The Last Rule of Death
Chapter 63 - The Door It Opens
The stolen Claim tightened around Etzel’s boots.
Stone climbed his ankles.
Across the chamber, the faceless creature stood with one hand pressed to the floor.
Maerin’s ability.
Her territory.
Used by something that did not know her name.
Maerin stared at it.
“Give it back.”
The creature had no mouth.
The black object inside the broken dungeon core pulsed anyway.
DUNGEON NOTIFICATION
[STORED ABILITY STRUCTURE ACTIVE.]
Etzel watched the lines.
Not the creature.
Not the stone.
The lines.
Claimed Ground had always looked simple from outside. Maerin established territory. Within it, terrain responded to her intent.
But Etzel had fought beside her enough to know the visible effect was not the ability.
The visible effect was the result.
The actual structure was a relationship.
Maerin.
Ground.
Claim.
The foreign object had stolen the mechanism that allowed that relationship to exist.
And every time it used the stolen structure, it had to connect storage to manifestation.
A door.
Etzel smiled.
Sivenne saw it.
“I know that face.”
“What face?”
“The one you make before everyone else has a terrible afternoon.”
“That is unfairly specific.”
The stone reached his knees.
DK pulled once.
The Claim hardened around him too.
Sivenne’s blade remained dark.
Tessa held Arven upright.
Maerin was the only one doing nothing.
Not by choice.
Etzel looked at her.
“When it uses your ability, can you feel anything?”
“No.”
“Nothing?”
Maerin closed her eyes.
The creature extended its other hand.
A wall rose between Etzel and DK.
Maerin flinched.
“There.”
Etzel’s attention sharpened.
“What?”
“Pressure.”
“Where?”
She touched her chest.
Then lower.
Not physical.
Soul.
“It feels like someone pulling a thread that used to be attached to me.”
Etzel nodded.
“Good.”
Maerin opened her eyes.
“That does not feel good.”
“For us, it is.”
The creature moved.
Stone spears erupted from the floor.
Etzel twisted.
One cut his side.
DK shattered two with the flat of the Greatblade.
Sivenne jumped over another.
No abilities.
The black object waited.
It wanted them to panic.
Wanted expression.
Etzel refused.
“Maerin. Follow the pull.”
“I don’t have the ability.”
“You don’t need it.”
“What am I following?”
“The theft.”
She stared at him.
Then understood.
Not the ability.
The wound it left.
Maerin closed her eyes again.
The creature used Claimed Ground.
Every command pulled the stolen structure out of storage.
Every pull brushed against the place it had been torn from.
Maerin whispered:
“Left.”
Etzel looked.
The black object was in front of them.
“Not physically.”
“I know.”
She pointed at the creature.
“Through it.”
Etzel ran.
The Claim tried to lock him.
He did not fight the stone with power.
He stepped where the creature had already changed the terrain.
Existing movement.
Existing cracks.
No new command required.
The faceless head turned.
Etzel threw the spear.
Not at it.
At the black object.
The membrane snapped up.
Defense.
There.
A dark line appeared for less than a second between the creature and the core.
Storage to manifestation.
Witness reacted.

[Observed transfer path confirmed.]
Etzel’s spear struck the membrane and bounced away.
But he had seen enough.
“DK!”
The knight moved.
No Hellscript.
Just strength.
He ripped one foot free of the Claim.
Then the other.
The creature ordered the floor to close.
The dark transfer line appeared again.
Etzel pointed.
“There!”
DK swung.
The Greatblade crossed empty air.
For an instant, nothing happened.
Then the chamber screamed.
The transfer line became visible.
Black.
Thin.
Taut.
DK had not cut it.
But he had struck it.
The creature staggered.
Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
Maerin gasped and fell to one knee.
Tessa moved toward her.
“No ability,” Maerin said.
“I know.”
Tessa caught her physically.
The stolen Claim flickered.
Etzel recovered his spear.
“Again.”
The creature raised both hands.
The entire room responded.
Walls folded inward.
Floor tilted.
Stone pillars erupted.
The transfer line widened.
Etzel ran directly toward it.
Sivenne shouted:
“That is not a thing you can stab!”
