The Legendary Method Actor
Chapter 335: A Deep-Sea Atmosphere
The Eccentric Scholar practically shoved the Detective aside, his eyes manic behind his spectacles. He slammed a heavy, dust-covered tome onto the phantom table, sending up a cloud of phantom dust.
Scholar: "Our objective, The Greywood Domain Anomaly! Why did the Argent Hand try to seize House Croft?"
The Eccentric Scholar announced gleefully as he waved his hand.
A glowing, topographical map of the Whispering Hills materialized in the air. He overlaid it with an ancient, pulsing blue map of continental magic flows, the exact data Ray had stolen from the Royal Archives in Solhaven Academy.
Scholar: "Look at the intersection! This territory sits directly on top of a massive, ancient Leyline Node! A Class-A wellspring of pure energy!"
The Eccentric Scholar pointed frantically at a thick, pulsing blue line that ran directly beneath the Greywood Domain.
Ray nodded, reviewing the data. Finding an untapped Leyline Node was a monumental discovery. It was the exact same type of geographical phenomenon that had allowed Solhaven City to evolve from a standard regional town into a massive, kingdom-wide hub of arcane research and commerce.
Courtier: "But it isn't just the energy. The Argent Hand theorized that this Leyline powered an ancient civilization. They wanted this land to dig up whatever forgotten secrets are buried deep beneath the Whispering Hills."
The Scheming Courtier pointing at the geological footnotes.
Ray opened his eyes in the physical world for a brief moment, he got up and started to pace in his room. He looked up at the room's window and saw the jagged, towering peaks of the deep Whispering Hills in the distance.
Over the past two weeks, he had paid close attention to the Vance Merchant mercenaries and the local miners returning from the deep hills. They were bringing back chunks of what the locals called ‘Whisper Stone,’ ancient, pale masonry that was unnaturally light yet twice as durable as standard granite. It was the breadcrumb trail leading straight to the ancient ruins.
However, the deep hills were effectively a death zone for regular humans.
Ray’s mind flashed back to his very first day in this world. He remembered the visceral, paralyzing terror of the Fell Hound, a mutated, rotting beast that had nearly torn him to shreds before the Grizzled Veteran had seized control of his body and killed it.
Those mutant monsters still roamed the deep hills. From the debriefings Ray had quietly eavesdropped on in the courtyard, the mining expeditions only skirted the absolute outskirts of the hills. Even then, they occasionally encountered a Fell Beast. According to the veteran Vance mercenaries, it took a highly coordinated squad of ten to fifteen soldiers to put down a single Fell Beast without taking casualties.
Ray closed his eyes, dipping back into the council meeting just as the Primal Naturalist practically vaulted onto the phantom table, his eyes wide with adrenaline-fueled excitement.
Naturalist: "Crikey, mate! Ten to fifteen blokes just to wrangle one of those Fell Beasts! Now I am very curious, I feel like those beasts are absolute beauties!"
The Primal Naturalist grinned broadly, adjusting his phantom khaki hat.
Naturalist: "I reckon the ambient mana from the Leyline must be supercharging their biology into overdrive! We've gotta get out there and see 'em up close, really observe the mutation process in the wild! If we can just wrestle a big one to the ground, we could get a proper look at its gorgeous teeth!"
Ray sighed inwardly at the Primal Naturalist's complete lack of self-preservation, using the moment to assess his own combat readiness instead.
I am not weak like I was four years ago, with my reforged body, primordial mana, combat alchemy, and the combat arts I’ve mastered, my lethality is comfortably at the level of a Gold Aegis. I could execute a Fell Beast one-on-one with minimal effort.
Ray thought, looking at his hands.
Commander: "Do not confuse individual power with tactical invulnerability, boy. Surviving a duel in an open clearing is easy. But we are talking about exploring uncharted, underground ruins in a Class-A Leyline zone."
Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
The Grizzled Commander warned from the far end of the phantom table, his voice carrying the heavy weight of a thousand battlefields.
Commander: "Getting swarmed by a pack of mutated beasts in a tight, lightless corner is how arrogant, overconfident soldiers die. You are a scalpel, you strike fast and you strike hard. But if you get surrounded, your stamina will break before their numbers do. It would be entirely foolish to launch a scouting mission of this magnitude alone."
The Grizzled Commander continued as he leaned forward, placing his gauntlets heavily on the table.
Ray absorbed the reprimand without ego.
The Commander was absolutely right. I need an anvil to complement my hammer. I need someone who could hold a chokepoint against impossible odds while I analyzed and dismantled the threat.
Ray thought as he opened his eyes, the mental landscape fading away as he stared out at the jagged peaks of the Whispering Hills. The decision was already made.
