The Lust Grimoire: I Steal Magic By Fulfilling Her Desires
Chapter 94: Shattered Illusions
The shadow spear hovered an inch above Kaelen’s collarbone, its tip vibrating with a high-frequency hum that set the prince’s teeth on edge. The condensed dark mana radiated a cold so absolute it burned, biting through his leather tunic and freezing the sweat on his skin. But the physical chill was nothing compared to the absolute, suffocating void opening in his chest.
A disposable pawn. A cheap, brass key.
The Silver Trim’s metallic, synthesized whispers echoed in the damp confines of the Sunken Coliseum, bouncing off the ruined terraces like a judge’s gavel. Kaelen stared at the featureless obsidian mask, searching for any sign of a bluff, any hint that this was simply another test of his loyalty. He found nothing but the abyss. His entire world—his righteous rebellion, his secret destiny, the grand narrative where he saved his father’s kingdom from unseen traitors—shattered like cheap glass, leaving behind a horrifying, pathetic reality.
He had almost started a continental war, not to save his people, but because a shadow syndicate had recognized his profound, desperate vanity and weaponized it.
A wet, strangled sound tore its way out of Kaelen’s throat. It wasn’t a battle cry. It was the sound of a boy whose ego had been entirely atomized, leaving only raw, cornered panic.
“No,” Kaelen choked out, tears of absolute humiliation mixing with the freezing mud on his face.
“Accept your irrelevance, little prince,” the Silver Trim said, his voice devoid of even the mockery from moments prior. It was purely transactional now. “Your death will serve as a final distraction. The King’s hounds will spend weeks scouring the lower wards for your killer while we position our real pieces.”
The executioner’s arm tensed, preparing to drive the shadow spear down.
Something inside Kaelen broke completely. It was a primal, feral snap. He didn’t think about his Royal Guard instructors, or his footwork, or the proper angle of deflection. Driven purely by the explosive adrenaline of imminent death and blinding shame, the prince threw his weight backward, violently twisting his torso to avoid the downward thrust.
The shadow spear grazed his shoulder, tearing through the hardened leather of his tunic as easily as wet paper, slicing a shallow, freezing gash across his deltoid. Kaelen didn’t feel the pain. He scrambled backward through the icy mud like a wild animal, his fingers closing around the hilt of his fallen longsword.
With a raw, ragged scream that tore his vocal cords, Kaelen lunged forward.
He channeled every ounce of his dormant mana into his blade. A weak, flickering aura of pale blue and gold ignited along the royal steel, the hallmark of the kingdom’s baseline enhancement magic. He threw his entire body weight behind a horizontal slash aimed directly at the Silver Trim’s neck, a strike meant to decapitate.
The Equinox operative did not even take a step back.
He didn’t draw a weapon. He simply raised his left hand, turning his palm outward.
The air in front of the Silver Trim warped. A dense, thick tendril of pure shadow snapped out of the gloom beneath his robes, moving with the speed and fluidity of a striking viper. It coiled around Kaelen’s glowing blade mid-swing.
CLANG.
The impact rang out like a hammer striking an anvil. Kaelen’s forward momentum was instantly arrested, the shockwave of the sudden stop traveling up his arms and jarring his shoulders to the bone. The pale blue aura surrounding his sword sputtered and died instantly, entirely devoured by the suffocating density of the Tier 8 dark-affinity core.
“Sloppy,” the Silver Trim rasped, his metallic voice laced with absolute boredom. “Your center of gravity is entirely pitched forward. You attack like a drunken brawler, not a prince.”
With a casual flick of his wrist, the Silver Trim sent a pulse of kinetic energy through the shadow tendril. The force traveled down the royal steel and slammed into Kaelen’s hands. The prince yelled in pain as his grip was violently broken, the sword wrenched from his fingers and thrown into the dark.
