Chapter 1728: Secret Punishment

Chapter 1728: Secret Punishment

Rex decided to stay and accompany Princess Davina.

He meditated on the sofa, focusing solely on his internal wounds.

But the moment Princess Davina’s breath became steady, his eyes fluttered open.

Rex glanced toward the bed and found Princess Davina was sound asleep—staying up late is harder to do for Spirits compared to Humans because of the Black Rift, and Princess Davina didn’t only stay up late, but was also working.

It didn’t take long for her to fall asleep, about five minutes, and Rex wasn’t surprised.

Rex gave another fifteen minutes for her to enter deep sleep, and only then did he stand up.

He suppressed his aura and exited through the main door—making sure that he didn’t make any sound at all. Once he was in the corridor, he quickly made his way to the courtyard, and then approached one of the guards near the entrance.

“Lord Rex, what can I help you with?” the guard saluted and asked.

It was the same for the other guards nearby; all of them saluted when they saw Rex.

“I want to meet with my convoy, where are they?”

“Allow me to bring you to them. Do you prefer to ride on horse? I can take mine and come back.”

“Is it far?”

“No, it’s nearby. Five minutes of walking distance.”

“Then no need; I don’t mind walking.”

Hearing this, the guard nodded his head and politely gestured for Rex to follow him.

A few steps in, Rex halted and turned to the other guards.

“If Princess Davina woke up and asked where I am, tell her that I’m not going to be away for long.”

“Yes, Lord Rex!”

Knowing what befell Lord Lucen, who was Count Dara’s son, the guards were extremely polite, as if Rex didn’t show mercy to a noble, then he would certainly not show any mercy to normal people. It’s best not to get on his bad side.

Rex followed the guard and soon arrived at another residence.

Even from outside, Rex already noticed familiar faces as they were all soldiers who were guarding the carriage. Seeing him, the soldiers dropped what they were doing and stood at attention—but this scene didn’t faze Rex at all.

Other than his military background, he’s also an emperor, so this much bravado was not new for him.

He raised his hand and gestured for them to be at ease.

“Thanks,” Rex gave the guard who led him a nod. “Stay outside until I come back.”

Rex then scanned his eyes across the residence, which was basically a massive one-floor building that looked like it could hold a lot of people. Considering that these people are soldiers, the treatment Count Dara gave them was impeccable.

But then again, these soldiers belonged to the House of Castillon.

Seemingly not wanting to be seen by more soldiers, Rex headed straight to the backyard with big strides.

His senses were fixed on someone here.

Upon reaching the backyard, which was a well-maintained garden, Rex’s eyes locked onto a figure sleeping under what seemed to be a Sakura tree. Not a normal Spirit, but a Demon Spirit, and Rex quickly rushed towards this creature.

“Amanir,” He called and crossed his arms.

Since it might be bad to leave Amanir behind when Rex was being targeted, he also came along.

Amanir didn’t even open his eyes as he answered, “What’s wrong? Did you finally remember me?”

“I need your help.”

“Of course, you need my help. But why should I help you?”

Initially, Amanir was only playing around he was being neglected—after sneaking into Duke Lorcan’s bedroom to find information regarding the Sky People. But when he met with Rex’s gaze, he almost instantly knew that it was serious.

Rex’s gaze was stern, almost restrained for some reason.

“What’s wrong? What happened?”

“I’ve… done a blunder. And I can’t let it become a habit.”

“Hmm…?”

On the other side of the residence, the captain of the convoy was polishing his sword.

Most of his men were inside, indulging in the privileges that came with serving the House of Castillon.

A good bed, escorts, food, drinks—everything was provided inside.

But he had never been one for worldly pleasures.

Instead, as the one tasked with guarding the carriage that was carrying the most established princess of the house, his duty was to stay vigilant for any danger unseen—and be ready for their next departure at a moment’s notice.

Across from him, sitting on the grass in a circle, was a group of soldiers.

“Did you hear that Lord Rex was attacked by assassins?”

“Assassins…? How foolish can the perpetrator be? He dares to make a move against us?!”

“It was Lord Lucen, Count Dara’s second son. I heard Lord Rex killed him already.”

“Served him right.”

“Haha~! Lucen is a damn fool. Poor Count Dara for having a troublemaker for a son…”

“The House of Castillon is blessed to have a son-in-law like Lord Rex; he’s incredible… To deal with the assassins in his condition, it’s really impressive. As expected of Princess Davina, she can see things that none could see.”

Hearing this, the captain’s brows dipped into a frown.

’That being said, Lord Rex did tell us not to guard him. Did he know this would happen?’ He thought.

Before entering his temporary residence, until Princess Davina handled the work she had in this city, Rex instructed the soldiers to rest and focus on preparing for their next departure. Naturally, the captain opposed this idea.

No matter what, it’s more appropriate for them to be the ones guarding the residence.

It’ll be a lot better than leaving the security to Count Dara’s personal soldiers.

However, Rex insisted, and the captain has no say in this.

