The Luna's Revenge: Chosen as his breeder, Born to rule
Chapter 142: Prison Escape
Draven’s POV
I had made up my mind to do the killing and I meant it. I wanted to strike the shepherd so the sheep would flee. So I planned to do it at dinner ... when everyone was seated, guards relaxed, food on the table ... and then we would escape.
"When I kill the boss, don’t even hesitate to burst those doors open so we can leave," I told Lucas, and he agreed. We all agreed.
Dinner time came and we were set. The wolves watched us the way they always did ... like we were objects to be claimed, things to be owned. We kept eating and minding our business. Surprisingly, none of them came to our table.
I had been banking on the fact that one of them would come over so I could use that confrontation to get to the boss, but they didn’t. So I had to go to them.
I stood up and walked straight to their boss’s table like I had every right to be there. There were about a dozen of them sitting around it.
"Hey, I need a bagel," I said to the wolf closest to me.
He looked at me like he thought I was high. I tapped him on the shoulder and repeated myself. "I said I need a bagel."
He stood up and got in my face.
"Tell your stupid boss to give me the one on his plate," I said.
That set the whole table off. The boss’s wolves rose to their feet, ready to tear into me. The boss held them back. He stood up himself and came to me. "What did you just say?"
"You heard me. I want that bagel on your plate."
One of his wolves threw a punch from behind. I let it land, used the momentum to stagger forward, closed the distance between me and the boss, and drove my small knife into him. I made it look like I was falling against him.
Nobody knew what had happened until the boss slumped against the table and blood began spreading across the front of his shirt.
By that time, Lucas and the rest had already made their move. I broke into a sprint toward them and we blew through the front door. But it wasn’t clean ... Viper’s wolves came after us hard.
He died so damn cheaply. I couldn’t believe that man had been their leader. Shit.
We had to cut through every corner and work through every gap we could find so we wouldn’t be seen. The wolves had already alerted the authorities, and the sirens started blaring almost immediately.
The sound was deafening. It rattled something in my chest, but I kept running. We all kept running.
"Where do we go next?" I asked one of Lucas’s wolves ... the one who had spent time studying the prison’s layout while I was busy planning Viper’s death.
He led the way. We came up on a post where an officer was supposed to be stationed.
He wasn’t there. And even if he had been, I wasn’t about to kill a freaking officer. I had enough charges stacked on me already without adding that to the list.
We forced the door open. One more office stood between us and freedom.
We searched fast, looking for the key to the exterior door.
"She must have taken it with her when they went looking for us," Lucas said.
We started searching for something else ... anything we could use to break through. I spotted a sledgehammer on the side and grabbed it. I swung it hard against the lock until it gave way.
The officers came rushing in, but by then we were already gone. We hit the last security wolf posted out front with a punch to the face and ran.
I never thought escaping from prison would actually look like this. But I had done it. I hadn’t let the fear of what was waiting on the other side stop me.
They didn’t stop chasing us though. They pushed announcements through speakers and megaphones ... wanted criminals, report on sight, the whole thing. They drove us out into the open.
But we weren’t hiding in any corner or crouching in a bush. We ran headlong. They must not catch us. That was the one thought keeping my legs moving. Because if they had caught us, it was back to prison. Another sentence. More time swallowed up by concrete walls and metal bars.
What did they expect from criminals?
Even if they had managed to keep other men locked down, there was no way they were ever going to keep me. I had walked a long road to get here. Crime had gotten into me and changed me into a different person entirely. There was no cage built yet that was going to hold that.
We were out of sight after about ten minutes of running flat out.
We hadn’t eaten a proper meal in days. So naturally, we went to get food the best way we knew how.
We spotted a supermarket ... all six of us. We were about to walk in when we saw our faces on the TV screen inside. Wanted criminals. Report on sight.
We stepped back outside immediately. We weren’t about to get caught after pulling off an escape like that.
"Lucas, would you do us the honours?" I asked him.
He agreed without hesitation. He tore a strip of cloth, tied it around the lower half of his face so only his eyes showed, and slipped inside like it was nothing. A lady wolf was on duty. Lucas robbed her clean and walked back out unharmed.
She sounded the alarm, but that was nothing I hadn’t heard before.
We ate and kept moving. I couldn’t wait to call Jade and tell her I was out. I imagined she was somewhere with Rex and his wolves, doing whatever it was they did.
We gave each other a high five.
"What happens from here?" one of Lucas’s wolves asked. He already knew we couldn’t go back to the life we had before ... the life of a made criminal.
"Let’s hang around until we figure out the next move," Lucas said.
We followed our leader.
I had done what I said I was going to do. And I felt damn good about it.
"Hello Jade ... before you say anything, we escaped," I said when she picked up.
"Really? Send me your location and I’ll come to you," she said.
I pinpointed exactly where we were and told her to be careful.
