Chapter 1133: 1133. The Air Here Tastes of Too Much Death Already

"Your strategic instincts have grown considerably sharper since the day I first met you," Rex said, his voice carrying a rare note of genuine appreciation. "Back when you were less concerned with grand design and more focused on trying to put a fist through my mask."

Cassandra didn’t flinch. Instead, her lips curved into a dry, dangerous smile, the kind that had once made lesser demons flee in terror.

"Don’t sound so surprised, Xerollion... I was the finest general Mordecai ever commanded."

"I learned how to read a battlefield long before you came along to dismantle his empire and claim everything he held dear."

Her tone carried its familiar sardonic edge, but as she looked up at him, the fire in her eyes softened into something more complex, something almost vulnerable. "Still... some days, it feels surreal."

"The Demon Queen, who once drew blood simply by speaking her name, is now standing here in the dark, waiting for a mortal man’s signal like any other soldier."

Rex leaned closer, his breath ghosts against her cheek. "You aren’t waiting for a signal like any other soldier, Cassandra."

"You aren’t a pawn on this board... You built half of this trap yourself."

A flash of genuine pride ignited in her expression, replacing the melancholy. "I suppose that’s true."

She allowed herself one more heartbeat to savor the acknowledgment, letting the moment of connection linger before the cold reality of the coming massacre rushed back in. Her features hardened instantly, the Demon Queen reasserting control as she pulled away from his touch.

"But pride won’t kill Aethelgard. Only blood will."

The brief personal respite vanished as quickly as it had appeared, folded away behind walls of discipline and steel.

Rex left Cassandra to her cold vigilance and moved deeper into the pulsing throat of the corridor. His next stop was Gorvasha.

The air around her felt heavier, charged with the raw, geological energy she commanded. Standing beside her, Rex offered praise that lacked Cassandra’s sardonic bite; there was no teasing here, only the direct, sincere acknowledgment of a predator recognizing another’s perfect kill strike.

He spoke of the structural integrity of the kill zones and the flawless channeling of the ambush and the tactical brilliance of turning solid stone into a weapon.

Gorvasha accepted the words not with a smile, but with the grim pride of her people. She thumped a closed fist once against her own sternum, a dull, hollow sound that echoed like a funeral drum against the crystal walls.

"This corridor will be remembered in the songs of the deep," Gorvasha said, her voice carrying that characteristic low growl that seemed to vibrate the very stone beneath their feet. "Not as a passage, but as a tomb."

"This is where Aethelgard’s arrogance finally meets its limit... where their bones will become part of our foundation."

"I will not let you down, Lord Xerollion."

Rex offered her a final moment of recognition, his hand resting briefly against her armored shoulder, a gesture of solid, unshakable trust, before continuing his journey through the deadly architecture of the Underlayer.

The further he moved, the more the atmosphere shifted. The air grew humid, slick, and strangely sweet-smelling.

He was approaching the contingent commanded by Viscaria. As he drew near, he saw her slime kin soldiers, translucent, undulating masses of lethal protoplasm shifting restlessly, their forms rippling in unconscious sympathy with their mistress’s emotions.

Viscaria herself was a vision of fluid danger, but as Rex approached, her usual composure fractured. Her form shifted subtly, her surface tension wavering with visible unease.

"You’ll be careful," Viscaria said, skipping any pretense of formality.

The words came out raw, almost desperate. Her hand drifted instinctively, almost protectively, to the visible, swollen curve of her belly, the life growing within her a fragile miracle amidst a sea of impending slaughter.

"I know your reputation..."

"I know you have walked through hells more vicious than this and emerged unscathed."

"But I still worry. The air here... it tastes of too much death already."

Rex didn’t offer empty platitudes. He knew she needed truth, not comfort.

He stepped into her space, closing the distance until the heat of her shifting form pressed against his armor. He reached out, resting his palm gently against the swell of her stomach.

Beneath his touch, he could feel the faint, miraculous warmth of her life force a stark contrast to the cold, mineral death surrounding them.

"I always come back," Rex promised, his voice dropping to a private murmur that barely carried past her.

His thumb traced a slow circle over her skin. "I have survived everything the world has thrown at me because I have something worth returning to."

"I return for you, Viscaria... And I return for the future we are carving out of this darkness together."

For a moment, the war, the trap, and the thousands of soldiers waiting to spill blood faded into the background. There was only the heartbeat of the woman before him and the silent vow of the man who would burn the world to protect it.

Rex made his final circuit through the labyrinthine kill zone, the oppressive atmosphere of the corridor growing heavier with every step. The air seemed to thicken, saturated with the unspoken promise of violence.

His last stop took him to a shadowed alcove tucked away at the corridor’s jagged edge, a vantage point that offered a perfect, unobstructed view of the surface reserve forces.

There, shrouded in the darkness like a living ghost, waited Lilith.

She barely had time to register his presence before she was moving, throwing her arms around him with a desperate, fierce affection that nearly knocked the wind from his lungs. Her embrace was a lifeline, a reminder of humanity in a place designed for annihilation.

"You never have time for me anymore," she whispered against his chest, her voice carrying that familiar dramatic flair she used as both armor and weapon.

But beneath the theatrical complaint, Rex could hear the genuine ache of it—the fear of a woman who knew exactly how easily a man could be swallowed by war. "Everyone else gets their precious moment of connection before this stupid war starts."

"I get shoved into this godforsaken corner to babysit a reserve force that probably won’t even be worth the effort of killing."
