The last DragonHeart

Chapter 30: The Council's Wrath

  • Next Chapter

The victory celebrations lasted three days.

James stood on the walls of Ashford, watching the fires of celebration dance across the city. The Beast King was dead. The Sky Queen had surrendered. The invasion had been stopped. But James felt no joy. Only a cold, gnawing dread that settled in his chest like a stone.

The Celestial Council had not yet shown their full power. Everything they had faced so far—the scouts, the Wardens, the weapons, the armies—had been mere appetizers. The main course was still coming.

Sage appeared beside him, her scarred face unreadable. "You should be celebrating. Your people are happy."

James shook his head. "They're happy because they don't know what's coming. But I do. And I can't celebrate when I know the Council is preparing their final assault."

Sage was silent for a long moment. Then she spoke, her voice low and ancient.

"Your parents faced the Council's final assault. They knew they couldn't win—not in a direct confrontation. So they chose a different path. They chose to sacrifice themselves to protect you."

James's golden fire flickered. "I know. But I'm not going to sacrifice myself. I'm going to fight. And I'm going to win."

Sage's eyes were filled with ancient sorrow. "You might not have a choice, James. The Council is coming with everything they have. Their leader, Archon Zephyros, hasn't left the Celestial Spire in a thousand years. But he will come. And he is more powerful than anything you've ever faced."

James met her gaze, his golden fire blazing. "Then I'll face him. And I'll show him that the Last Dragonheart is not afraid."

The Gathering Storm

The next morning, James gathered his allies in the Ashford command center.

Kael was there, his mismatched eyes still red-rimmed from the previous night's celebrations. Serena stood with her arms crossed, her ice-blue eyes sharp and focused. Rourke's massive form filled the corner, his gray face unreadable. Lysandra leaned against the wall, her dark eyes gleaming with anticipation. Sage stood at the head of the table, her scarred face grim.

James stepped forward, his golden fire blazing around him.

"The Celestial Council is coming. Archon Zephyros himself is leading their final assault. They'll bring an army unlike anything we've ever faced. And if we're not ready, everything we've built will be destroyed."

Kael raised his hand weakly. "Question! How do we prepare for an army of Celestials? We barely survived the Wardens!"

James's expression was grim. "We prepare by fighting smarter. By using every advantage we have. By standing together."

Serena nodded slowly. "The Frostwood Realm will stand with you. We've already proven our loyalty."

Rourke's massive form shifted. "The Earth Realm will stand with you. We've already lost too much to the Council."

Lysandra's dark eyes gleamed. "The Shadow Realm will stand with you. Even if I have to drag my uncle into the battle myself."

James looked at his allies—his family. The golden fire in his chest blazed with fierce determination.

"Then we prepare. We train. We plan. And when the Council comes, we show them that the Seven Realms will never bow to tyranny."

The Training

The next week was a blur of preparation.

James trained harder than ever before, pushing his golden fire to its limits. He sparred with Rourke, learning to absorb and deflect massive blows. He practiced with Serena, learning to combine fire and ice into devastating attacks. He trained with Lysandra, learning to move through the shadows like a ghost.

Kael trained too, his Soulweaver abilities growing stronger with each passing day. He learned to heal faster, to shield more effectively, to sense danger before it struck. His green healing energy pulsed with newfound power, and his mismatched eyes blazed with determination.

Sage oversaw their training, her scarred face unreadable. She pushed them harder than ever before, demanding perfection, demanding excellence.

"You will face the Celestial Council," Sage said, her voice like steel. "You will face Archon Zephyros himself. And if you are not ready, you will die."

James met her gaze, his golden fire blazing. "We're ready. We've been training for this our entire lives."

Sage's eyes softened, just slightly. "I know. But the Council doesn't fight fair. They will use every trick, every trap, every deception. They will try to break you, to divide you, to make you doubt everything you believe in."

James's jaw tightened. "Then we won't give them the chance."

The Council's Arrival

The Celestial Council arrived on the seventh day.

James stood on the walls of Ashford, watching the sky split open. Thousands of Celestials descended through the rift, their bodies blazing with ancient power. At their head stood Archon Zephyros himself—a towering figure of pure energy, his eyes like burning stars, his voice like thunder given form.

"James Dragonheart," Zephyros called, his voice echoing across the battlefield. "I have come to end this rebellion. Surrender now, and I will spare your allies."

James stepped forward, his golden fire blazing. "I will never surrender. Not to you. Not to anyone."

Zephyros laughed—cold, hollow, ancient. "You are a fool. A child playing at war. You cannot defeat me. You cannot defeat the Celestial Council."

James raised his hand, golden fire blazing like a second sun. "We'll see about that."

He charged.

The two armies clashed in an explosion of light and sound. Celestial soldiers descended from the sky, their weapons blazing with ancient power. James's allies met them head-on—Frostblood warriors, Stoneheart soldiers, Shadow assassins, Storm Realm fighters, and resistance fighters from Ashford.

The battle was chaos. Pure, unadulterated chaos.

James carved a path through the Celestial army, his golden fire blazing around him like a living inferno. Kael was at his side, green healing energy pulsing around them both. Serena created barriers of ice that protected their flanks. Rourke was a mountain of destruction, his massive fists crushing Celestial soldiers like insects. Lysandra moved through the shadows, her dagger finding throats and hearts with deadly precision.

But Zephyros was waiting.

He descended from the sky, his power shaking the very earth. James met him in the center of the battlefield, their powers colliding with devastating force.

"You cannot defeat me, Dragonheart!" Zephyros roared, his energy lashing toward James like a whip. "I have lived for millennia! I have crushed empires! I have destroyed bloodlines far stronger than yours!"

James dodged, golden fire blazing around his fists. "I don't care how long you've lived. I care about what's right. And you are wrong. You've always been wrong."

He drove his blazing fist into Zephyros's chest, and the Archon staggered back, his form flickering with surprise.

"You... you hurt me," Zephyros breathed, his eyes widening with shock. "No one has hurt me in a thousand years."

James smiled—a fierce, determined smile. "Then it's about time someone did."

He lunged again, his golden fire blazing brighter than ever before.
