Chapter 337: What Scares a Behemoth

  • Next Chapter

The Alpha froze, its massive jaw dropping slightly. It stared up at Ray, visibly shocked that the ‘small human’ spoke its language with perfect, dominant inflection.

But the gorilla’s primitive hierarchy logic quickly overrode its surprise. In the wild, the biggest, strongest creature was always the leader. It assumed the small, grunting human up high was merely a noisy subordinate.

The Alpha completely dismissed Ray. It turned its massive head back to Svane, dropping to its knuckles, and directed a rapid series of highly aggressive grunts and sharp postures entirely at the Gold Aegis.

The translation automatically fed into Ray’s brain:

“Drop weapon. Step aside. We walk here.”

Down in the ruins, Svane obviously did not speak gorilla. He had no idea he was currently involved in a high-stakes diplomatic negotiation. All the veteran Aegis saw was a giant, mutated beast acting aggressively toward him and ignoring his Lord.

Ray tried one more time. He shifted his posture again, grunting loudly and slapping his own chest to draw the Alpha's attention.

Through the filter of the Beast-Speak skill, his primitive vocalizations and body language carried a direct, conceptual translation:

"Me speak for metal giant! We no bite. We stay here. You pass safe!"

The Alpha violently rejected the communication. It bared its massive fangs, beating its chest in a frantic, aggressive rhythm that screamed absolute denial.

The beast’s roaring response translated bluntly and fiercely in Ray's mind:

"No! Small thing no lead! Metal giant danger! Move now, or troop crush!"

The Primal Naturalist chimed back into Ray's mind, his usual cheerful demeanor suddenly gone.

"Careful, mate, Look at his eyes. Look at the way the troop behind him is shifting their weight. He's agitated... anxious. I've seen that exact look on cornered crocs back in the mangroves. He's not trying to conquer this territory. He's running from something."

The Primal Naturalist warned, his voice dead serious.

Ray’s eyes narrowed.

He activated the Primal Naturist’s ‘Primal Empathy’ skill. The invisible barrier between Ray's mind and the beasts below vanished. A sensory wave of pure emotional intent immediately hit him.

Beneath the Alpha's towering rage, beneath the territorial chest-beating and the bared fangs, was a deep, overwhelming current of absolute terror. The Alpha was terrified. The juveniles huddled in the center of the troop were shivering. The gorillas weren't trying to claim the ruins at all; they were desperately fleeing from whatever lay deeper in the Whispering Hills, and Svane just happened to be standing in their escape route.

Suddenly, the Alpha's patience snapped.

Driven entirely by the panic of whatever was hunting them from behind, the Alpha decided it could no longer wait for the metal giant to move. It roared a deafening, frantic command.

The entire troop of giant, aether-mutated gorillas surged forward, charging straight at Svane like a furry, crystalline avalanche.

"They are charging, my Lord!"

Svane roared.

The Gold Aegis braced for impact. A massive, blinding surge of mana flared around his heavy shield. He lowered his center of gravity, fully prepared to take the kinetic impact of a dozen giant beasts head-on to protect his Lord's position.

From the high ground, Ray’s eyes went completely cold.

If they crashed into Svane, it would be a bloodbath. Even if Svane killed them all, he would likely take severe injuries from the sheer weight of the troop. Ray couldn't allow his vanguard to be trampled, nor did he want to slaughter a troop of animals that were simply running for their lives.

He needed to break their charge. He needed to establish absolute, undeniable dominance.

System, initiate Concurrent Partial Immersion, layer in: The Grizzled Commander

Ray mentally commanded as he stepped to the very edge of the stone ledge and activated the Grizzled Commander’s ‘Command Aura’ and Primal Naturalist’s ‘Apex Predator's Aura’ skillsand unleashed his intent.

An invisible, crushing wall of pure, primal dominance slammed directly down onto the charging troop.

The momentum of the charging giant gorillas was instantly snuffed out, as if they had collided headfirst with a physical wall of solid lead.

The effect of Ray’s combined Command Aura and Apex Predator's Aura was devastatingly absolute. It wasn't a blast of concussive magic; it was a sheer, conceptual weight forged by the Primal Naturalist’s instinctual dominance and the Grizzled Commander’s battlefield violence.

The younger, smaller gorillas in the front of the charge were immediately forced down onto their knuckles. Their thick arms trembled violently, their faces pressed toward the dirt as they whined, entirely unable to bear the pressure of Ray’s killing intent. Behind them, the massive adults staggered, their knees buckling under the suffocating atmosphere.

Sitting directly on Ray’s shoulder at ground zero, Nox was entirely protected from the physical, crushing weight by Ray’s pinpoint control. However, the void-malkin still felt the sheer, conceptual terror radiating off his master.

Nox shadowy ears pinned completely flat against his head.

Okay, jeez, master. I just said he was loud! You don't have to go full doom-lord on him. Alright, message received, you don't have to be mad about it. I am just gonna go to sleep. Call me when the scary situation stops.

Nox projected, his telepathic voice suddenly very small and deeply defensive.