Before Kaelen could even register the disarm, a second tendril of shadow lashed out from the operative’s cloak. It struck the prince squarely in the chest, a blunt-force impact that felt like being hit by a galloping warhorse. Kaelen’s ribs cracked. He was lifted entirely off his feet, flying backward through the air before crashing down into a deep puddle of freezing, stagnant water.
Mud filled his mouth. He gasped for air, his lungs refusing to expand.
“Is this the pinnacle of the royal bloodline?” the Silver Trim mocked, slowly gliding across the mud toward where Kaelen lay thrashing. The darkness beneath his boots seemed to eagerly swallow the moonlight. “Generations of selective breeding, unparalleled access to the finest magical tutors on the continent, and you shatter like porcelain the moment you face the real world.”
Kaelen spat a mouthful of bloody water, forcing himself onto his hands and knees. His entire body screamed in agony, the cold seeping into his bones. He pushed himself up, staggering blindly toward the dark figure, throwing a pathetic, uncoordinated punch aimed at the obsidian mask.
The Silver Trim didn’t even use his shadow tendrils this time. He simply stepped inside Kaelen’s guard and backhanded him across the jaw with a heavy, velvet-gloved hand.
The physical blow was devastating, augmented by passive dark mana. Kaelen spun like a top, crashing hard into the remnants of a crumbled stone pillar. He slid down the rough rock face, his vision swimming with dark spots, blood pouring freely from a deep split in his lower lip.
“You lack conviction, Your Highness,” the Silver Trim lectured, his synthesized voice echoing across the silent arena. “You swung a sword because you were angry, not because you intended to kill. You rely on the weight of your title, believing the universe will simply bend to your authority. But down here in the dark? A crown is just a heavy piece of metal that makes it easier to break your neck.”
Kaelen tried to push himself up, but his arms trembled and collapsed. His royal aura, which he had so proudly flared during his sheltered palace sparring sessions, was completely smothered, unable to even manifest a spark beneath the oppressive, suffocating gravity of the operative’s presence. He was utterly helpless. A boy playing at war, finally cornered by a true monster.
“It is almost tragic,” the Silver Trim murmured, coming to a halt just two feet from the broken prince. He raised his right hand toward the cracked ceiling of the Coliseum.
The ambient shadows in the arena surged toward his palm. They compressed and folded over one another, condensing from a fluid state into solid matter. The dark mana shrieked, a terrible, tearing sound as it violated the physical laws of the world. Within seconds, a massive, jagged guillotine blade of pure, compressed darkness formed above the operative’s hand. It was six feet long, its edge impossibly thin, radiating a corrosive aura that began to melt the falling raindrops before they even touched it.
“Look upon the reality of the world you so desperately wanted to change, Kaelen,” the Silver Trim commanded, stepping into Kaelen’s fading line of sight. “Look at it, and know that you die as nothing more than a footnote in Equinox’s ascension.”
Kaelen tilted his head up. His vision was blurring, the metallic hum of the executioner’s blade vibrating in his cracked ribs. The sheer magical pressure radiating from the weapon was so intense it began to fracture the slate beneath him, spiderwebs of cracked stone branching outward from the Silver Trim’s boots.
There was no grand realization. No hidden reserve of willpower. Only the crushing, absolute certainty of his own death, and the pathetic realization that he deserved it. Kaelen closed his eyes, his breathing stuttering to a halt, waiting for the dark to fall.
High in the ruined spectator box, the violet shimmer of the Tier 2 Sensory Manipulation shattered like a pane of brittle glass.
Arthur dropped the spell. He didn’t dissipate it gently; he violently severed the mana connection to his core, instantly freeing his internal pathways for a massive, instantaneous surge.
Next to him, Seraphina gasped, physically recoiling as Arthur’s aura—which had been suppressed to a dead, icy void for the past hour—violently erupted into the physical world.
Time seemed to instantly dilate.
