The life of robin flint

Chapter 51: The Healing of Body and Heart

  • Next Chapter

When consciousness returned to Robin Flint after two days in the dark, fevered void, it did not come with the sharp clarity of his internal logic systems. It came through the soft, gentle warmth of human touch.

Robin opened his eyes. The high stone ceiling of Winterfell’s guest chambers was illuminated by the flickering, amber light of a small peat fire.

He tried to shift his arms, but found himself completely pinned.

Curled tightly against his right side was eight-year-old Sansa, her face buried into his torn linen sleeve, her small hands clutching his uninjured forearm with a fierce, subconscious grip. On his left, nine-year-old Lyra lay snoring softly, her small chin resting heavily on his shoulder.

Across his boots sat ten-year-old Robb Stark, fast asleep with his head propped on his knees, while Jon Snow sat curled on a wool blanket at the foot of the bed, his dark eyes wide and watchful even in slumber.

The children had refused to leave his side for forty-eight hours. They had slept beside him on the heavy featherbed, conviction settled firmly in their young minds that their presence alone kept the cold shadow from taking Robin away.

Robin looked down at them.

The cold, stony vault that had slammed shut inside his chest during the trial began to thaw. His internal bio-monitors registered the severe physical toll—four splinted fingers, two cracked ribs, deep contusions across his torso, and depleted neural reserves. Yet, looking at the sleeping faces of the children, the agonizing ache in his soul receded into a quiet, manageable peace.

He gently raised a splinted hand, his thumb lightly stroking Sansa’s auburn hair.

Promises in the Quiet

The heavy oak door creaked open, and Lady Lynesse Hightower—Ser Jorah Mormont’s young, beautiful southern wife—stepped into the room carrying a basin of warm water and fresh linen bandages.

She paused in the doorway, a soft, tearful smile gracing her refined features as she took in the sight of the bed covered in sleeping children.

"You are awake, my Lord," Lynesse whispered softly, setting the basin on the bedside table.

"Lady Lynesse," Robin rasped, his throat dry as desert sand.

Jon Snow immediately stirred, his eyes snapping open. "Robin!" Jon gasped, scrambling to his feet. "You're awake!"

Jon's outburst instantly woke Robb and Lyra. Sansa gasped, sitting up rapidly and throwing her arms around Robin's neck with a tearful sob, completely ignoring the splints on his hands.

"You were so still, Robin!" Sansa wept into his shoulder. "We thought... we thought you weren't coming back!"

"I am here, Sansa," Robin murmured softly, his calm, steady voice instantly soothing the room. "I am unbroken."

Lynesse leaned out the heavy door, her melodic voice echoing down the corridor. "Jorah! Lord Stark! He is awake!"

Within moments, heavy boots thundered down the hallway. Ser Jorah Mormont and Lord Eddard Stark rushed into the solar. Ned’s grey eyes, usually so guarded and severe, softened with profound, paternal relief the moment he saw Robin sitting up against the headboard.

"Robin," Ned breathed, stepping to the side of the bed and placing a heavy, warm hand on the young lord's shoulder. "The Old Gods be praised."

A Journey North

While Maester Luwin checked the bindings on Robin’s broken fingers, Ser Jorah Mormont stepped forward, leaning against the bedpost with a solemn, thoughtful expression.

"You have given too much of yourself to the North, Robin," Jorah said quietly, his deep voice carrying a tone of sincere, brotherly concern. "You have built their cities, fed their babes, and bled on their weirwood roots. If you stay in Flint's Finger or Winterfell now, the tension with Karstark and Umber will only fester like an untreated wound."

Ned looked at Jorah, frowning slightly. "What do you propose, Jorah?"

"Let the boy travel," Jorah suggested, looking directly at Robin. "Let the Northern lords stew in their own pride and rot in their own guilt for a season. Flint’s Finger is built on such flawless systems that it practically runs itself without a lord present for a few moons."

Jorah gestured warmly to his wife. "Lynesse and my mother can stay at Flint’s Finger to oversee the high household and keep little Lyra safe and happy. Robin needs time away from council rooms, politics, and ungrateful lords. He needs to let his body and his heart heal."

Lyra looked up, her dark eyes darting between Jorah and Robin. "I get to stay with Lady Lynesse? She promised to teach me how Essosi silk is woven!"

"If Robin agrees," Lynesse smiled softly, patting Lyra's head.

Ned considered the recommendation carefully. As Warden of the North, he knew Jorah was right. The northern houses were deeply ashamed, and Robin’s presence in the south of the realm would only prolong the political storm.

"It is a wise counsel, Robin," Ned agreed gently. "Where would you go?"

Robin looked out the narrow stone window toward the northern horizon. His mind instantly recalled the intelligence brought by the wildling refugees—the dropping temperatures, the empty burial mounds, the rising nightmare in the deep frost.

"I will go North," Robin stated, his voice steady, calm, and clear. "To Castle Black."

Ned blinked, taken aback. "The Wall?"

"Lord Commander Jeor Mormont needs to understand what is coming," Robin explained, his grey eyes resolute. "The intelligence from beyond the Wall cannot be ignored. I will ride north to speak with the Old Bear, inspect the defenses of the Night's Watch, and see the edge of the world with my own eyes."

Jorah nodded slowly, a look of immense respect in his eyes for his father's domain. "My father will welcome you with open arms, Robin. There are no political games at the Wall—only honest men facing the cold."

Robin looked around the room—at Ned, Jorah, Lynesse, and the four children clinging to his blanket. For the first time in days, a faint, genuine smile touched his lips.

"Then it is settled," Robin said softly. "I ride for the Wall."