“Most things become stab-able with commitment!”
He thrust.
The spear entered darkness.
Pain exploded through his arm.
Not physical.
A foreign structure touched Witness.
For one instant Etzel saw Claimed Ground from the inside.
Not Maerin’s memories.
Not her thoughts.
The architecture.
A declaration.
A boundary.
A recognized relationship between soul and place.
The foreign object had not copied it.
It had severed the recognition from Maerin and registered itself as temporary holder.
A thief changing the name on a deed.
Etzel understood the second flaw.
“It doesn’t own them.”
The chamber shook.
Maerin looked up.
“What?”
“It stores the permission.”
“What does that mean?”
“It can steal the key.”
Etzel pushed the spear deeper into the transfer path.
“But the lock still knows you.”
Witness flashed.

[Stored Ability Structure retains origin-signature.]
Maerin’s eyes widened.
Etzel shouted:
“Claim it.”
“I can’t.”
“Not the ground.”
The creature attacked.
DK intercepted.
Stone wrapped his sword arm.
Sivenne cut the stone manually.
Etzel kept the transfer path open with the spear.
“Claim the ability.”
Maerin stared at him.
“That is not how it works.”
“Today has been full of educational disappointment.”
She closed her eyes.
The black object pulsed harder.
SYSTEM ALERT
[STORAGE INTEGRITY THREATENED.]
Good.
Etzel smiled.
“Maerin. It still knows you.”
She put one hand against her own chest.
No System response.
No Claim lines.
Nothing.
Then she spoke.
Not to the dungeon.
Not to the System.
To the stolen thing.
“Mine.”
The creature froze.
The dark line snapped tight.
Maerin screamed.
The black object pulled.
Maerin pulled back.
Etzel saw nothing physical between them.
Yet the chamber became a contest.
Storage against origin.
Possession against identity.
The creature’s Claim collapsed.
Stone released DK.
The floor flattened.
A thread of pale-gold light emerged from the black object.
It moved toward Maerin.
The foreign membrane attacked.
Etzel stepped into it.
A tendril struck his shoulder.
He held.
DK cut another.
Sivenne protected Maerin with ordinary steel.
Tessa stood over Arven.
Saeva flashed every sensory opening that formed.
The golden structure crossed the chamber.
Entered Maerin.
She inhaled.
Lines exploded beneath her feet.
Not black.
Not stolen.
Hers.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[CLAIMED GROUND.]
The chamber answered.
Maerin opened her eyes.
Anger had replaced exhaustion.
“My ground.”
The foreign creature tried to move.
Stone swallowed both its legs.
Etzel grinned.
“There she is.”
Maerin looked at the black object.
“Can it take it again?”
“Only if you externalize enough for it to intercept.”
She looked at the Claim lines surrounding them.
Etzel’s grin disappeared.
“Ah.”
The black object pulsed.
A dark tendril raced along Maerin’s active territory.
It had a path.
“Release!”
Maerin dropped Claimed Ground instantly.
The lines vanished.
The tendril struck empty stone.
Etzel exhaled.
“Good.”
Sivenne stared at him.
“So we got it back and still cannot use it.”
“Correct.”
“I hate this dungeon.”
“Get in line.”
Arven spoke weakly.
“My ability.”
Etzel looked at the storage wall.
Forty-two remaining structures.
Threshold Step among them.
And dozens belonging to people who were not here.
Some might be alive.
Some dead.
Some walking around without the thing that once defined their Hunter life.
“We’re taking all of them out.”
DK looked at the black object.
“How?”
Etzel studied the transfer path.
“Same door.”
Sivenne frowned.
“The owners aren’t here.”
“Then we don’t return them yet.”
“Where do we put them?”
Etzel almost said Soul Space.
No.
Abilities were not souls.
He looked at the dungeon core.
The original blue crystal still existed around the foreign object.
Compromised.
Not dead.
Dungeon cores stored rules.
Patterns.
Rewards.
Structures.
“What if the dungeon can hold them?”
Maerin followed his gaze.
“You want to steal the stolen abilities from the thief and give them to the dungeon?”
“When you say it like that, it sounds irresponsible.”
