THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 383: UNTIL NIGHTFALL

  • Next Chapter

The sun bled into a dull copper disc over the western crest when galloping hooves broke along the high ridge line.

The rhythmic sound of churning shale echoed down the limestone walls as a lone outrider rode furiously toward Kun Nakia’s command circle.

The rider dropped to one knee on the cold stone, holding aloft a cylindrical bronze scroll-case bearing the crimson wax seal of the Southern Sovereign Council.

Nakia cracked the hardened seal with her thumbnail, unraveling the coarse parchment to inspect the sharp desert calligraphy within.

The message contained no diplomatic pleas, no apologies, and no room for negotiation.

It delivered only a strict timetable, declaring that the iron fortress gates of N’Faya would swing open if Supreme Chief Sagiri remained unreturned by dusk.

The scroll warned that twenty thousand southern spears stood arrayed along the eastern boundary, ready to march across every border fort to Galka.

Nakia rolled the parchment back into its casing, tucking the bronze cylinder beneath the leather strap of her gauntlet.

She walked to the edge of the limestone ledge, looking down into the darkening wash where the southern detachment stood in absolute silence.

The ten Sandshades remained unmoved in the center of the clearing, their gray cloaks blending into the massive shadow cast by the titan serpent.

Beside them, Zaira lay coiled like an obsidian fortress, her golden eyes watching the changing light with ancient, unblinking patience.

Nakia turned toward her senior beast-tamer, her voice low and calculating beneath the howling mountain gale.

"The South stands on the eastern road with twenty thousand spears, giving the continent until dusk before their legions march."

"Test their perimeter before the light vanishes," Nakia ordered, "and see if their discipline matches their reputation."

Three elite Tsanka scouts separated from the cliffline, gliding down the steep scree slope with seasoned mountain agility.

They used the natural cracks in the limestone to descend fifty paces in seconds, landing silently in the dry wash thirty paces from the southern line.

The scouts fanned out in a low triangular formation, unspooling weighted hemp nets and notched hunting daggers from their belts.

They moved with predatory stealth, testing the reaction speed of the desert warriors while closing the distance to the perimeter.

They dropped their centers of gravity into the authentic predator stance of the Sawaka wilderness, advancing with soundless, rhythmic strides across the stones.

Zaira did not roar, nor did she lash her massive tail in fury.

The mountain serpent simply shifted her colossal armored body two paces left, placing her thick scales between the scouts and the Sandshades.

She lifted one massive armored claw and drove it directly into the limestone bedrock with measured force.

A localized, pressurized shockwave ripped across the gravel, tossing a wave of compacted dirt and stone into the air.

The kinetic displacement caught all three scouts at once, lifting them off their feet and sending them tumbling backward through the dust.

The shock jarred their hunting daggers from their fingers, scattering their weighted nets across the dry riverbed.

Before the scouts could regain their footing, N’varu crossed thirty paces in the blink of an eye using fluid sand-gliding footwork.

He moved past their disordered guard like a shadow, striking the radial nerve clusters in their forearms with the flat of his crescent dagger.

The three western scouts fell to their knees, their arms temporarily numbed and their remaining weapons disarmed without a drop of blood spilled.

N’varu stepped back three paces, folding his arms loosely within his sleeves as he looked up toward the command ledge.

"The beast halted your hunters without crushing a bone, and my warriors leave them whole," N’varu’s voice carried clearly to the ridge.

"The South offers you a choice between wisdom and pride, Kun Nakia."

Nakia stared down at her three elite scouts slowly rising from the dirt, rubbing their paralyzed wrists in stunned silence.

"I see that the beast obeys discipline, Sandshade," Nakia called down from the height.

"Yet discipline does not alter geography when the sun disappears behind the mountains."

The final sliver of copper sunlight slipped beneath the western peaks, plunging the deep canyon into freezing twilight.

A shrill signal whistle pierced the cold air along the limestone rim, echoing from ridge to ridge like the shriek of a hunting hawk.

Three thousand Western warriors rose simultaneously from the darkened heights, their silhouettes lining the entire circumference of the basin.

The Western Army unleashed the authentic predatory hunting arts of the Sawaka wilderness across the rocky slopes.

Down the steep scree slopes poured Tsanka shock troops and Kafika skirmishers, moving in low, quad-pedal beast-crawls to maintain balance.

They descended in coordinated hunting packs, launching clouds of barbed grappling chains and neuro-venom darts from leather slings.

The iron-tipped projectiles hissed through the twilight air, aimed at the lower joints and weapon arms of the southern guards.

N’varu unsheathed his twin crescent blades with a sharp metallic hiss that cut through the roar of descending boots.

"Diamond seal!" N’varu commanded his brothers, "Hold the center and redirect their momentum through the sand currents!"

The ten Sandshades moved as an unbroken living mechanism, their gray cloaks billowing as they glided across the uneven stone.

They used phantom mirage steps to slip beneath the descending chain barrages, catching iron links along the curved guards of their hilts.

A veteran Tsanka spearman lunged forward with a twin-headed poison spear, aiming for N’varu’s throat with lethal speed.

The Sandshade leader dipped beneath the thrust with razor-thin clearance, pivoting on the heel of his boot to drive his elbow into the spearman’s ribs.

The impact sent the heavy warrior crashing into his oncoming shield-bearers, breaking the momentum of the western vanguard’s first wave.

Beside N’varu, two Sandshades executed synchronized low sweeps, slicing through taut grappling lines and redirecting charging warriors into the dirt.

Every strike was calibrated with ancient southern precision, disarming weapons and turning kinetic force back toward the scree slopes.

Yet for every western hunter tossed to the gravel, five more vaulted over the boulders with broad hunting blades bared.

The Western Army pressed closer from every angle, their hunting perimeter closing like a vice around the southern diamond.

Behind the charging lines, Kafika beast-tamers brought forward packs of snarling war-panthers, their claws scraping against the limestone.

High above on the middle terraces, the timber frames of cliffside ballistae began to creak in the darkness as iron winches wound tight.

The heavy siege engines were locked into firing position, their iron-tipped bolts aimed directly at the center of the southern line.

The countdown to nightfall had expired, and the battle for the western basin erupted into full, merciless combat beneath the stars.
