THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 472: CAPITAL OF AZAREEN

  • Next Chapter

The sunlit coastal capital of Azareen woke to the melodious tolling of bronze temple bells.

Sunlight sparkled across wide salt canals, turquoise harbor domes, and sprawling spice markets, illuminating thousands of colorful banners.

From the northern reaches of Tagayia to the southern coastline of N’Faya, the newly unified realm celebrated the official ratification of the Treaty of the Five Sands.

Merchant caravels from the eastern sea docked alongside southern trading skiffs, unloading bolts of silk, barrels of fragrant olive oil, and baskets of dried northern herbs.

High atop the white sandstone terrace of the Sovereign Residence, Supreme Chief Sagiri looked out over the thriving port city.

The gentle ocean breeze carried the rich scents of roasting cloves, citrus blossoms, and salty coastal tides, filling his senses with warmth.

Beside the palace terrace, rows of sweet-smelling orange trees and purple bougainvillea blossomed along marble balustrades.

Attendants in linen tunics carried clay pitchers of cool well water, keeping garden paths shaded and fresh in the midday sun.

Sagiri wore a lightweight southern tunic of dark indigo silk, his sleeves rolled up to reveal the calm silver runes resting beneath his skin.

The Five Relics within his bloodstream hummed in peaceful equilibrium, drawing gentle vitality from the warm desert earth beneath his boots.

Down in the vast oasis lagoon beneath the palace terrace, the colossal ancient desert beast Zaira submerged her massive body in crystal-clear water.

The great desert beast exhaled a satisfied plume of water vapor into the air, rolling lazily while laughing children tossed fresh melon slices into the shallows.

“The second rotation of the Southern Host arrived at the eastern gates at dawn,” General Zafaru announced, walking out onto the terrace with Master Sandshade Koru.

The southern general wore his lightweight linen war tunic, looking relaxed and proud.

“Ten thousand spearmen have returned to their home villages to help with the autumn harvest,” Zafaru reported with a broad smile.

“The remaining ten thousand stationed in central provinces send word that trade caravans are moving without a single incident.”

“The roads between Azareen and Molakwa are already bustling with merchant wagons,” Master Koru added, resting his wrinkled hands upon his carved desert staff.

“For the first time in fifty years, northern wool, eastern silk, and central steel are being traded openly in our spice markets.”

General Zafaru handed Sagiri a sealed dispatch scroll from the North, stamped with Kaka’s roaring bear seal.

“A courier hawk arrived from the Iron Citadel this morning. Grand Zorath Kaka sends his greetings.”

Sagiri unfurled the scroll, chuckling softly as he read Kaka’s bold, messy handwriting.

The new northern king bragged about instituting thirty-mile mountain runs for his cadets and challenged Sagiri to a wrestling rematch.

N’varu stepped onto the terrace in her light scout leathers, tossing a packet of letters from Squad 25 onto the table.

“Kiuga reports the central highway bridges are half finished, Bukata and Maita have inspected fifteen border posts, and young Ulekai has eaten at every tavern in the western foothills.”

She shook her head with a rare, dry chuckle at Ulekai’s endless appetite.

A soft rustle of silk sounded from the archway as Lady Kiana walked onto the terrace, accompanied by four senior Sekana water-singers and surveyors.

She carried a bundle of freshly drawn architectural charts bound with silver thread.

“The blueprints for the grand oasis city of New N’folu are complete, Supreme Chief,” Kiana announced with a graceful bow.

“Construction on the outer aqueducts in the ancestral crater has already begun under Master Bakuru’s guidance.”

Sagiri looked over the blueprints, a deep, profound warmth swelling in his chest at the sight of his mother’s ancestral homeland rising from the ashes.

“You have done magnificent work, Lady Kiana,” Sagiri said softly, his amber and silver eyes glowing with gratitude.

“The memory of N’folu will not be remembered in graves, but in the living waters of a city that will stand for a thousand years.”

Just then, Healer Lira stepped onto the terrace carrying a tray of iced melon juice and fresh mint tea.

She wore a breezy southern dress of pale green silk, her soft cheeks flushed from the afternoon heat as she handed cups to everyone.

“Drink before the ice melts, Sagiri,” Lira urged with a tender smile, gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair from his brow.

“You have spent all morning reading treaties when the physicians ordered you to rest in the gardens.”

General Zafaru, Master Koru, and N’varu shared amused glances as the supreme sovereign of the continent obediently took the cup and drank.

The fierce warrior who had defeated armies and severed ancient curses was utterly defenseless against the gentle scolding of his healer.

“A wise ruler knows when to surrender to his Kun,” General Zafaru teased with a hearty chuckle.

Lira’s cheeks turned a bright, adorable crimson, but she stood proudly beside Sagiri, her hand resting softly over his fingers.

Looking out across the sun-drenched rooftops of Azareen, surrounded by comrades, elders, and the woman he loved, the Last Keeper smiled.

The long shadow of war had passed, and the golden age of Tasaka had truly begun.