Now that the news of the assassination spread, the captain couldn’t help but wonder whether Rex knew that this was going to happen and was only doing this for their sakes. ’If he is, then I believe everything that happened during the Voidal Monarch mission. He’s really something else…’

Just then, his eyes shifted from the sword when he noticed a mild commotion.

A few soldiers came pouring out from inside.

And from their faces, the captain could tell that they were annoyed but had no choice.

Confused and curious, the captains approached the group.

“What’s going on? Why are you all stepping out?”

“Amanir, that lazy thing suddenly wanted to hog a room for himself. If only he’s not close—with Lord Rex, I’d beat him up for interrupting my fun time.”

“Amanir…?”

Hearing this, the captain looked into the building and contemplated.

Even though this was his first time meeting Amanir, who was the other person Rex brought with him, the captain knew that Amanir was mostly silent. Other than being extremely close with the servants in the duke’s residence, he preferred to sleep.

It wasn’t normal for Amanir to kick out these soldiers from a room.

’Unless… He was acting on behalf of someone. Lord Rex…’

Realizing that there was a chance Rex came to visit, the captain decided to check.

Inside, the soldiers were mostly focused on the east wing, which was where the captain was right now.

And in the main corridor, the servants were concentrated there, barring the path towards the west wing, which should be where Amanir was. Straightening up his posture, the captain headed to the west wing, attempting to walk past the servants.

But one of them stopped him.

“I apologize, captain, but we’ve been told not to allow anyone to enter the west wing.”

“Who told you this?”

“Lord Amanir; he was currently with Lord Rex to discuss important matters.”

’Important matters…?’

Hearing this, the captain frowned as discussing an important matter without the presence of Princess Davina is worrying. But then again, if Amanir and Rex were really plotting something bad, they would not be discussing it here with so many eyewitnesses.

Even so, the captain still wanted to check.

“Yes, I’m aware of what they were talking about, and they are awaiting my presence there. Step aside.”

“But captain, they hadn’t told us that you would be participating…”

“Are you telling me that I’m a liar?”

“How could I dare do that, captain? Of course not.”

“In that case, step aside…”

Noting the serious tone the captain was using, the servant looked at the other servants for help as she was placed in a hard spot. On one side, she was under strict rules that nobody was allowed to go to the west wing, but on the other, the captain was demanding to enter.

Either way, she would be offending someone.

Seeing that none of them dared to speak, she eventually stepped aside.

Amanir and Lord Rex are important people, but the captain is holding the sword right now.

Once the servants stepped aside, the captain followed along the corridor and reached the door at the end of the corridor. Even as he was approaching, he could already feel that the air around him was heavier, one that put him on edge.

So much so that he even rested his hand on his sword handle.

PAH!

At the sound, the captain’s body tensed up as the life energy in the air churned.

It sounded like a sharp hiss that split the air, followed by the crack of impact and then a groan.

Fortunately, the captain saw the door was cracked open a little, big enough for him to peek what was going on inside. He suppressed his aura to take a look inside, but before he could do that, the door was suddenly swung open.

Amanir came to view, levitating, staring at the captain with an unfriendly gaze.

“What are you doing here, captain?”

“I heard Lord Rex visited, so I came to check.”

“He’s busy right now. Come back half an hour later, and you can check on him then.”

Hearing this, the captain nodded his head and turned to leave.

But from the door, past Amanir, he caught sight of Rex kneeling on the ground with his back turned—his skin was marked by dozens of lacerations, seemingly from whips. Not gnarly, at least not anymore; the wounds were already knitting themselves shut with unnerving speed.

For a second there, the captain frowned in confusion.

From what he heard and then what he saw, it seemed like Amanir had been whipping Lord Rex.

Just then, Rex’s head snapped towards the captain—eyes glowing red.

Intense rage and ferocity could be felt from his gaze, and that made the captain turn away instantly.

Amanir watched from behind as the captain walked away, eyes staring at the carpeted floor.

’What did I see…?’ the captain thought in confusion and shock. ’I know nobles have unique tastes, but that didn’t seem like a kink. If it were—Lord Rex’s face wouldn’t be like that. Just what is he doing with Amanir?’

’Regardless, I need to report this to Princess Davina.’ He nodded and picked up his pace.

On the other hand, Amanir stared at the captain’s back with an evident frown.

It was good that Rex sensed him approaching, or else things would’ve taken a weird turn.

“I can tell that he’s going to report what he saw to Princess Davina,” Amanir said as he closed the door and turned towards Rex. “Besides, do you even need to go to this extent? You lived in a cramped space for years with her alone, so it’s natural for you to develop feelings.”

“Would Adhara, Evelyn, or even Gistella accept that reason?” Rex asked as he rose to his feet again. “I taught them to always control their emotions, but I didn’t. I risked everything trying to save her, and that’s a mistake.”

Rex slowly turned around to face Amanir; veins bulged and pulsated across his entire frame.

It looked painful as even Rex showed signs of pain on his face.

“And a mistake…” Rex’s eyes narrowed sharply, recalling that moment. “Needs punishment. I can’t let it become a habit. Even though I would do it again even if I could turn back time, I can’t take light of it, and that’s that.”

“I really never met someone who was as unforgiving to oneself as you…”
