Chapter 1799: We’d Be Friends

Chapter 1799: We’d Be Friends

“Eh…?”

It felt like the ground collapsed on him, and his heart dropped into that pit.

Haxel blinked, tracing the shadowy woman’s features with his eyes.

He tried remembering who she was, but his memory failed him.

For as long as he could remember, he had never made an enemy of her caliber. Never. This should be the first time the two of them met eye-to-eye, but the woman was staring at him with such intense hate that it made him second-guess himself.

“I don’t understand…” He rasped. Beads of sweat were trickling down his face. “I don’t know you.”

The urge to flee was strong, but his back was against the well.

No way for him to escape.

“You don’t know me, but I know what you did,” the woman said slowly. Her voice was shaking—like she was holding back rage. The sight of Haxel filled her with rage—but he didn’t know why. “Who do you think you are… Sir Haxel?”

Rumble…

The entire house began to shake.

Her hair flared around her like living shadows as her aura spilled out, swallowing her entire body in a void of darkness, and then staining the walls, floor, and ceiling in a tide of absolute darkness. It was less an emanation and more a consumption.

As if her presence were swallowing the very space around her.

But the most unnerving part was the absence of any familiar power coming from her.

No life energy. No Echo. Not even the manifestation of a Soul Artifact.

All of this power stemmed from nothing but herself.

In a fit of anger, the woman slammed Arran’s corpse against the wall, splattering him into a shadow.

Flesh, bones, and blood were turned into shadow in an instant.

A display of abnormal power.

Not wanting to fight this mysterious woman, Haxel charged his entire body with life energy and tried to go through the wall. His power splashed upon impact, but his eyes then widened. He couldn’t break the wall.

The entire house is swallowed by the woman’s power, effectively cutting him off from the outside world.

Haxel gritted his teeth and summoned his Soul Artifact.

A greatsword manifested in his hand as he glared at the woman, ready to fight to the death.

Since it came to this, he’s going to struggle until his last breath.

“I don’t know who you are,” He said, gripping the handle tighter. “I don’t even know what I did to you, but I don’t think I’m going to go down easily. In fact,” He licked the blade—eyes flickering with a grim, maddening light. “Whatever I did, I hoped I did it worse!”

“Worse…?” the woman smirked devilishly. “You’re in luck. You have the chance to do worse.”

“Hmm…?” Haxel’s brows furrowed in confusion.

Just then, a shiver ran down his spine when he sensed another aura outside.

It was far more domineering, and it’s also… familiar.

An aura that he can’t possibly forget.

“You see, I’m only a dog to sniff you out,” the woman continued. She then raised her index finger to point at the door behind Haxel. Her smile spread wider, seeing the fear in the de-honored knight’s face. “He’s the one who’ll bring death to you.”

Haxel’s heart skipped a beat.

He ran to the nearest window frantically to look outside.

And as the worst came to be, a broad-shouldered man could be seen approaching the house.

Rex walked through the dirt road with slow, deliberate steps.

His face was shadowed by the darkness around him, turning him into the God of Death. Each step shook the ground. Or at least, Haxel felt like the world was shaking as Rex approached closer and closer. No sign of hurrying.

Certain the prey wouldn’t be able to escape.

Haxel turned around. Like a cornered dog, he exited the room and charged straight at the kitchen wall, running past Linthia, who didn’t even bother stopping him. But the result remained the same. His charge was met with the shadowy energy, negating the impact and keeping the wall intact.

He then ran to the back door.

It’s locked.

Pushing past Linthia, he went to the second floor and saw more bodies there.

But he couldn’t care less. He stepped over them and tried breaking the window. The ceiling. The wall. Nothing worked.

Brak—!

Haxel recoiled from the sound of the front door slamming open.

He looked around, sweat already making his skin glisten as he searched for a way out, but he soon came to realize there was nothing he could do. Despair gripped him as he pressed his back against the corner, hoping to God that the wall would somehow swallow him.

Thud…

A heavy footstep resounded.

And then silence.

Time was said to slow down when someone was nearing death.

Haxel never believed it, but right now, the five seconds of silence felt like an eternity.

The tension and fear were so high that it felt like he was going to die from a heart attack.

Just then, his vision slipped.

He was swallowed by the ground, and for a second, it felt like he was falling. And in the next second, he felt the wind rushing against his body, and the house’s interior passing him in a blur before he crashed into the wall hard.

Unlike his attempt earlier, the wall cracked from the impact.

It happened so fast that he only realized that he was thrown when his ribcage rattled from the impact.

Through his blurry vision, he saw someone standing across the room, right beside Linthia.

His ears were ringing, and his eyes were blurry as blood trickled from his forehead and crossed his eye. He watched Linthia bow respectfully and say something to the monster in a man’s body, causing his red eyes to glow.

Rex’s gaze met with Haxel’s.

He tilted his head as his lips curled into a devilish smile before he approached.

Breathing heavily, Haxel reached for his greatsword, not too far from him.

Raising his hand was painful, but he needed his Soul Artifact.

Inches away from it, a foot stomped down.

Almost instantly, the Soul Artifact shattered along with the dirty white house floor.

“RAARGHKK!!”

A painful scream tore through his throat like raging fire. The pain from having his Soul Artifact shattered into pieces was excruciating. It wasn’t simply a pain that attacked the body, but it also attacked his soul, shooting electricity that tensed his entire body like a seizure.