“It is irresponsible.”
“Then we agree.”
The black object reacted.
DUNGEON NOTIFICATION
[FOREIGN INTERFERENCE DETECTED.]
The membrane opened every stored ability at once.
Fire.
Force.
Shields.
Sound.
Movement.
Forty-two structures lit.
Etzel’s expression changed.
“Down!”
The chamber became chaos.
A cutting wave crossed above them.
Fire struck stone.
A barrier trapped Sivenne.
A burst of force threw DK backward.
The foreign object was no longer trying to sample.
It was using everything.
But that created forty-two transfer paths.
Etzel looked at them.
“Oh.”
DK rose.
“No.”
“You don’t know what I’m thinking.”
“Yes.”
Etzel pointed at the web of dark lines.
“It opened every door.”
“That does not make entering them wise.”
“I don’t need to enter.”
He looked at Maerin.
“I need someone who can claim a location.”
She understood.
Her face changed.
“The core.”
“Yes.”
“If I Claim it, I externalize my ability.”
“And it tries to steal it.”
“Again.”
“Yes.”
Sivenne cut herself free of the barrier.
“This plan sounds worse every sentence.”
Etzel nodded.
“That’s how you know we’re close.”
Maerin moved toward the blue crystal.
DK and Sivenne covered her.
Tessa dragged Arven behind broken stone.
Saeva flashed sensors.
Etzel positioned himself between Maerin and the black object.
“Ready?”
“No.”
“Perfect.”
Maerin touched the dungeon core.
Claimed Ground activated.
Only a handspan.
Not the chamber.
Not the floor.
The original blue crystal.
A tiny territory.
The black object struck.
Its acquisition path opened toward Maerin.
Etzel was waiting.
He drove his spear through the path and twisted.
Not breaking.
Redirecting.
The path touched the blue crystal.
The dungeon core woke.
System text flooded the chamber.
SYSTEM ALERT
[CORE AUTHORITY CONFLICT.]
[UNREGISTERED STORAGE DETECTED.]
[RECOVERY PROTOCOL AVAILABLE.]
Etzel laughed.
“Got you.”
The black object tried to close every transfer line.
Too late.
The dungeon had seen its missing structures.
Not abilities belonging to it.
But stolen structures housed inside its authority.
The core reacted like an immune system finally noticing a parasite.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[EXPULSION INITIATED.]
The black object screamed.
Stored abilities tore free.
Not toward Etzel.
Into the blue core.
One after another.
Threshold Step.
Iron Skin.
Ember Thread.
Far Hearing.
Second Breath.
Dozens.
The foreign membrane shriveled with each loss.
Arven gasped.
A pale structure paused inside the core.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[Origin signature present within dungeon.]
Etzel looked at him.
“Arven!”
The structure shot from the crystal.
Entered his chest.
He fell.
Tessa caught him.
His eyes opened.
He looked at the nearest doorway.
Then vanished.
He reappeared two meters away.
Immediately collapsed.
Tessa stared.
Arven smiled weakly.
“Mine.”
Maerin smiled.
Etzel did too.
The remaining structures stayed inside the dungeon core.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[Origin signatures absent.]
[Structures secured pending compatible origin contact.]
Good enough.
The black object was alone now.
No stolen abilities.
No membrane.
No creatures.
Just smooth black glass embedded in blue crystal.
DK raised the Greatblade.
Etzel held up a hand.
“Wait.”
Sivenne groaned.
“Why?”
“Because we still don’t know what it is.”
“It steals abilities.”
“Yes.”
“It tried to kill us.”
“Yes.”
“It took Maerin’s.”
“Yes.”
“What additional personality test are you waiting for?”
Etzel looked at the object.
She had a point.
But the object had arrived from somewhere.
Destroying it might remove evidence.
Renn would want it.
Halven would want it.
Etzel wanted answers.
Then the Unclaimed Seed warmed inside his inventory.
He frowned.
The seed had reacted to an incomplete soul.
Why now?
He brought it out.
The split seed rested in his palm.
One tiny root.
The black object pulsed.
The root turned toward it.
Etzel’s expression changed.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[Potential growth condition detected.]