With a tiny, nervous squeak, Nox melted right off Ray's shoulder and dove safely into the depths of Ray’s shadow.

Down in the ruins, Svane felt the peripheral edge of the aura.

A cold sweat broke out across the back of the Gold Aegis's neck as he instantly recognized the terrifying, bone-chilling pressure. It was the exact same apex suppression Ray had unleashed during the events at Starr Manor. Yet, this time, Svane noticed something profoundly different. Ray possessed absolute, pinpoint control over it. The crushing weight flowed seamlessly around Svane, leaving him completely unimpeded while flattening everything in front of him.

Seeing the massive beasts halted and struggling to stand, Svane’s veteran instincts took over. He shifted his stance, his broadsword igniting with a blinding flare of his mana, ready to strike at the paralyzed front runners.

"Stand down, Svane!"

Ray’s voice cracked like a whip from the watchtower.

Svane’s blade halted an inch from a juvenile’s neck. Without a word of hesitation, the Gold Aegis pulled his weapon back, resting it against his shield, though he kept his vigilant eyes locked on the paralyzed gorillas.

Ray looked down at the Alpha Silverback. His amiable, negotiating posture was completely gone. He stood perfectly straight on the crumbling stone ledge, looking down at the giant beast with the cold, absolute authority of a true ruler.

The Alpha stared up at the small human boy. Its primal instincts screamed in absolute terror. The creature finally realized the horrifying truth: from what he felt from the young boy’s aura he knew that it came from a true Apex Predator.

Thick beads of sweat formed on the Alpha’s forehead. Although he was a distance away from Ray, he still felt the heavy pressure of the aura and struggled against the crushing weight, its massive chest heaving.

But then, the Alpha looked back over its massive shoulder, peering deeply into the dark, misty woods from which they had just fled. A violent shudder ran through the giant gorilla’s spine. Whatever was chasing them through the trees terrified the Alpha far more than the Apex standing on the watchtower.

Driven by the frantic, desperate logic of a cornered beast, the Alpha forced itself to stand. It beat its chest against the crushing pressure of Ray's aura preparing for a suicidal charge the Alpha unleashed a defiant, thundering roar.

ROOOAAR!

Before the Alpha could take a single step forward, Ray shifted his stance, flaring his aura to its absolute limit, and pushed his intent directly into the beast's mind through the Beast-Speak skill.

Ray's conceptual warning translated into blunt, undeniable terms:

"You pass safe. We no hunt. But you strike metal giant? I crush whole troop. Nothing left."

The Alpha froze. The cold, mechanical certainty in the translation cut right through its panic. The beast looked back at its shivering juveniles, realizing that throwing a punch here meant the possible absolute extinction of its family line.

The fight drained out of the Alpha. It dropped its aggressive posture, sinking heavily onto its knuckles in a gesture of total submission.

It let out a series of low, rumbling grunts. Ray’s Beast-Speak automatically translated the beast’s response. It was an acceptance of terms, but it carried a chilling, desperate warning:

"We no strike. We pass.”

Ray got what the Alpha said and he gave a sharp, single nod.

The Alpha barked a short, guttural command to its troop.

Seeing the submission, Ray instantly deactivated the aura skills. The crushing, suffocating aura vanished from the courtyard. The gorillas gasped for breath, coughing and staggering to their feet as the invisible weight lifted.

A familiar translucent blue screen immediately chimed in Ray's vision.

[SKILL APPLICATION DETECTED]

[EVENT: NON-KINETIC PACIFICATION OF AETHER-MUTATED FAUNA (CONCURRENT IMMERSION)]

[PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: INSPIRED]

[ANALYSIS: Host successfully executed a highly complex, dual-archetype psychological suppression. By layering the Grizzled Commander’s ‘Command Aura’ with the Primal Naturalist’s ‘Apex Predator's Aura’, the host generated a conceptual weight sufficient to shatter the morale of a numerically and physically superior force. The pinpoint execution of 'Beast-Speak' under extreme duress, combined with the precise spatial control of the suppression fields to exempt allies (Svane, Nox), demonstrates unparalleled mastery of intent projection and battlefield control. Largest mastery gain.]

[Apex Predator's Aura: +20%, Beast-Speak: +15%, Command Aura: +10% (CAPSTONE already reached, adding half of mastery gain to the next archetype skill 'Somatic Override ').]

Ray dismissed the notification with a flick of his eyes, keeping his attention on the valley floor.

Keeping a wide, highly respectful berth, the troop began to edge around the perimeter of the ruins. They moved quickly, sometimes their eyes would nervously look behind them as they bypassed Svane. The Gold Aegis kept his heavy shield raised, his posture highly vigilant, but he obeyed his Lord's command and did not strike.

The Alpha was the last to pass.

The towering, crystalline-plated behemoth paused at the edge of the clearing. It looked at the heavily armored giant holding the glowing sword, then slowly tilted its massive head back to look at Ray on the watchtower. It let out another a series of low, rumbling grunts.

“Many big dark monster coming. Eat flesh. We run. You no run? You eaten too."