Arthur’s mind descended into the freezing, calculating abyss of the Tier 7 Frost Sovereign. The baseline mana density of his core, already tempered and stretched by the sheer volume of high-tier Grimoires he had integrated, flared with blinding intensity. He bypassed the standard somatic casting requirements entirely, forcing raw, glacial mana directly into his musculature and his drawn steel blade.
Down in the pit, the Silver Trim’s obsidian mask twitched upward, his hyper-sensitive magical awareness finally registering the impossible, terrifying spike in mana density directly above him.
It was too late.
Arthur moved.
He didn’t jump from the spectator box; he detonated off it. The kinetic force of his launch shattered the massive stone ledge he had been sitting on, sending hundred-pound chunks of masonry tumbling into the dark.
He crossed the massive, two-hundred-foot expanse of the Sunken Coliseum in a singular, continuous flash of glacial step. He moved faster than gravity could drag him down, his boots finding microscopic, instantaneous footholds on the very moisture in the air. As he moved, the temperature in the coliseum plummeted from a bitter chill to absolute, lethal zero. A trail of flash-frozen air blossomed in his wake, a jagged line of white frost hanging suspended in the darkness.
Down below, the Silver Trim realized the danger instantly. He abandoned his monologue, his arm snapping down to drive the massive shadow-guillotine through Kaelen’s neck. The dark blade descended, tearing a vacuum through the air, less than an inch from severing the prince’s head.
BOOM.
The shockwave of displaced air hit the arena floor like a meteor strike.
A deafening, thunderous explosion of conflicting mana tore through the Sunken Coliseum. The impact ripped the stagnant mud and water from the ground in a perfectly circular, fifty-foot radius, throwing it violently into the terraced seating. The sheer acoustic force of the collision shattered the remaining intact glass in the high ceiling grates, raining deadly shards down into the pit.
Kaelen was thrown backward by the concussive blast, tumbling head over heels until he slammed into the outer retaining wall. He lay there, deafened, his ears ringing with a high-pitched whine, unable to comprehend what had just happened.
Slowly, agonizingly, Kaelen forced his eyes open, blinking through the swirling clouds of dust, pulverized stone, and freezing mist that now choked the arena floor.
At the epicenter of the crater, standing directly between Kaelen and the Equinox operative, was Arthur.
The bodyguard did not look like the dry, sarcastic swordsman who had mocked Kaelen’s footwork in the palace courtyard. He looked like a localized natural disaster.
Arthur was crouched in a low, perfectly balanced stance. His plain steel longsword was raised in a high guard, but the metal was no longer visible. It was entirely encased in a thick, jagged layer of blinding, absolute-zero ice, glowing with a terrifying internal blue light.
The ice-coated blade was locked dead center against the Silver Trim’s massive shadow guillotine.
The two conflicting magical forces screamed against one another. The dark mana tried to corrode and consume the ice, eating away at the edges with a hissing, boiling acid sound. But Arthur’s Tier 7 Frost Sovereign continuously fed raw, freezing mana into the construct, instantly regenerating the ice faster than the Tier 8 darkness could destroy it. Sparks of violet and blue energy cascaded off the point of contact, scorching the cratered earth beneath their feet.
The Silver Trim gripped his shadow blade with both hands, his midnight robes whipping wildly in the localized arcane hurricane. For the first time, the operative’s posture betrayed shock. The featureless obsidian mask was tilted down, staring at the mercenary who had materialized out of the ether to block a lethal strike with brute force.
Arthur slowly straightened his legs, his boots grinding against the fractured stone. Steam rolled off his shoulders as his overheated core violently clashed with the freezing air of his own magic. He looked at the Silver Trim, his eyes flat, predatory, and entirely devoid of fear.
“You talk too much,” Arthur said, his voice easily cutting through the roaring storm of their deadlocked weapons.
With a brutal, singular twist of his wrists, Arthur parried the heavy shadow blade upward, breaking the deadlock and sending the Equinox operative sliding backward across the frost-covered earth.
