THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 440: SPATIAL FRACTURES
Dawn was breaking over the northern mountains as the heavy iron gates of Galka War Academy swung slowly inward.
Hundreds of cadets and senior instructors lined the grand stone courtyard, their eyes wide with awe as they looked upon the returning heroes of the continental war.
At the head of the arrival plaza stood Grand Marshal Sikuwa, his crisp white robes fluttering in the morning wind alongside Captain Torena and Miss Lakiya.
Behind the southern vanguard, medical attendants rushed forward with a padded stretcher, gently lifting the heavily bandaged Bukata from the transport wagon.
"Careful with his ribs, you clumsy fools," Maita snapped at the young medics, his hands on his daggers as he glared with sharp, irritable eyes. "If you drop him, I will personally throw you into the training pit."
"Relax, Maita, they know how to carry a wounded man," Kiuga said, though his own eyes were scanning the courtyard with sharp, vigilant calculations.
Kaka marched alongside the stretcher with his massive battleaxes drawn, glaring fiercely at any academy cadet who dared to stare too closely.
"Clear a path!" Kaka bellowed, his deep voice echoing off the stone fortress walls. "If anyone gets in the way of our hospital wagon, I will break their legs!"
"Wait, is this the front gate or the dining hall?" Ulekai asked, blinking sleepily as he looked at the high stone archway. "I could have sworn the soup kitchen had more pillars."
Zolinka let out a long sigh, grabbing Ulekai by the back of his collar to steer him away from an open drainage grate.
Grand Marshal Sikuwa stepped forward, his dark, perceptive eyes sweeping across Squad 25 before settling upon Sagiri, who walked at the rear of the column.
Sagiri wore his dark sovereign coat loosely draped over his shoulders, his hands tucked inside his sleeves to hide the violent trembling in his fingers.
Along his jawline, down his throat, and spreading across his collarbones, the dark, ink-black markings on his skin were glowing with an erratic, boiling violet light.
Every few seconds, the dark runes squirmed like living serpents, releasing thin trails of dark steam that hissed against the cold morning air.
"Welcome back, War College officers," Grand Marshal Sikuwa said in his calm, measured voice. "The medical wing has been prepared for Bukata, and the lower sanctuary has been cleared by my order."
"Thank you, Grand Marshal," Sagiri replied softly, forcing his voice to remain steady as an agonizing spasm tore through his chest.
As Sagiri took a single step forward, his concentration slipped for a fraction of a heartbeat.
CRACK!
A sharp, deafening sound like tearing glass ripped through the courtyard.
Without warning, three jagged black spatial fissures tore through the air around Sagiri's feet, slicing cleanly through the granite flagstones like razor-sharp blades.
The cobblestones beneath his boots shattered into black powder, and a nearby stone pillar was sliced clean in two, its top half collapsing to the ground with a heavy crash.
Cadets in the courtyard gasped in sheer terror, scrambling backward as the black fissures crackled with unstable void lightning.
"Stay back, everyone!" General Zafaru roared, unsheathing his bronze scimitar as Master Sandshade Koru raised his arms to establish a perimeter.
Kaka immediately stepped between the panicking cadets and Sagiri, raising his heavy axes with a terrifying, protective snarl.
"Back off, all of you!" Kaka shouted at the crowd.
"Kaka, stand down," Kiuga commanded, his sharp mind assessing the spatial fractures in a split second. "It is not an enemy attack."
Sagiri dropped to one knee on the shattered stones, clenching his teeth so hard that a thin trickle of crimson blood ran down his chin.
The ink-black markings across his jaw and chest burned with blistering, molten heat, writhing across his ribs and threatening to tear his mortal flesh apart.
Every time he tried to breathe, black spatial sparks burst from his fingertips, leaving thin, weeping tears in the fabric of reality around him.
The voice of his dark reflection echoed in his mind, laughing with cold, mocking delight at his failing control.
'The vessel is breaking, little Keeper...' the dark whisper hissed inside his soul. 'You cannot hold five gods and keep the void asleep. Let the earth shatter!'
"No..." Sagiri gasped through clenched teeth, forcing his hands flat against the trembling ground.
Before the spatial cracks could expand any further, Lira dropped to her knees in the dust right in front of him, heedless of the sharp black lightning grazing her robes.
"Sagiri, look at me!" Lira cried, her voice trembling with raw, desperate fear as tears welled in her misty grey eyes.
She wrapped her arms around his shaking shoulders, pressing her glowing green palms firmly against his burning chest without a single thought for her own safety.
A radiant wave of pure, cool cellular energy flooded from Lira's hands straight into his heart, acting like soothing mountain water poured over raging molten iron.
Beside her, Lady Kiana knelt swiftly, tracing intricate silver void seals with her fingers to absorb and neutralize the wild spatial fractures in the air.
"Focus on my voice, Sagiri," Lira whispered against his ear, her tears falling warm against his boiling skin. "Do not listen to the dark. I am right here."
Sagiri felt the familiar, soothing coolness of Lira's embrace wrapping around his trembling spirit, anchoring his slipping consciousness to the waking world.
He let out a long, ragged breath, resting his forehead against the soft wool of her shoulder as he forced the chaotic relic energy back into his core.
Slowly, the black spatial fissures in the ground sealed shut, and the molten red runes on his skin cooled back into dark, quiet lines along his throat.
"I have you," Lira whispered softly, her trembling hands stroking his dark hair as she held him tightly in the center of the silent courtyard. "You're safe."
Sagiri nodded weakly against her shoulder, his chest heaving with exhaustion as the agonizing heat receded beneath his collar.
Grand Marshal Sikuwa stepped over the cracked stones, his face darker and graver than anyone had ever seen it.
Beside him, Master Sandshade Koru shook his head with grim sorrow, his white, pupil-less eyes staring directly at the boiling corruption in Sagiri's soul.
"The seal on the Living Memory has fractured completely," Koru said in a low, heavy whisper that only Sikuwa and the squad could hear. "The void is leaking into the physical realm."
"We must get him into the Endless Pool immediately," Sikuwa stated, his voice tight with urgent resolve. "If another spatial tear opens, the entire mountain could collapse."
Kiuga stepped forward, his face pale as he looked at the shattered granite and the dark markings on Sagiri's neck.
For the first time, Kiuga did not offer a single witty joke or tactical statistic; he simply reached down with Kaka to help their leader to his feet.
"We are with you, Sagiri," Kiuga said quietly, his voice filled with unbreakable loyalty. "All the way to the bottom of the pool."
Sagiri looked at his friends—at Lira's tearful face, Kaka's protective stance, Kiana's calm support, and Kiuga's resolute gaze.
He wiped the blood from his chin and stood tall, knowing that the greatest trial of his life was waiting in the dark waters below.