Sivenne leaned closer.
“What is that?”
“My Level 15 reward.”
“You got a seed?”
“Everyone has been very judgmental about this.”
System text appeared.
SYSTEM PROMPT
[Growth Condition Available.]
[Refusal required.]
Etzel stared.
Refusal of what?
The black object sent a message.
Not through the dungeon.
Directly to him.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[OFFER.]
A structure unfolded in his vision.
Not words.
Possibility.
One stored ability slot.
Permanent.
Empty.
The object was offering Etzel the mechanism it had used.
The ability to take.
Not Limited Necromancer.
Not a summon.
A new architecture.
Power.
Etzel could feel the weight of it.
His soul already carried too much.
Every ability added burden.
He knew the rule.
But the offer was seductive because it solved future problems.
Enemy ability?
Take it.
Dangerous technique?
Remove it.
Power gap?
Steal the answer.
Sivenne saw his expression.
“What?”
Etzel looked at the seed.
Growth shaped by what the bearer refuses to sacrifice.
He understood.
The first condition had been a principle.
No soul expendable because incomplete.
Now another choice.
Power at the cost of becoming someone who treated identity as equipment.
Etzel closed his hand.
“No.”
The offer intensified.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[PERMANENT ACQUISITION FUNCTION.]
“No.”

“I said no.”
The seed became hot.

[Unclaimed Seed has accepted second growth condition.]
[Condition recorded: Power is not worth taking what makes another person themselves.]
The black object cracked.
A single line.
Then another.
DK did not wait this time.
The Greatblade fell.
Black glass shattered.
The dungeon inhaled.
Every foreign membrane in the corridors collapsed.
System messages stabilized.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[Foreign interface removed.]
[Dungeon reclamation restored.]
[Closure cycle resumed.]
Etzel looked toward the entrance.
“How long?”
SYSTEM TIMER
[Dungeon closure in: 00:18:00.]
Sivenne stared.
“Eighteen minutes?”
Etzel picked up his spear.
“You wanted the dungeon fixed.”
“I wanted a leisurely version.”
“Run.”
They ran.
Behind them, dead creatures finally began dissolving.
Energy returned to the dungeon.
Unfinished corridors collapsed.
Mapped architecture reasserted itself.
Maerin supported Arven.
Tessa supported Maerin when she stumbled.
Sivenne complained continuously, which Etzel found reassuring.
DK carried anyone who slowed too much without asking permission.
Saeva rode Etzel’s shoulder.
They reached the gate with four minutes remaining.
Authority teams pulled them through.
Renn counted.
Etzel.
DK.
Saeva.
Sivenne.
Maerin.
Tessa.
Arven.
Then he looked behind them.
“Where is Mireth?”
“Outside.”
Mireth stood exactly where Etzel had left it.
Monitoring band intact.
It looked at him.
“You returned.”
Etzel bent over, hands on knees.
“Disappointed?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Mireth looked at Maerin.
“You lost something.”
Maerin stopped.
“How do you know?”
“You are holding yourself differently.”
She looked at Etzel.
He shrugged.
“It does that.”
Mireth asked:
“Did you recover it?”
Maerin put one hand on the ground.
For half a second, a single Claim line appeared.
Then vanished.
“Yes.”
Mireth nodded.
“Good.”
No envy.
No request to see it.
No attempt to learn.
Etzel noticed.
Another choice.
Then Halven ran from the command station.
He held a scan of the shattered black object.
Or what little Authority had captured before destruction.
“Etzel.”
“What?”
“The material signature.”
“Please don’t say Graveback.”
“It isn’t.”
Etzel straightened.
Halven enlarged the result.
The black glass had no match in Authority records.
But it did have one partial resonance.
Ancient Tree.
Etzel stopped moving.
Not identical.
Not the Tree itself.
But related to the same System-layer architecture that allowed humans to awaken.
Sivenne read his face.
“What does that mean?”
Etzel looked at the dungeon gate as it finally closed.
“It means someone isn’t experimenting on monsters anymore.”
His hand tightened around the seed.
“They’re experimenting on the thing that gives us abilities.”
