THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 396: SEVERING THE DARK SEAL
The flooded subterranean hall shook violently as Supreme Mandra Taziraka launched himself across the shattered floor like a dark thunderbolt.
He was fast, even more so now that he was not taming the beast art at all.
His pitch-black beast aura flared into a howling maelstrom of compressed air and kinetic force, tearing up heavy chunks of reinforced steel grating in his wake.
Kaka did not flinch, dropping his hips into a low, immovable stance while bracing his heavy iron tower shield against his broad left shoulder.
He drove his steel-capped boots deep into the stone seam, locking his powerful leg muscles to receive the full kinetic impact of the sovereign’s charge.
"Hold the line, Kaka!" Kiuga yelled from the high catwalk, his hands gripping the iron winch release lever with white-hot focus. "Do not let his momentum carry him into the open floor where he can pivot around your guard!"
The Mandra’s fist crashed into the center of Kaka’s tower shield with a deafening boom that resonated through the granite foundations of the mountain.
The four-inch iron plate buckled inward under the titanic impact, driving Kaka’s boots six paces backward through the solid stone flooring as bright orange sparks showered into the flooded chemical water.
Another punch followed the impact, even more than the first.
The impact brought him to his knees. One of his knees hit the floor, cracking it before he was pushed back a few feet. The shield broke in half with a snap.
Damn it!
Kaka’s teeth ground together with an audible crack, his face turning crimson from sheer physical exertion as a thin line of blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
"I am a son of the northern tribes!" Kaka roared through gritted teeth, refusing to let the heavy shield fall from his grasp. "My ancestors held the frozen ridges against winter titans, and I will not yield an inch to an imperial beast in chains!"
The momentary resistance arrested the Mandra’s forward momentum for a single, crucial heartbeat, pinning his black-clad fist firmly against the warped iron face of the shield.
"Drop the chains now!" Kiuga bellowed, throwing his full body weight onto the mechanical release lever of the overhead cargo winch.
Three heavy iron crane chains dropped from the ceiling rafters, crashing down around the Mandra’s shoulders in a deafening shower of rust and sparks. Maita and Zolinka leaped from opposite pillars, catching the weighted trailing cables before wrapping them twice around the heavy granite columns flanking the chamber.
They hauled backward on the tension lines with all their strength, locking the iron links tight across the Mandra’s muscular arms and torso to pin him in place.
The Mandra let out an enraged, primordial roar that shattered the surviving glass canisters lining the perimeter walls of the laboratory. Pitch-black beast aura erupted from his pores in violent shockwaves, straining the four-inch iron chain links until the metal began to glow red-hot under the terrifying pressure.
"He is tearing the anchors out of the stone!" Maita shouted in desperation, his boots skidding across the wet floor as the massive granite column cracked beneath the strain.
"Sagiri, strike now!" Kiuga screamed, veins bulging along his neck as he held the winch brake against the terrifying beast strength. "We cannot hold this monster for more than two heartbeats before the chains snap and he tears through this entire room!"
Sagiri sprang into the air from the elevated rim of the chemical vat, his dark cloak billowing behind him like the broad wings of a hunting raptor. The ancient pulse of the Archive flooded his meridians, slowing his perception of time until every falling water droplet hung suspended like glittering crystals in the glowing red air.
Through the translucent chemical mist, Sagiri’s glowing crimson eyes locked onto the heavy black iron collar fused into the base of the Supreme Mandra’s skull. He could clearly see the five corrupted bio-neural needles pulsing with dark alchemical venom, pumping hypnotic madness directly into the imperial spinal cord.
Sagiri channeled the silver-black equilibrium of the Living Memory into Nokai, causing the ancient blade to narrow into a razor-thin sliver of concentrated starlight. He descended through the raging vortex of black beast aura, slipping past the thrashing kinetic gales with supernatural, weightless grace.