Every Spirit knew that this was pain beyond imagining.

More painful than death.

Destroying a Soul Artifact, even those of lower grade, is already extremely hard.

For Rex to destroy his as easily as this is simply unthinkable.

Rex grabbed a handful of Haxel’s hair and hauled him from the floor and pinned him against the wall.

Bam—!

His fist landed squarely against Haxel’s face.

It broke the bones in the cheek and jaw, and even cracked the wall behind.

Rex’s eyes narrowed. He tilted his head and studied Haxel’s face, almost like he was gauging the brutal damage he inflicted. And the shake of his head that followed meant he wasn’t satisfied as another punch drilled into Haxel’s face.

Crack!

Just two mere punches, and Haxel’s face was already disfigured.

His nose was broken. The right side of his face was obliterated. And his jaw dangles loosely.

“You should have killed me when you had the chance.” Rex’s whisper was a cold breath against Haxel’s earlobe. His lips almost brushed the skin. “Did you think I was dead?” His big hand wrenched Haxel’s head upright, forcing him to listen. “After all you’ve seen me do… you’re a fool for believing that I’m dead. That you’re safe.”

Rex let go and stepped back.

He watched as Haxel’s weak body slid down to the ground, into a kneeling position.

“P-Please…” His voice was grating and slurred from his loose jaw. He raised his hand, the only one that could still work, at Rex. Begging. “Spare me.”

“Did anything change when I begged you to help me get away from the fissure? No. Nothing changed.” Rex grabbed his hand with one hand and used the other to grab his shoulder. He did it without much strength. But even then, the struggle from Haxel was still meaningless.

His hand tries to grab Rex’s face, to push him away, but it is meaningless.

“I promised to hunt you down, and I would.”

Linthia flinched at the sound of bone slowly breaking and skin tearing in a slow pull.

At the sound of a loud snap, Rex tore Haxel’s dominant arm from the body.

Splash—!

Blood sprayed the wall, coating it red.

Only a whimper escaped Haxel’s mouth as he had no more strength to scream.

“Funny enough, had you saved me, we’d be friends by now.” Rex stood up straight and grabbed a towel on the side to wipe his bloodied hands clean. He looked outside the window—at the serene night. “That woman you love betrayed me. I would’ve gladly helped you take her down, but you have to be petty.

“April didn’t do anything to you,” He shook his head and scoffed. “Such a shame.”

All he asked back then was for Haxel to take April.

He wouldn’t have that much of a problem with Haxel if that were the case.

Many people tried to kill him, and at this point, he was desensitized to the anger stemming from those who wanted to kill him. But he was never fine with someone trying to kill those around him. He didn’t even hide this fact.

He welcomed others to try to kill him.

Sadly, most were too prideful to listen and crossed the line as Haxel did.

Rex turned around and saw that Haxel was crying.

Considering that he was a berserker, this was a surprising sight.

Berserkers smiled and laughed at the gaze of death, not crying like a pitiful kid who got lost.

Perhaps it was his fault.

He did shatter Haxel’s Soul Artifact, so the Berserker of Skartold’s Echo is also shattered, and its grip on Haxel was slapped away, leaving the once fearless knight in this kind of state. “Don’t cry,” Rex said and squatted down before him again. “This is a good thing. I’ll send Morgana after you, so you can start from zero with her.”

“Good luck,” Rex stabbed his hand into Haxel’s chest and carved out his heart.

Almost instantly, Haxel’s body went limp.

<Super Berserk Quest has been completed!>

Rex breathed in relief.

Having the Super Berserk Quest on the back of his head made him uneasy all the time, like there was a knot in his chest that made it impossible for him to relax. Now that it was completed, he was free from that stress.

Though Linthia located Haxel, I realized I don’t need help.

Even from afar, Rex could smell the anger and hatred coming from Haxel.

It was a peculiar odor that his nose could pick up, and also a peculiar flicker of light in the distance that his eyes could see. Rex already asked the System about it earlier, and it said it was a side effect of becoming the Blank of the Anger Stratum.

Rex wanted to quickly learn about the Absolute Effect, but he had things to do.

Only he could do it, so he still hadn’t checked the manual.

Rex slipped the still-beating heart into his mouth, chewing on it as blood burst onto the roof of his mouth. He was pleasantly surprised by the taste of Haxel’s heart, but quickly noticed Linthia was now looking at him.

“What?” He asked, raising a brow. “Is there something on my face?”

“Pardon my curiosity, but is it that tasty?” Linthia asked, staring intently at the blood.

Rex has always kept to himself whenever he does something like this, at least back in the Mortal Realm, but it seemed that restraint was long gone now. He changed, and for once, she wanted to satisfy her curiosity.

“For my tongue, it’s the same as eating cooked meat. And the heart is the best part,” Rex shrugged as he headed for the door. “Looked disgusting, isn’t it?”

“No, Your Majesty. It’s not,” Linthia shook her head.

It looked disgusting whenever monsters did it, but not when it came to Rex.

At least that’s what she thought.

“Your Majesty,” She called, seeing that Rex was leaving. “I think you need to check the second floor.”

Rex pointed at the staircase, eyes staring at Linthia as if asking her that it was the second floor of this house, and then went upstairs. His eyes immediately locked onto a few bodies on the floor of people in quite high-quality armor.

Both of them were at the Master Immortal Spirit rank, which was damn strong for a small bubble like this.

“Who are they?”
