The Last Rule of Death

Chapter 128 - Don't Answer

  • Next Chapter

The road was disappointing.

Etzel stood at its edge and stared.

Cracked asphalt.

Dead grass.

One collapsed drainage pipe.

Nothing glowed.

Nothing floated.

No doorway between worlds.

“This is it?”

Orsik studied the empty road.

“That is what worries me.”

Jalen planted physical markers every ten meters.

Mara established a barrier anchor behind them.

Garrick remained with the retreat line.

Nobody crossed the first distortion point.

Those were the orders.

Etzel intended to follow them.

Then Neris said his name.

“Etzel?”

His entire body froze.

The voice came from behind him.

Close.

Maybe five meters.

Neris sounded annoyed.

Normal.

Exactly normal.

He knew the shape of that annoyance.

She used it when he borrowed something without asking.

When he came home late.

When Saeva helped him steal food and Neris blamed him because blaming Saeva was useless.

“Etzel?”

He did not turn.

Did not answer.

His heartbeat became loud.

Neris was nowhere near Kestrel.

He knew that.

Knowledge did not make the voice less perfect.

Saeva looked at him.

Her face had gone pale.

“Etzel?”

Not calling him.

Repeating what she heard.

Etzel understood.

“You hear me.”

She nodded.

“Behind.”

“Use the bond.”

Saeva closed her eyes.

The Soul Link remained between them.

Real.

Immediate.

Her shoulders relaxed.

“Fake Etzel.”

“Correct.”

Then Orsik’s hand tightened around his Greatblade.

Etzel looked at him.

The knight had gone completely still.

A woman’s voice came from the empty road.

Etzel could not understand the language.

Orsik could.

His face changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

Old enough that Etzel felt a shadow of it through the bond.

The voice spoke again.

One word survived translation through Orsik’s reaction.

His name.

“Orsik.”

Etzel stepped closer.

“Don’t answer.”

Orsik’s fingers trembled.

The woman said something else.

Etzel felt memory pressure begin inside the bond.

Not a full resonance event.

A door trying to open.

“Orsik.”

The knight closed his eyes.

“I know.”

The voice became softer.

More intimate.

Orsik’s jaw tightened.

He did not answer.

Etzel had never been more proud of silence.

Then Jalen said:

“Dad?”

Everyone turned.

Too late.

Jalen stood three meters from his marker.

Then one step later he stood more than a hundred meters down the road.

No transition.

No flash.

One step.

Distance changed.

“Jalen!” Mara shouted.

He turned toward empty air.

Tears ran down his face.

“I heard you.”

Etzel ran.

Ten meters became thirty.

He stopped immediately.

Good.

Running was feeding the assumption that distance behaved normally.

It did not.

Jalen took another step.

Farther.

Orsik moved after him.

“Stop!”

Orsik stopped.

Etzel forced himself to observe.

Jalen was not being dragged physically.

No force on clothing.

No marks in the road.

Each time the voice spoke, Jalen oriented toward it.

Each time he answered, the next step changed distance.

Response.

Soul response.

The road was using acknowledgment.

Maybe.

Test without sacrificing anyone.

Etzel shouted:

“Jalen! Do not answer it!”

Jalen looked back.

“But that’s him.”

His father.

Etzel knew nothing about the man.

Did not need to.

“No. It’s what you remember.”

Not proven.

Useful.

Jalen’s face twisted.

The voice called again.

He opened his mouth.

Etzel screamed.

“DON’T.”

Jalen shut it.

He took one step.

This time he moved normally.

There.

Etzel pointed.

“Silence stops the shift!”

Mara understood.

She drove a barrier line across the road, not to block Jalen, but to give him a physical reference.

“Look at me!”

Jalen did.

The voice called.

He sobbed.

Did not answer.

Another normal step.

Orsik moved.

Not toward Jalen directly.

Along the barrier markers.

Physical references.

Each step tested before the next.

Saeva used the Soul Link to stay anchored to Etzel.

Garrick drove the head of his hammer into the asphalt behind them.

“Retreat point!”

Simple.

Real.

Good.

Jalen moved closer.

Seventy meters.

Forty.

Twenty.

The voice changed.

It stopped sounding like his father.

Now it sounded desperate.

“Please.”

Jalen nearly broke.

Etzel saw it.

“Whatever it is, it needs you to answer.”

Jalen stared at him.

That was also not proven.

But it gave him something to fight.

He nodded.

One step.

Ten meters.

Orsik reached him.

Grabbed his vest.

The road distorted.

For one instant both men appeared impossibly far away.

Etzel’s stomach dropped.

Then Saeva shouted.

“Orsik!”

Not with her voice.

Through the bond.

Etzel pushed his own presence down the Soul Link.

Here.

Real.

Orsik responded without words.

The connection tightened.

The distance snapped back.

Both men stood twelve meters away.

Mara extended the barrier.

Garrick grabbed Jalen.

They pulled him across the first marker.

The voices stopped.

All of them.

Silence crashed over the road.

Jalen collapsed.

Mara caught him.

Etzel did not celebrate.

Rook’s bond exploded inside the Foundation.

He doubled over.

“Etzel?”

Orsik was beside him.

“Rook.”

Etzel entered the Soul Realm for a fraction of a second.

Rook stood fully upright.

Still an echo.

Still incomplete.

But more defined than ever.

The old dog faced the darkness.

His mouth opened.

“Ed…”

The bond pulled.

Hard.

“Edr…”

Saeva appeared beside him.

“Rook.”

The echo shook.

Then the name came.

“Edran.”

Etzel opened his eyes.

Something stood in the middle of the road.

Far away.

Human silhouette.

No visible approach.

No clear face.

Just a man-shaped figure where nothing had been.

Orsik saw it.

Mara saw it.

Good.

Not only Etzel.

System text appeared.

SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[Primary endpoint proximity increased.]

The figure looked toward them.

Rook’s echo strained inside the Foundation.

Etzel did not move.

Did not call the name.

Did not answer the road.

The System added another line.

SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[Endpoint identity: unconfirmed.]

Etzel exhaled.

“Good.”

Orsik looked at him.

“Good?”

“It means I haven’t started believing what this place wants me to believe.”

The silhouette raised one hand.

Rook whimpered inside the Foundation.

Then the road folded.

The figure vanished.

Etzel stared at the empty asphalt.

No pursuit.

No heroic stupidity.

They had a wounded tracker, new data, and proof that something at the other end could appear close enough to see.

That was enough.

“Retreat,” Etzel said.

Nobody argued.

As they moved back toward the marker, Neris’s voice whispered behind him one last time.

“Etzel?”

He kept walking.
