Chapter 1123. Everything Will Be Exactly as I Have Designed It to Be
Chapter 1123: 1123. Everything Will Be Exactly as I Have Designed It to Be
Rex reached out, his movements deliberate and unhurried, as if any sudden motion might shatter the fragile equilibrium of the room.
He pressed his palm against Mara’s belly first. Through the soft fabric of her dress, he felt the faint, miraculous heat of new life, a pulse that felt impossibly delicate compared to the iron-hard certainty of his own heartbeat.
Then he moved to Marceline, holding the contact longer than necessary, letting the physical connection anchor them both.
He wanted them to feel the solidity of his presence, to understand that his words weren’t empty air but were forged in the same steel that would soon be dripping with blood.
Mara’s breath hitched, a small, broken sound that tore through the quiet. Marceline’s eyes finally glazed over, the tears she had been fighting with such stubborn pride threatening to spill over.
"Come back," Marceline whispered.
The words were simple, stripped of all pretense, raw and bleeding with terror.
"I will," Rex said.
And when Rex made a promise, it wasn’t a hope; it was a tactical certainty.
He had already run ten thousand simulations of the coming slaughter in his mind, dissected every possible variable, anticipated every blade and every spell, and in every single one of those futures, he walked away from the carnage intact.
He didn’t just intend to survive; he intended to dominate.
He forced himself to stay for another quarter hour, performing the most difficult act of his life: pretending to be ordinary.
He teased Mara about Garrett’s increasingly absurd fussing over the pregnancies, Garrett still operating under the delusion that he was the sole architect of this new life, and he listened to Marceline ramble about minor renovations for the inn’s eastern wing.
These domestic trivialities felt almost obscene when measured against the scale of the genocide he was preparing to unleash, yet he clung to them.
When he finally rose to leave, the embrace that followed was devoid of any performance. There was no Silver Tongue here, no calculated charm.
It was a simple, desperate clinging. As he stepped back out into the sharp morning light, Rex allowed himself one moment of private honesty: this fragile, mundane peace was exactly why he was willing to become a monster.
He would burn the world to ashes if it meant these two could continue to argue about wallpaper and bread.
The walk from Silver Rest Inn to the Starlight household took nearly an hour. Rex used every second of it to reassemble his armor.
His mind became a fortress of logistics: Elizabeth’s confirmations, Valentina’s timelines, and the lethal adjustments Cassandra and Gorvasha had made to the Underlayer corridors.
By the time his boots struck the cobblestones of the Starlight courtyard, the warmth of the kitchen had been pushed deep into the recesses of his mind, banked like an ember beneath layers of cold, killing intent.
Lily and Diana were waiting near the courtyard gate. The sight of them struck a chord in Rex that he rarely allowed himself to acknowledge.
Both were clad in full combat gear of dark leather and reinforced steel, with weapons strapped to thighs and backs. They looked less like the women he knew and more like the instruments of war they were becoming.
Seeing them braced for a conflict that would dwarf any skirmish they had ever endured produced an unfamiliar flicker in Rex’s chest. It wasn’t anxiety he didn’t believe in, but it was something adjacent: a protective, predatory attentiveness.
Diana’s posture was a study in disciplined readiness; her shoulders were squared, her jaw set in that familiar, uncompromising line.
Yet, there was a telltale tightness around her eyes, a minute tremor in her grip on her weapon that betrayed the nerves beneath the steel.
Lily was worse. Usually the emotional heartbeat of their group, she had pulled her features into a mask of grim seriousness that looked painful on her face.
Through the faint, telepathic thread that connected them, Rex could feel it: not words, but a low, subsonic hum of terror vibrating through her consciousness.
It was the sound of someone standing on the edge of an abyss, waiting for the wind to push them in.
’They’re afraid,’ Rex thought, his own pulse steadying into the rhythm of a predator approaching the kill. ’Good... Fear sharpens the senses.’
’But I will not let that fear turn into hesitation.’
’In three days, hesitation will mean broken bones and severed arteries.’
’And I will not let them become carrion.’
Rex crossed the remaining distance between them, his boots ringing against the stone with a finality that seemed to punctuate the morning air. He stopped inches from them, his presence filling the space like a gathering storm cloud.
"You both look ready," he said, but his eyes weren’t offering praise; they were assessing them like weapons being inspected before a siege.
Diana didn’t flinch, but the way her fingers twitched against the hilt of her sword told him everything his eyes couldn’t see.
"We’re ready," she said, but the words lacked their usual iron conviction.
There was a fracture in her voice, a question hanging naked in the air between them. "This isn’t like the others, Rex."
"This isn’t some raid on a bandit camp or tracking some rogue beast through a canyon."
"This is... this is different."
"This is an actual war."
"It is an actual war," Rex agreed flatly.
He saw the way Lily flinched at the bluntness of it, the way her telepathic hum spiked into something sharp and jagged. There was no point in feeding them the poison of false hope; false hope was what got soldiers killed when the first blade found their throat.
"There will be no glory here... Only survival and slaughter."
His voice dropped lower, taking on the commanding authority of a general who had already seen the corpses. "Listen to me carefully."
"Stay close to your assigned formation."
"Do not break rank for pride or panic."
"If the fighting turns against you, if the corridor starts collapsing under the weight of magical backlash, if the enemy lines break in ways that don’t match the briefings, or if you see something that makes your blood run cold, pull back immediately."
He stepped closer, forcing them to meet his gaze. "Do not wait for a formal order."
"Do not wait for me to call you back."
"If your instincts are screaming at you to run, you run."
"I would rather have you alive and disobedient than dead and dutiful, rotting in some tunnel while I’m busy elsewhere."
Diana studied him, her eyes narrowing as she searched for any crack in his armor.
"You sound very confident," she noted, her voice laced with a bitter edge, "that we’ll be facing something that requires that kind of caution."
"Almost as if you’re expecting the worst."
"I sound like someone who has spent months dissecting every possible atrocity this war could produce and building a solution for each one," Rex said, and it was the most honest thing he had said all morning.
His mind was already moving past them, picturing the Underlayer: the sound of grinding stone, the wet squelch of boots in arterial spray, the wet crack of ribs breaking under enchanted steel, and the screams of men being torn apart by things that shouldn’t exist.
"Rex." Diana stepped forward, closing the distance until she was almost touching his chestplate.
Her question cut through his tactical detachment like a blade through silk, striking directly at the core of the unspoken tension between them. "Are you certain everything will be alright? Like really-really alright...?"
"Because if you’re lying to us now, we won’t survive what’s coming."
’Will everything be alright?’ Rex thought bitterly as he looked into her desperate eyes. ’Nothing will be alright.’
’The world will bleed.’
’The ground will drink.’
’But I will make sure you are the ones standing on top of the mountains of meat when the dust settles.’
"Everything will be exactly as I have designed it to be," he said aloud, his voice steady as stone, though his heart thudded with the grim knowledge of the violence he was about to unleash.
