The Legendary Method Actor
Chapter 350: The Understudy Protocol: Level Five
The misty forest whipped past them as Ray and Svane maintained a relentless sprint. Perched securely on Ray’s shoulder, Nox dug his tiny claws into his master’s tunic to steady himself against the jarring momentum.
As they ran, the void-malkin’s voice echoed through Ray’s mind.
Master, when you and the big metal man were killing those foul dogs... I was watching the dark thing. Its blank face changed. Every time a dog died, it looked like it was screaming. It wasn't just mad. It was pure anguish and hate.
Nox projected, his tone unusually serious.
It is a commander watching its elite vanguard get slaughtered, Nox. It is bound, its abilities are suppressed, and its ambush failed entirely. It is simply angry that it has been outplayed and can do nothing about it.
Ray responded as he processed the familiar’s observation.
Nox’s tail flicked in annoyance. He thought about his master’s explanation. It made sense on the surface, but his innate feline instincts hummed with a strange, dissonant warning. It felt like there was something vastly deeper to that emotion, something fundamental that his master was overlooking. But unable to articulate exactly what that feeling was, Nox simply let out a mental huff and decided to leave it be.
"My Lord… the ridge… dead ahead."
Svane called out, his heavy breathing cutting through the fog.
Ray gave a sharp nod. He reached inward, tapping into the Grizzled Commander's passive ‘Predator’s Intuition.’ The hyper-sensory ping radiated outward, sweeping the Whispering Hills. The massive, chaotic cluster of danger was still miles behind them, stalled near the location where he cast the aether-infused Entangle spell that had turned the terrain into a writhing jungle. They have increased their distance now.
A moment later, the trio crossed the invisible boundary of the Aetheric Null-Veil.
The shift in the environment was immediate. The heavy damp fog of the Whispering Hills instantly thinned.
Nox’s golden eyes widened. To his highly sensitive, aether-tuned vision, the interior of the array looked incredibly strange. The ambient magic of the air was "thin and stable," almost hollow. He couldn't see the usual heavy, floating lumps of aether that permeated the forest. Looking down, he noticed the perimeter of dimly glowing runes carved into the dirt. They were acting like a magical vacuum, actively and aggressively sucking the ambient Aether out of the enclosed space to power the field.
Master, what is this weird place? And why are we stopping?
Nox asked, thoroughly confused by the artificial deadzone.
It is a sanctuary, a sensory blindspot. The beast pack tracks via energy signatures and magical scent. As long as we stay within the vicinity of these glowing runes, we do not exist to them. They won't be able to find us.
Ray replied back mentally.
Nox didn't fully comprehend the complex runic mechanics, but he grasped the core concept: monsters couldn't see them here. He chalked it up to another one of his master's eccentric magic tricks and relaxed his posture.
Svane marched toward the center of the array and unceremoniously dropped the bound dark figure onto the ground. The Vanguard let out a heavy, rattling sigh, the sheer physical toll of utilizing the explosive Aegis Hand-to-Hand combat technique finally catching up to his muscles. He found a large, flat stone nearby and sat down heavily.
Pulling a thick leather waterskin from his own bag of holding, Svane took a long, desperate gulp.
"Water, my Lord?"
Svane asked as he wiped his mouth with the back of his armored hand and extended the leather waterskin toward Ray.
"Thank you, Svane, but I brought my own."
Ray said, producing a pristine metal canteen from his own spatial bag and taking a measured sip.
Svane nodded, not minding in the slightest, and continued to rehydrate.
Ray moved to a nearby stone and sat down. Before tending to his own exhaustion, he activated the Serene Cultivator's ‘Aetheric Perception’ skill. His eyes glowed faintly as he peered through the dark figure's corrupted stone armor, checking its internal status. The seven localized nodes along the creature's spine were burning like miniature suns. The Primordial Aether he had injected was completely self-sustaining, aggressively pushing the black corruption back toward the creature's core.

Ray nodded in satisfaction. He didn't need to inject any more energy; the creature was thoroughly neutralized.
Deciding to capitalize on the safety of the Veil, Ray shifted into a lotus position. While his experimental hybrid-casting technique was a success, he refused to let his guard down and rely entirely on unrefined ambient magic. He needed his core at absolute peak capacity. He closed his eyes, regulated his breathing, and initiated the Ashvane Method.
Seeing that the humans were settling in for a long rest, Nox quickly shimmied down Ray's arm.
Do not disturb me, Master. Digesting takes absolute focus,
Nox transmitted through the tether. Without waiting for a reply, the void-malkin dove smoothly into Ray’s shadow, disappearing entirely to sleep off and digest his feast.
Ray ignored the familiar's grumpy sign-off. As the volatile, golden aether began its "shatter and rebuild" cycle through his meridians, Ray simultaneously accessed his system interface. He knew he had missed the full details of a notification during the chaos of the chase.
