The Last Rule of Death

Chapter 144 - Not a Rescue Order

  • Next Chapter

Etzel listened to Edran's recording four times.

Not because he expected the words to change.

Kestrel had simply taught him not to assume they wouldn't.

"Whatever you do, don't let the girl die."

The recorder clicked off.

Etzel leaned against the waystation desk.

"He didn't say save her."

Orsik looked at him.

"Difference?"

"Potentially enormous."

Saeva sat cross-legged on the floor beside the open door.

"Girl alive."

"Yes."

"Save."

"Maybe."

She frowned.

Etzel pointed at the dead recorder.

"He didn't say she's helpless. He didn't say she's good. He didn't even say she's human."

Saeva frowned harder.

"Girl."

"That part we have."

Renn's voice came through the secure line.

"Do not touch anything else."

Etzel looked at the room.

Authority had already begun remote cataloguing.

Earth emergency equipment.

Objects from Orsik's world.

Three items with no known origin.

One black-metal coin that made every electronic scale report a different mass.

The NovelPhoenix publication is the author's own posting; this page repeats its chapter without permission, and the source supports them.

Nobody was touching that one.

Etzel approved.

The wall behind the cot proved more useful.

Marks had been carved beside a rough map.

Not geographic.

Routes.

Lines connected circles, broken squares and symbols Etzel did not recognize.

Beside several paths Edran had written words.

OPEN.

CLOSED.

DEAD.

HUNGRY.

Etzel stared at the last one.

"Roads can be hungry?"

Orsik studied the symbol beside it.

"Apparently."

"I miss monsters."

"You complained about monsters."

"I was younger."

"Yesterday?"

"Emotionally, years."

Saeva pointed at another note.

Etzel moved closer.

KEEPER ≠ ENEMY.

Below it, carved again:

KEEPER ≠ ENEMY.

Etzel stopped smiling.

Edran had believed that strongly enough to write it twice.

Yet another message claimed the Keeper would kill Ilyen before allowing her to reach Earth.

Contradiction.

Or incomplete information.

Etzel preferred the second until evidence proved the first.

He kept searching.

Behind the cot, almost hidden beneath an emergency blanket, three words had been carved deeply enough to scar the metal wall.

SHE DIES → ROAD OPENS.

Silence.

Etzel read it again.

Orsik's expression hardened.

"So that is why."

"One reason."

"If her death opens a road—"

"We still don't know where."

Earth.

Another world.

Something worse.

Rook stirred inside the Foundation.

Uneasy.

Etzel did not question him.

The waystation had already given enough.

Authority found a second recorder inside a ceramic vessel.

The vessel was scanned before anyone opened it.

No active soul response.

No contamination.

No spatial distortion.

Etzel pressed play.

Edran's voice returned.

"If you found the first message, you're already making bad decisions."

Etzel closed his eyes.

"I definitely dislike him."

Orsik's mouth moved.

Almost.

Etzel pointed.

"That was nearly a smile."

The recording continued.

"If you're still there, listen carefully. Her name is Ilyen."

Static.

"Ilyen. Remember that."

Edran coughed.

The sound was wet.

Old recording or recent recording meant nothing here.

"The road will try to make you call her something else."

Etzel straightened.

The recorder died.

System text appeared.

SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[Bound soul identity reference acquired.]
[Ilyen - recognition incomplete.]

Then the name flickered.

IL-YEN.

SAEVA.

Etzel's entire body went still.

SYSTEM WARNING
[Warning.]
[Identity substitution attempt detected.]

He looked at Saeva.

She was sitting exactly where she had been.

Alive.

Annoyed.

Real.

Etzel felt her through the Soul Link.

No ambiguity.

But the System had just tried to put her name over someone else's soul.

Saeva tilted her head.

"Etzel?"

He looked back at the message.

The name had returned to Ilyen.

For one instant, Kestrel had not tried to show him a dead relative.

It had tried something more dangerous.

It had tried to make a stranger familiar.
