Chapter 1192: 1192. The Fall of the Golden Apostle

The violet-black energy at Xerollion’s fingertips reached its breaking point. It didn’t explode; it didn’t roar.

Instead, it condensed into a single, impossibly thin needle of absolute annihilation.

SHIIIIIIIIIIING.

The energy left his fingertips in one clean, surgical line. It crossed the final few inches between them faster than any human eye could register, slicing through the air with a sound like silk tearing.

It passed through Apollo Brightsoul’s throat with a precision that was more terrifying than any messy slaughter. There was no spray, no arterial fountain, just a small, cauterized dark mark where the violet black light had passed through his vertebrae, severing his spine and his life in the same microsecond.

But Xerollion was not done with his prize.

As the blade of energy severed the flesh, Xerollion’s other hand shot forward, palm open. "Mine."

VROOOOOM WHIRRRRR.

A different kind of magic ignited something deeper, more ancient, and infinitely more cruel. His palm pressed against Apollo’s chest, and suddenly, the golden fire that had defined the Apostle’s entire existence began to leak out.

It wasn’t blood; it was a shimmering, ethereal essence that screamed without making a sound. Through the sheer force of Soul Manipulation, Xerollion reached past the physical armor and the broken bones, grasping the very core of Apollo’s being.

Apollo’s eyes flew open one last time, not with pain, but with the recognition of his own soul being forcibly evicted from his body. The golden light flickered violently, fighting against the encroaching violet darkness.

With a wet, spiritual THWIP, the essence was wrenched free, coiling around Xerollion’s arm like a captured star, pulsing with the fading rhythm of a dying god.

Then came the final, brutal punctuation.

With a casual flick of his wrist, Xerollion’s free hand moved in a horizontal arc. A blade of compressed shadow manifested for a heartbeat, and with a sickening CRUNCH SLICE, Apollo’s head was severed completely from his shoulders.

The corridor around them had already been reduced to something barely recognizable as a passage. Sections of the ceiling hung in loose, cracked slabs, and the torchlight from the natural crystal veins flickered unevenly where the stone itself had been fractured by the accumulated violence.

Into that wrecked, half-lit space, the single sound of Apollo’s body meeting the floor arrived with an outsized, terrible clarity.

Xerollion released his grip.

The headless corpse of Apollo Brightsoul, the Apostle of Life, the hero of Aethelgard, fell the short distance to the corridor floor.

His body landed without ceremony, one arm folding beneath him at an angle that no longer mattered to a body that could no longer feel. The severed head rolled a few feet away, its eyes still glassy with the shock of its own departure.

THUD.

The sound was quiet, almost apologetic, entirely wrong for the weight of what it represented. It carried further through that dead silence than any scream could have.

The golden light was gone.

The hero was dead.

And the soul, the only part of him that could still feel agony, was now trapped in the fist of the monster who intended to make eternity a torment.

For a fraction of a second, nobody moved. The world seemed to have stopped spinning, held captive by the horrific image of the fallen light.

Then the corridor broke apart into chaos.

It didn’t begin with a roar or a charge. It started as a single, inhuman wail from somewhere deep in the third rank of Aethelgard’s formation, a sound stripped of language, a raw vocalization of pure psychological collapse.

That sound acted like a spark in a powder keg. Within seconds, the sound spread outward in every direction at once.

The disciplined ranks of Aethelgard dissolved into a writhing mass of broken men. Soldiers dropped to their knees with wet THUDs, their weapons clattering to the stone like discarded toys.

Men who had stormed battlefields and survived sieges simply folded, their minds snapping under the impossible weight of seeing their god-touched champion reduced to meat and bone.

Valentina’s voice rose above the cacophony a heartbeat later.

"Apollo... no... Apollo." Her voice cracked violently in the middle of his name.

The iron-willed matriarch, the pillar of the city, finally shattered. Her rigid composure gave way entirely as her knees buckled; she stumbled forward, catching herself against the shoulder of a nearby soldier who was too numb to even notice her weight.

Morwenna pressed both hands over her mouth, her knuckles white, her eyes wide and glassy with a thousand-yard stare. She had survived thirty years of political assassination attempts and shadow wars, but she found that none of it had prepared her for this kind of visceral, spiritual annihilation.

In the second rank, a seasoned captain who had held his position through the entire duel simply sat down where he stood. He didn’t retreat; he didn’t flee.

He simply ceased to function, his sword still clutched in a white-knuckled grip as he stared at nothingness. Near him, a young soldier began reciting something under her breath, a rapid, frantic litany of prayers or fragments of scripture.

Her lips moved in a desperate rhythm, but no sound came out, only the visible tremor of her jaw.

On the Underlayer’s side, the reaction carried a different, more unsettling texture. There was no cheering yet.

Even the hardened demons and bloodthirsty orcs who had trained for months for this exact moment found themselves momentarily stunned.

They stood in a state of quiet, predatory awe, like wolves watching a lion demonstrate the true meaning of slaughter.

Cassandra’s arms, folded with practiced indifference throughout the fighting, dropped slowly to her sides.

Gorvasha’s grip on his hammer tightened until the leather wrap creaked audibly under his palm, his eyes fixed on the corpse with a grim fascination.

And then, there was Rex.

Farther back in the formation, Rex, the architect of this nightmare, tore free of the two soldiers restraining him.

He did it with a burst of strength that looked, to every horrified eye watching, like pure, desperate grief overriding physical limitation.

He threw himself forward, screaming Apollo’s name with a raw, ragged horror painted across his features. It was a masterpiece of deception, the finest piece of theater he had performed all day.

He ran toward the carnage with the desperation of a man losing his soul, and the performance landed perfectly on an audience too shattered to notice anything except the shape of their own shared devastation.

In the center of this storm of grief, Elliot Von Starlight stood frozen.

His eyes were locked on the crumpled, headless shape of his friend’s body. Something behind his pupils was changing visible, terrifying degrees.

His irises seemed to contract into pinpricks of molten fire while his jaw set into a hard, unnatural line. Whatever was breaking inside him went deeper than grief; it was the sound of something ancient and terrible cracking open.

It was the specific, total detonation of a man who had never touched the outer edges of his own capacity for rage, suddenly being handed the entire ocean of it at once.

"APOLLO!!!"

The scream tore out of him like a physical blade. It didn’t just echo; it tore through the air, vibrating the very stones of the corridor.

And then, the light came.

BOOOOOOOM.

White light exploded outward from every inch of his body. This wasn’t the controlled, disciplined glow of his usual heroic strikes; this was an uncontrolled supernova of raw, unmitigated fury.

The pressure wave hit like a physical hammer. Evelyn, who had been standing close enough to reach for his arm, was thrown backward off her feet as if struck by a battering ram.

She scrambled up, gasping for air, her eyes wide with terror as she watched her closest friend transform into something she no longer recognized.

The boy was gone. In his place stood something primal, something incandescent, something that looked ready to burn the entire world down just to spite the darkness.