He pulled up the notification logs and read the glowing blue text:
[CUMULATIVE SKILL MASTERY THRESHOLD MET: 15+ CAPSTONES ACHIEVED]
[SYSTEM FEATURE UPGRADED: ‘THE UNDERSTUDY PROTOCOL to Lvl. 5’]
[The Understudy Protocol (Level 5)]
[1. Understudy Capacity Expansion. Total Slots: Increased from four (4) to five (5) designated Understudies.]
[2. Resonant Link Communication (Advanced)] [Existing Sub-Function Upgraded: The link has achieved advanced stability, expanding effective telepathic transmission range.]
[NEW RANGE: 25,000 meters (25 kilometers).]
[NEW FEATURE: ‘The Callback’ (Two-Way Initiation): Designated Understudies may now independently initiate a Resonant Link with the Host.]
[COST: Initiating a link from the Understudy's side incurs Cognitive Strain on the Understudy, scaling with physical distance from the Host.]
[3. Theater of the Mind (Evolution: The Duo Protocol)]
[Existing Sub-Function Upgraded: The internal simulation suite has been optimized to handle multiple external consciousnesses.]
[CAPABILITIES: The Host can now invite up to two (2) Understudies simultaneously into the Shared Tactical Replication Protocol (Shared TRP) for coordinated training, group sparring, and shared tactical simulations, etc.]
[NEW FEATURE: ‘Aetheric Anchoring’ (Environmental Efficiency): The Shared TRP can now "scavenge" energy from the surrounding environment. In regions of high ambient Aether (e.g., The Whispering Hills, The Genesis Crystal Chamber), the cognitive and Aetheric cost to the Host for maintaining the simulation is reduced by 30% to 60%.]
[SYSTEM NOTE: To achieve Understudy Protocol Level 6, the Host requires 6 additional Capstone Skills to reach the next cumulative threshold (Total Required: 21).]
Ray’s lips curled into a genuine smile. This wasn't just a minor upgrade; it was a massive strategic paradigm shift.
In the ambient presence of his mind, his personas were already reacting.
Commander: "A twenty-five-kilometer secure communications network with two-way initiation, we no longer have to blindly check in on our assets. They can report enemy movements directly to command in real-time. This fundamentally alters our unit cohesion."
The Grizzled Commander stated, his voice echoing with deep, tactical satisfaction.
Courtier: "And the capacity for a fifth asset! A perfect tool. The ability for our pieces on the board to initiate contact when the political winds shift in the capital is invaluable. Information is only useful if it arrives on time."
The Scheming Courtier practically purred from the shadows.
Scholar: "Forget the radios, look at the simulation suite! Multi-consciousness rendering! We can throw Kaelen and Eliza into the same simulated battlefield to train their synergy! And the Aetheric Anchoring... Oh, it’s beautiful! By scavenging the ambient aether in the environment, we can run the Shared TRP for hours without draining cognitive stamina and your core!"
The Eccentric Scholar shouted, vibrating with academic ecstasy.
Ray let the satisfaction wash over him as he continued to meditate, letting the Ashvane Method aggressively refill his life-force.
An hour passed in absolute silence.
Ray’s eyes fluttered open. The Grizzled Commander’s Predator’s Intuition had just updated the ping location of the beast pack.
"They broke through."
Ray announced quietly.
"The trap failed?"
Svane asked as he looked up from his boulder.
The Vanguard had spent the past hour also in a seated meditation, painstakingly circulating his internal energy to soothe the chaotic, knotted meridians caused by his earlier magical backlash. It was a slow, punishing process, but he was making steady progress. He recognized the distant, focused look in his Lord's eyes.
"It bought us the hour we needed. I don't know how they broke through that. But they are disorganized. The pack has splintered into three separate search groups. One of them is doubling back toward where we killed their scouts."
Ray clarified, his mind mapping the distant sensory pings.
"They are blind, they do not know where we are. What are your orders, my Lord? Do we hold the ridge?"
Svane asked, understanding Ray's superior perception.
Ray thought for a moment.
"I will monitor their movements. Once I can ascertain that all three groups are sweeping in the wrong directions and the path is clear, we will abandon the ridge and retreat directly back to Greywood Keep."
He responded as he weighed their tactical advantages.
Svane let out a long, heavy breath of relief. He had been fully prepared to die defending this patch of dirt, but an ordered retreat was music to a battered Vanguard's ears. Taking advantage of the downtime, Svane nodded once, closed his eyes, and sank back into his deep meditation, determined to fully stabilize his internal energy circulation before the long march home.
Another hour ticked by.
Ray remained perfectly still, his mind acting as a localized radar. Based on the erratic, sweeping trajectories of the three groups, it was obvious they were searching by scent and sight, totally unable to lock onto Ray's Aetheric signature.
Thirty more minutes,if they continue on these vectors, the corridor back to Greywood Keep will be wide open.
Ray thought as he made a decision.
But just as the thought formed, the sensory data in Ray's mind violently shifted.
All three groups stopped moving.
A moment later, they began to move again. But the erratic, sweeping patterns were gone. All three groups pivoted sharply. They were now moving in total synchronization, and their trajectory was locked on a singular location.
They were heading straight for the ridge.