In a single blinding, fluid arc, Sagiri drove the glowing silver tip of Nokai directly into the central nexus of the black iron collar. He did not strike with blunt destructive force, but with the delicate, surgical precision of an ancient master physician severing a diseased thread.
A brilliant flash of pure silver light exploded outward from the point of impact, banishing the crimson emergency shadows from the subterranean chamber. The five bio-neural needles shattered into fine black dust, dissolving instantly as the ancient light purged the dark corruption from the sovereign’s nervous system.
The heavy black iron collar snapped in half with a crisp metallic ring, falling away from the imperial neck and splashing harmlessly into the flooded floor below.
The raging black beast aura vanished like morning mist beneath a blazing desert sun, leaving only the cold mountain draft whistling through the ruined hall. The violent tension on the cargo chains disappeared in an instant, causing Maita and Zolinka to tumble backward onto the wet stone floor.
The Supreme Mandra’s rigid muscles relaxed completely, his towering frame swaying as the slit-pupil amber madness faded from his eyes. His irises expanded back into their natural, noble dark-brown hue, filled with profound exhaustion, bewilderment, and returning human consciousness.
"Where... where am I?" Taziraka gasped in a hoarse, ragged whisper, his heavy knees buckling beneath him as his physical strength gave out completely.
Sagiri landed softly upon the floor, catching the falling sovereign beneath his arms before the imperial master could collapse into the flooded shale.
He lowered the Supreme Mandra gently against the base of an unyielding stone pillar, supporting his broad back with calm, steady hands while circulating a gentle pulse of soothing thermal energy into his spine to stabilize his battered nerves.
Kaka dropped his battered, concave tower shield to the floor with a heavy, reverberating clatter, leaning heavily against the haft of his war axe while catching his breath. The giant northern warrior exhaled a cloud of white vapor, rolling his bruised shoulders with a grim wince.
"Is the beast asleep?" Kaka asked in a deep, gravelly voice, wiping sweat and blood from his brow with the back of his iron gauntlet.
"The seal is broken," Sagiri answered, his voice calm and steady as he checked the breathing rhythm of the imperial ruler. "The corruption has been purged from his bloodstream, and his mind is his own once again."
Kiuga slid down the iron ladder from the catwalk, his chest heaving with exhaustion as he walked over to inspect the shattered black needles scattered across the stone floor.
He nudged one of the dark fragments with the toe of his leather boot, noting how the foul black residue dissolved into harmless grey ash upon contact with the air.
"I cannot believe we actually pulled that off without getting torn in half," Kiuga breathed, shaking his head with a faint, trembling smirk. "If Kaka had yielded half a step on that shield, we would all be flattened against that wall right now."
Maita groaned as he pushed himself up from the floor, clutching his bruised ribs while dusting shattered glass and plaster from his trousers.
"Next time we fight an imperial master," Maita complained with a wince, "remind me to bring thicker chains and two more northern brutes."
"You did well, Maita," Zolinka said, offering him a steady hand to pull him up from the flooded shale. "Your timing on that anchor line was flawless. Without your tension, those links never would have held."
The Supreme Mandra lifted his trembling hand to the back of his neck, feeling the smooth, unblemished skin where the five bio-neural needles had once been embedded.
His fingers touched the residual warmth lingering in his flesh, marveling at the clean, scarless healing wrought by the Living Memory.
He looked up into the dual-colored eyes of the young warrior supporting his weight, recognizing the unmistakable, ancient aura of the N’folu.
"The Last Keeper..." Taziraka murmured, his deep voice trembling with returning memory as the fog of hypnotic madness cleared from his mind.
A heavy, solemn silence fell across the ruined subterranean chamber as the ruler of Tagayia looked upon the young soldiers who had risked everything to save his life.
Around them, the shattered remnants of the dark laboratory lay still in the dying red emergency light, bearing silent witness to the salvation of an emperor and the birth of an unbreakable alliance.