He was going into the deep hills to uncover the secrets of the ancient Leyline, and he was taking his Gold Aegis with him.
The mid-morning sun had just begun to burn off the thick layer of mist clinging to the deep woods as Ray and Svane made their way up a winding, heavily overgrown mountain trail.
Ray was dressed lightly in his sturdy travel clothes, moving with a quiet, fluid grace. A few paces behind him, Svane marched with the heavy, rhythmic thud of a man clad entirely in his Gold Aegis armor.
"I must admit, I am glad you decided to join me on this excursion, Svane. But more than that, I am glad to see you have adjusted so well to the peaceful life at Greywood Keep. You seem quite at home."
Ray said, glancing back over his shoulder with an amused smile.
Instead of his usual stoic military acknowledgment, Svane let out a heavy, rumbling sigh that rattled deep within his chestplate.
"I am honored to serve, my Lord. However, I must confess I am mildly aggrieved you pulled me away this morning. I had just finished setting the primary load-bearing timbers for the eastern watchtower's roof. I truly wished to see the masonry finished today."
Svane grumbled, with a tone of genuine regret bleeding into his voice.
Ray shook his head, letting out a bright laugh. The fact that a kingdom-elite spellsword, a man capable of cleaving through entire infantry lines, was upset about leaving an unfinished repair project was endearing.
"The Keep is not going anywhere, Svane, and neither are the stonemasons. We are just going for a quick look around. You can get back to your roofing project before you know it."
Ray reassured him.
Svane snickered softly. His tone, however, shifted into something a bit more serious as he eyed the dense, ominous tree line closing in around them.
"Given what roams these deep woods, my Lord, I know exactly what kind of dangers lurk in the Whispering Hills. I am highly surprised Lord Alistair and Lady Eileen permitted you to leave the safety of the Keep's walls for a casual stroll."
Svane noted, resting a massive hand on the pommel of his sword.
"They didn't, at first, when I brought it up, my father adamantly insisted that if I wanted to visit the Ruinstone mining site, I had to take a fully armed cohort of Vance Merchant mercenaries with me."
Ray chuckled, batting a low-hanging fern out of his path.
"A sound tactical decision."
Svane agreed.
"Perhaps, but a loud, clumsy one. I managed to win the argument by playing the academic card. I told them this was purely a geological survey regarding the Whisper Stones for my coursework at Solhaven Academy. I promised him I was just going to look around, and most importantly, I reminded him I was bringing a Gold Aegis. He finally relented, under the strict condition that I am back inside the Keep before sundown."
Ray said as he smiled faintly.
They continued their trek deeper into the hills. The ambient temperature began to drop, and the canopy grew so thick it blocked out most of the morning light.
Suddenly, the shadow trailing behind Ray’s boots writhed violently.
Nox, the void-malkin, burst out of the darkness with an excited, trilling chirp that echoed directly into Ray's mind. The shadowy feline hit the dirt and immediately launched itself into the air, twisting gracefully as it began aggressively swatting and biting at the empty space, acting as though it were trying to catch invisible butterflies.
Ray stopped, his brow furrowing in surprise. As he watched the malkin play, he started to fell a sense of denseness in the surroundings.
System. Initiate Partial Immersion: The Serene Cultivator.
Ray’s mentally commanded as his eyes flashed with a serene, profound light as he activated the ‘Aetheric Perception’ skill.
Instantly, the mundane forest shifted into a vibrant, glowing spectrum of energies. Ray gasped softly. The ambient density in the Whispering Hills wasn't just high, it was absolutely suffocating. The air was so thick with raw, primordial energy that it had actually begun to condense. Physical, glowing blobs of pure aether drifted lazily through the air like deep-sea jellyfish.
Ray looked at Nox and realized the void-malkin wasn't just playing; it was hunting. It snapped its jaws around a condensed cluster of aether, swallowing the raw energy whole with absolute delight.
"Svane, do you feel any shift in the atmosphere?"
Ray asked, keeping his glowing eyes fixed on the environment.
Svane paused his heavy march. He closed his eyes, his brow furrowing in deep concentration beneath his helmet.
"I do, my Lord, The mana density here... it is incredibly oppressive. It feels as though I am walking underwater."
Svane nodded heavily, his voice strained.
Ray slowly deactivated the skill, letting the glowing world fade back into a mundane forest. He realized the fundamental, terrifying disparity in their strength ceilings. Svane was a kingdom elite, yet he could only perceive the heavy mana in the air. Only Ray, and his void-malkin—possessed the biological refinement required to see and interact with the higher-tier Aether.
"Stay sharp."
Ray ordered quietly.
They pushed through the final, dense thicket of the tree line and stepped out into a massive, open expanse.
