poison gas. For the soldiers watching, the word was worse than a death sentence. It was the sound of their history dissolving.

Decades of pride and centuries of magical lineage and martial honor collapsed in a single syllable. The headmaster, the strongest mage the city had ever known, was speaking the language of defeat.

"Stop this bloodshed," she pleaded, her voice gaining a desperate, raw edge that scraped against the stone walls. "Please... I am begging you."

"Don’t kill him... Don’t kill what’s left."

Xerollion lowered his hand slightly, but he did not extinguish the energy. Instead, he let the violet glow cast upward across his mask, making him look like a demon rising from hellfire.

"Surrender," he repeated.

He said it softly, tasting the syllable as if it were a rare wine. "A fascinating concept..."

"But let us be very clear, Valentina... Let us remove any delusions of grandeur that your noble heart might be clinging to."

He stepped closer to her, the magical pressure between them making the air hum with static.

BZZZZT.

"You understand what that word truly means, don’t you?" his voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. "This is not a truce."

"This is not a tactical pause... This is not a temporary ceasefire to allow your people to regroup and return next season with larger armies and prettier banners."

"Surrender means complete. Surrender means unconditional."

"From this moment forward, every soul in Aethelgard belongs to me."

"Every spell, every blade, every child’s breath—it all becomes my property..."

"Do you comprehend the magnitude of what you are offering?"

Valentina’s eyes glistened with unshed tears, but she did not flinch. The fire of her conviction burned through the terror.

"I understand exactly what it means," she snapped, her voice cracking but holding firm. "I have led this city’s defense for longer than most of these soldiers have been alive."

"I have seen empires rise and fall on the strength of a single promise."

She stepped forward, placing herself between the monster and the broken construct, a shield of flesh against a storm of magic.

"I am telling you, in front of every soldier standing here, in front of every witness to this atrocity Aethelgard yields."

"We yield to you." Her chest heaved as she fought for air. "Whatever terms you name, we will discuss them."

"Whatever price you set for blood, gold, souls, or magic, we will find a way to pay it."

"Just... stop."

"She speaks for the Starlight family," Morwenna’s voice cut through the charged air.

It was rougher than Valentina’s sandpaper on silk, but it carried the unshakable weight of ancient bloodlines. "And she speaks for the Nightwing household."

"Whatever authority remains standing in this godforsaken corridor stands behind what she just said."

Morwenna took a staggering step forward, her fingers still pressed white knuckles against her fractured ribs.

CRACKLE.

A small sound of grinding bone echoed from her torso as she moved, but she didn’t flinch. The two most powerful women of Aethelgard, broken, bleeding, and exhausted, had just placed their necks under the blade.

"We yield," Morwenna repeated, her eyes fixed on Xerollion’s mask with a defiance that refused to die even as her body failed. "Take what you want."

"Take the city. Take our magic. Just... spare what remains."

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the corridor. It wasn’t the silence of peace; it was the silence of a tomb.

Every remaining soldier, both the defenders of Aethelgard and the nightmare forces that had torn through them, held their breath. The only sound was the distant, wet dripping of synthetic fluid from Rex’s shattered chassis and the labored breathing of the wounded.

DRIP... DRIP... DRIP.

Behind Valentina, a young soldier collapsed against a pillar. A sound escaped him—a low, broken, keen one that wasn’t quite a sob and wasn’t quite a laugh.

It was the sound of complete psychological annihilation, the exhausted wail of a man who had fought for everything he believed in, only to watch it all burn to ash in a single afternoon.

Xerollion remained motionless, a statue of violet shadow. He stood over the wreckage of Rex Rexilion, the construct’s body sparking weakly beneath his boots.

BZZZT... SPARK.

Through the twisted metal and the exposed circuitry, the broken hero lay helpless.

Xerollion’s gaze remained fixed on Valentina. She was kneeling now, her forehead nearly touching the blood-stained stone, tears carving clean paths through the grime on her face.

She was pleading for the life of a puppet, a construct built from memories and stolen data. She was begging for the salvation of something she believed was a man, unaware of the fundamental deception at the heart of its existence.

’How deliciously tragic,’ Xerollion thought, his mind swirling with cold amusement. ’She offers her soul to save a ghost.’

’She surrenders her kingdom to preserve an echo of a man who never truly existed.’

’The irony is more exquisite than any spell I have ever woven.’

His raised hand continued to pulse. The violet-black energy coiled around his fingers like living serpents, humming with a malevolent hunger that seemed to vibrate in the very marrow of everyone present.

VROOOOOOOOOOOOM.

The magical pressure was so intense that several soldiers began to cough up blood as their lungs struggled against the supernatural weight.

HACK... COUGH.

The world seemed to contract, narrowing down to this one point: the masked god, the broken hero, the weeping women, and the terrible choice about to be made. The entire universe felt as though it were holding its breath, suspended on the razor’s edge of a single syllable.

Xerollion’s lips parted. The energy at his fingertips flared one last time, casting his shadow across the kneeling Valentina like the wings of a carrion bird.

"Very well," he whispered, and the words carried the finality of a guillotine blade falling.
